  1. You need to realize that the staff did not recruit either of these backup QB's.  They owe them nothing.  That is the harsh reality of college athletics and the reason why so many transfer after a coaching change.  To have two full rides tied up in your 2nd and 3rd string QB's and neither is very good is bad for the team overall.  Very bad.  If those two are never going to play again, barring injury, why would they deserve a full ride scholarship from a new staff?

Again, I hope Bubba doesn't share your attitude. Last I checked, all scholarshipped athletes signed letters of intent with the University of North Dakota, not Chris Mussman or Bubba Schweigert. Personally, I'd be disappointed in my alma mater and its coaches if they didn't honor their commitments to the athletes the university recruits, as long as the athletes remain committed to it. And if success or failure for North Dakota football rides on honoring two scholarships, we've got much bigger issues.

  2. give Mollberg and Bartles the option to be a walk on next year.  Only keep one if any, if it doesn't cost us a scholarship.  I heard Heidelbaugh is sharp, gets things quickly, and his athletic ability is comparable to Studsrud.  heidelbaugh is clear #2.

Great idea. Wonderful way to reward a couple of guys, both with other options, who chose to come here during transition, stuck with the program through bad times and endured the criticism from arm-chair QBs on this board and elsewhere while trying to run an offense with no offensive line protection and no running game. Sure hope this isn't Bubba's mind set. Can't imagine what that would say to would-be recruits about the program's integrity and dedication to its student athletes.

  3. So it turns out that the gay beating at the fraternity started as a fight by the gay guy, who just fictionalized events.

How about Kelley issuing an apology email to students after he accused them of being non-welcoming and discriminatory.

How about the bison trolls apologizing here too.

I must have missed something. I read of Kelley describing this guy's complaint as "troubling" or "disturbing" but I missed the out-right accusations of discrimination. Could you post a link?

  4. Correct me if I am wrong but the only sport the BSC support that the SL doesn't that UND participates in is football. Big Sky doesn't have baseball and S/D but the SL does. And as Faison saying the BSC was a no brainer had to do with a home for football, SL didn't provide that and the deal with USD going to the MVFC wasn't known at that time.

Hockey, football and basketball are the major revenue-generating sports, and those followed by a large fan base. Football being "the only" sport not included in the Summit is a big exclusion. Entering SumValley would split major sports between 3 different leagues. Not a good thing. As to the offer from the the Big Sky, any uncertainty about football was not part of the explanation I heard at that time from Faison, who described the Big Sky as one of the "premiere" conferences in all of FCS.

  5. Scoring almost 10 more points per game than last year, and allowing 139 less rushing yards per game than last year is better. Some stats are still ugly like turnovers caused by defense and our passing defense, but some things are showing a couple beeps on the heart monitor. The big improvement....2-1 including an FBS win going into conference play.

Laid an egg v Misery State last year but played a much tougher FBS opponent. Overall, early offensive stats very similar to 2014 -- but trending in the wrong direction. Defense continues to improve, largely with "Muss recruits." Shows what a solid DC can do for a program.

  6. I would have no problem playing football in the MVFC, it's playing other sports in The Summit that is the problem.

I wonder if the burden of funding FCOA could be pushing this back into consideration. Ugh. Travel costs aside, much prefer the Big Sky for all sports, and dissapointed more of our fanbase doesn't fully embrace it.

  7. Sometimes I think we don't need to SU trolls. Geez an offense with a first-year quarterback and tons of freshman playing goes up against a 4-time national champion and some of the "fans" are dissing their own team and coaching staff. We aren't there yet, we are moving in the right direction. Here is what I took away from the game on/off the field.

Off the field: I thank UND and Bubba for stepping up and getting the game scheduled. To me it makes SU look petty and selfish that they were the reason this game wasn't being played. (please trolls don't feel the need to throw out your tired excuses).

On the field: we needed this measuring stick to put fire in the belly of the players. I'm hoping it pulls them together more as a team. I also like that they were able to play in this environment. The injury sucks and it's cheap plays/players like that that pour gas on rivalries.

The #1 sport at SU is football, the #1 sport at UND is hockey but that doesn't mean that we can't build football into something special both on the field and in the stands but it takes a commitment from the athletic department to provide the resources for the team and the motivation for the fans.

This long ago became a moot issue, but as you repeatedly post praising the scheduling of this game, I've gotta ask again: What did it accomplish exactly?

Interested in making the playoffs? By scheduling this game, UND effectively locked itself into a 5-game home schedule for 2014-15 and put the team on the road in a hostile environment against a very tough opponent. Not exactly the recipe to help a marginal, rebuilding team claw its way back into post-season play.

Want to "get the rivalry going again?" You might feel this game pressures the AC by making it look "petty and selfish," but  more likely the administration there saw an easy way to fill its home schedule on the cheap and at the same time satisfy the pressure from some quarters to see UND and NDSU on the same field again. Never have I heard any enthusiasm expressed by the AC braintrust to renew the rivalry in football, and Faison was quoted in print last week as saying there's been no discussion at all about further games. This contract -- 2 games spread out over 5-6 years -- effectively defers any renewal of a regularly scheduled rivalry for at least another decade.

Does the team need "a measuring stick to put the fire in the belly of the players?" Based on the play I saw Saturday and in the second half v Drake, I'm afraid this team may get plenty of motivation from the likes of Portland State, Montana State and Montana as the season progresses.

Unfortunately, it appears a large segment of this fanbase -- and maybe its head coach -- remain unable to define this football program in any way other than a comparison to the school 75 miles down the road, and UND football suffers because of it.

  8. Improvement is more than possible.

If it wasn't, then why not just throw every true freshman into the games, and if they perform poorly, assume there's no hope. If that low completion percentage improves and is well over 50%, and he's throwing more touchdowns than interceptions, I think Studsrud will have a good sophomore campaign. Let's keep everything realistic. No reason Studsrud can't complete 50% of his throws and have more TDs than INTs...

No offense, but your statement is pretty obvious. The question is will he do it. Most everyone posting here  is hoping for the best, and I'll be as pleased as anybody if he gets under center next week, makes sound decisions and directs a solid passing game. But game time ain't practice, and the 58 efficiency rating and the 2 TD passes vs 6 interceptions jut leave me a little uneasy. I think both Molberg's and Bartel's game stats eclipsed Studrud's last year, and if no one clearly separated from the pack in fall camp, I'm a little puzzled by this decision.

  9. With the QB battle it is mental more than anything.  Studsrud is the smarter, more cerebral QB and makes better, quicker decisions.

Hope that's what we see when it counts -- on the field on the 5th.

  10. Don't overlook the injury; Achilles tendon injuries are tough. I think Mollberg showed some good things last season, but he also showed some poor things (overthrows, bad decisions/interceptions, etc.). I think Studsrud's athleticism is what Bubba and Rudolph are looking for.

Haven't seen a minute of fall camp and the young man undoubtedly has improved since he was thrown into the fire last year as a true freshman, but a starting QB who has connected on about a third of his pass attempts in game situations and finished last year with an efficiency rating of 58 leaves me feeling a little anxious.

  11. WDAY radio wasn't much better.   I caught 5 minutes of Kolpacks radio show yesterday morning and practically threw up in my mouth.   They had Carson Wentz's dad on and they are going on about how UND offered Carson the keys to the kingdom and probably would have been a 4 year starter, but he chose to go to NDSU knowing he'd be stuck behind Jensen for years, but look at him now.   Gloat a little more about getting a great QB.

I still wonder too why we let WDAY broadcast our regular season games.   We seem to be outcasts to them any other time.

Pimping the AC has been a cottage industry for the Kolpack family for 40+ years now. As everyone knows, NDSU's in-state recruits are automatically the best players in the state by virtue of signing with the AC. Players who leave da Bizon do so solely because they were bypassed by other recruits for playing time. Jeff's a nice guy but simply cannot pass on any opportunity to take a shot at UND. I heard part of his Saturday show a few weeks ago. Hockey came up, and 50% of the conversation was Kolpack chirping about being stiffed by Hackstol on a request for an interview. He simply can't help himself. I think it's genetic.

As to radio coverage, it's hard to get along without the local, regional and statewide coverage that can be provided by either KFGO or WDAY.

  12. Undoubtedly costly, but it would gate more than baseball, M/W S&D, and W IH combined

Are you sure about this? Personally, I don't sense any great untapped fan interest in lacrosse, unless you assume UND fans just can't get enough of sports with a goalie and sticks. Personally, I'd hate to see baseball go, and I think those who say it can never be competitive need to take a look at results so far this season.

There's an old cliche in campaign politics: "If you want to gather roses, look where roses grow." I think the StarTrib article posted by 92,96 says all you need to know about where to look for athletic department savings. How many other women's programs could be strengthened by redirecting womens' hockey scholarships to other areas? And how much money would UND actually save by axing swimming and diving, or baseball? (IIRC, doesn't much of baseball's funding come through donations of former players?)
