Weber and NDSU have mammoth, gargantuan offensive lines. They shoved our 3 DL wherever they wanted them and still had two guys to attack the second level (our LBs).

If you run a 3-4 you must have a NG that can consume the center and a guard (see: Tank Harris).

You can argue strength, mobility, technique, etc., but NDSU's "mammoth, gargantuan offensive lines" are essentially the same size as UND's. True, also, for Tank Harris, who was listed at 6'3" and 287, compared to Craig Orlando at 6'3" 290,  Jalen Morrison at 6'2" and 290, Elijah Beach at 6'3" and 290.

We did lose a lot but not enough to give up 30+ a game. No excuse for that.

So what's the explanation then? Why did points allowed jump by roughly 50% in one year if not due to personnel changes?

Seems pretty clear the problem has been failure to recruit and/or development replacements for some very strong talent that left after 2021, including Canady, Turner, Larson and others -- all of whom were recruited by this same staff that's too old, too D-II, too satisfied with mediocrity.

Just to add some perspective on our defense. We have had at best a good defense 4 times since 2012. In years '16 '19 '20 and '21 we averaged at or under 22.0 ppg. The best being last year at 20.27ppg. That's modest success defensively but it's enough to win games if your offense is worth its salt. Since 2012 we have averaged 26.7 ppg. In that same time frame the average ppg for national champion defenses has been 14.1 ppg. JMU is the outlier in that group allowing over 20 ppg at 21.2, however, they scored 46.67 ppg to offset their decent at best defense in 2016. Basically, if we want to make deep playoff runs we need to score on average over 30ppg and give up under 20ppg. We've had plenty of offenses hit that mark and all of 0 defenses. 0, zip, zilch, nada. All but two of those seasons we've had a head coach who is a former defensive coordinator. It's not good enough. Never was, never will be. It's always about the defense in the playoffs and our playoff record in D1 is appropriately atrocious when you look at the stats. We need to get better on d and stay that way.

Maybe stats need to be interpreted in the context of your opponents. I can't comment on the strength of other conferences, but I think most would agree the Big Sky and the Valley are among the strongest. You noted UND did relatively well defensively 2019-21. (I can't find the stats from spring 2021 season.) In 2021, UND ranked 4th in scoring defense in the Valley at 20.3 ppg (7th vs run but 3rd vs pass), but we were 8th in scoring offense. This year, we were 4th in scoring offense at 30.9 ppg but 9th in scoring defense, giving up 30.8 ppg. Same coaches, same schemes.

Certainly room for improvement, and recruiting definitely open to criticism, but  it's difficult to fault defensive scheme or coaching decisions with such big swings in performance year-to-year. Looks more like a personnel issue: What/who changed for UND from 2021 to 2022?

For those who question the effectiveness of 3-4, interesting that Montana topped the Big Sky defensively this year at 19 ppg and was 2nd in 2021 at 16.3 ppg running a very similar defense. (3-3-5, actually).

FOR ALL (and @jimdahl) TO READ AND UNDERSTAND:

There is a consistent rumor about a player being brought here. To date it is a rumor, an allegation. There has been no public documentation to date.

If it's an unfounded allegation you're harming a person; if there is substance, you may be harming an investigation.

Perpetuating this rumor puts this site at risk and is a violation of forum guidelines. Continuing to do so, without public documentation, will be met with suspensions. Not a threat, just fair warning.

    That is all.

    Carry on.

Finally. Moderators all have weekends off??

When teams win the QB generally gets too much of the credit and when they lose they are supposed to get too much of the blame.

Like I have said before, we are close, so very close. AT JMU we score a td after the muffed punt or score a TD on our first drive of second half we are likely on our way to Huntsville for the semis.   I see the game differently than some of you.  In today's football, all other things being relatively equal, teams go as far as their QB's will take them.  Do we have deficiencies on D?  Of course we do.  Special teams, yes.  But so does every other team.

Enjoy your continued input/insight, even if I don't always agree. MUCH appreciate a debate about qb skills, however prolonged,  rather than the predictable political detour that ends so many SS threads.

Just curiuos what issues you think the players are having with him. Or more presicely, how is he the problem?

Hey, no great basketball mind here, and, like nearly all SS posters, I have absolutely no insight into coach's relationship with his players. But I think when you have roughly a quarter of your team -- and we're barely into the off-season -- jumping ship, you have to be concerned about the atmosphere and culture of the program. Now maybe UND has recruited an inordinate number of selfish "cancers" to its program, as some here seem so eager to suggest. Maybe it's the lousy weather or meager entertainment options of Grand Forks, or maybe this is just the "new normal" in mid-major basketball today.  I think you at least have to look at your successful peer institutions in answering those questions.

Down at NDAC -- granted, probably 4 degrees warmer on a January day -- I think they've had two players depart in the last couple of years, and clearly they have talent that might find a place at a larger program. I may be wrong, but I don't recall hearing of any players in the transfer portal at USD or SDSU. Maybe the rich culture and exciting night life of Vermillion and Brookings keeps them around?

Again, I don't know the answers, but it appears there's enough evidence  here to at least be asking some serious questions.

haha..."show me your papers comrade or you can't enjoy UND football"...think attendance is lacking at the alerus already? do this and you'll be able to hear our qb calling the plays in the huddle in the luxury boxes.

    Politics uber alles, I guess.

Leatherdale committed to Iowa Western yesterday.

I assume Leatherdale was projected at NG. Not a 20-21 prospect, but I presume/hope UND is looking closely at Lucas Schweigert from Bismarck Century as a 21-22 prospect. He was impressive in the state championship, both holding down the center of the D line and showing the quickness to get involved in a lot of tackles on the outside. For 20-21, I would think RB/LB Cade Garcia would be at least an excellent PWO candidate.

I actually see a 5'11" turd that likes to celebrate plays he should be making.  Put me down as a hard pass.

Per Twitter, it appears Mr. Buetow has signed on with the AC.

It ain’t what is Bubba made of, its what are these players made of. TV guys showed us no respect. At some point these guys need to play a consistent 60 min game with no mental errors to the best of their ability.

Just for context for anyone who doesn't recall, UND 6-0 at home this year; just 1-4 when playing on the road
