  1. You play the hand you're dealt.

Mussman didn't have a full deck ... for Bubba.

To be fair, much of the early success on defense this year was with players recruited by Mussman (with the benefit of improved coaching under the new staff), and much of the offensive potential from last year (i.e., receivers) left after Mussman was fired. Bubba had very little recruitment time after he came on board, but I think its also fair to say that, aside from a couple of FBS drop-downs, the transfer class Schweigert brought in to provide immediate help has been a bust.

  2. We'll then, what was his reasoning for getting blown out?

The game sounded a lot like the non-competitive, tail-between-your-legs, go-lie-in-the-corner beat-downs that ultimately cost Mussman his job. Maybe at least as much about effort, focus and discipline as it was about youth and injuries -- and I think that perception was reflected in some of the post-game comments I heard from players and Bubba himself, who said immediately after the game they'd find out this week who the real tough players were on this team.

  3. From my vantage point it looked like he would have made it if he kept on at his original angle and hadn't cut back inside, but that is certainly not definitive.  Not suggesting he dance like a scatback or that the loss was his fault, just pointing out the series of events that led to our disappointing defeat.

    Fair 'nuff.

  4. How happy would you be if you found out the week before Game 1 that your kicker/punter, who took all the #1 reps for three weeks of fall camp, was ineligible due to his own doing?  I wouldn't play him either.

Then that's your choice as the coach. Should that decision be immune to scrutiny or criticism on this board?

  5. It's not only the kicking crew's deal - it a perfect storm of screw-ups to lose this one.  Molberg runs for the sticks instead of dancing and cutting up results in probably a first down

Disagree with you on this one. The Montana linebacker made a solid play staying home to shut off the bootleg. He had the angle on Molberg and simply made a textbook tackle. Molberg's a solid runner -- I liked the shoulder he put into a safety later in the game -- but he's not going to dance like a scatback out there.

  6. No son, it's about cutting freshman kids on the team some slack for being nervous in a pressure situation they haven't dealt with before.  These aren't paid professionals in the NFL; they are literally months removed from high school.  Nice try though.

Some of you cheerleaders need to decide which side of the argument you're on; either you're all about record and accountability -- and you've speculated endlessly about the ultimate win-loss record for this team while throwing any number of former players under the bus as "quitters" for not riding out a coaching transition -- or you're about setting a tone, building a culture and appreciating the "moral victories" along the way, record be damned. If it's the former, as many months' of postings would suggest, then maybe a coach who leaves a veteran player on the sideline and puts a crucial field goal attempt on the shoulders of a true freshman should be open to a little scrutiny, too.

Or does the decision for you simply depend on which coach we're criticizing?

  7. Good lord people.

The freshman holder and freshman kicker screwed up under pressure. So what? Yes it would've been huge if they made it, but UND isn't competing for titles this season anyway. Let's hope they learn and can start hitting big kicks for the next 3 and a half years starting Saturday.

    All about "moral victories" now?

  8. That's fine.  My point is neither should be on the field and that is a verified fact.  So, when these crucial situations pop-up don't surprised that something may go wrong.  Also, the snap was OK but the hold was worse.  The timing was completely off - Taubenheim stood no chance.

BTW, Meindel has been eligible to play for two weeks now and Bubba hasn't even let him dress.  If Bubba wanted to sell out and put everything on the field he could to win, Meindel would be playing.  Bubba is sending a message to his team for the future and the thing that sucks is they lose to Montana because the kid F'ed them over and put Bubba in that situation.

What's the sellout? If Meindel has served the penalty for his infraction -- whatever it was -- but the coach chooses to keep the experienced kicker on the shelf and relies on the true freshman to kick the crucial field goal, then maybe this one's on Schweigert.

  9. I come here for a little sports info, really, but was intrigued by the traffic on this thread. It's amazing to see how a well-intentioned discussion concerned with the well-being of a missing local college kid can degenerate so quickly into rank speculation and agenda building.

Wild statements that "Bresciani knows what the real issue is but he doesn't want it in the Minneapolis press" and that, for the NDSU president, "keeping good press trumps finding a killer" take irrationality to new heights, even for a sports fan board. How in the world would Bresciani hamper a death investigation involving the FBI, Moorhead Police Department and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Investigation? His public admonitions against speculation seemed oddly presumptuous and patronizing but reflect his growing arrogance (see current relationship with SBoHE) or the good-old-boy/Chamber of Commerce relationship NDSU has with the Fargo media and mayor, not a nefarious plan to suppress a murder investigation.

I've never seen anything official to even suggest Andrew Sadek's death was a homicide in Wahpeton. Possible? Of course, but much more likely a sad case of suicide by a young man embarrassed and worried about the implications of his first-ever major brush with the law. I believe that's the direction law enforcement has gone with this case.

I have no idea what happened to young Mr. Bearson. The fact the case appears to remain unsolved suggests the curious tweets the night of his disappearance were a dead end. It will be interesting to see if toxicology results are released with autopsy results. Not to impugn the young man, but when my friends or I left a house party at  4 AM when we were 18 years old, there was a good chance a substantial quantity of alcohol was involved. That opens the door to a lot of poor decision making, potentially leading to a variety of bad outcomes.

In any event, it's oddly comforting to see a predictable moronic retort from Bison Dan, who spends his days stalking on Sioux Sports for something new -- anything new -- to feed his unending resentment of all things UND/Grand Forks. Carry on.

  10. Is Stony Brook in the Big Sky now? If you read my post, comments referred to league play and were not a critique of the SB game play. With the current o line play and inexperience in the receiving corps, we didn't have much success throwing the ball at Mizzory State. Good thing the ground game was there to dig us out of a hole.

  11. With respect to "pound the rock" devotees, some balance on offense is what you need in BSC play. Three yards and a cloud of dust is a tough way to play catch up, and teams like MSU look capable of putting 14 points on the board before the end of pregame warm ups.

  12. Molberg, it doesn't matter what you draw up if the quarterback only completes 2 passes the entire game. There is constantly 8 or 9 guys in the box which for a bad offensive line makes life awful. We don't need to be a great passing team, but you do need to complete enough to keep the defense honest. Until we can consistently complete a pass our running game will always be trash.

Seven. S-E-V-E-N pass plays called the entire game. Hard to be the problem when you're just handing off the ball.

  13. I would at least like to see a bubble screen thrown in here and there in an attempt to keep the defense somewhat on their toes.

Goska would be a welcomed upgrade in my opinion.

I think the play calling is proof that the staff has zero confidence in the offenses ability to throw the ball........

Well, nostalgia's always comforting, I guess. Don't get me wrong, quality young man who  represented the program and university well through a difficult transition and, if IIRC, also was the unlikely hero of last-second win vs USD that won the Great West championship in 2012 (and doomed the program, according to some here, by extending Mussman's tenure). But my recollection of most of Goska's time under center was of 7-yard passes drilled at the feet of receivers running  10-yard out patterns and defenses playing nine in the box against us.

In the first offensive series last night, Mollberg sailed a pass just over the head of a receiver running a sideline route. It was a three-step drop and a quick throw to what appeared to be the first (or only?) read for the play, but already a defensive lineman was draped all over him, affecting the throw. Maybe that's why neither the coaching staff nor Mollberg seemed to have confidence in the passing game.

I agree with the bubble screen. I'd like to see Mollberg roll out more with pass-or-run options, but can we even contain the defensive end and/or OLB consistently enough to allow that to happen? I don't think Mollberg's the problem -- and I don't think Goska would have been the answer. We just seem to be stuck with puzzlingly ineffective OL play that limits almost all offensive options.

  14. Wait. What happened to all the enthusiasm  to "pound the rock?" You know, grind out yards on the ground, eat up the clock and keep the opposing offense off the field. Four games into a rebuilding year and everyone's ready to jump ship?

When your leading ball carrier averages less than 2 yards per carry, there's obviously a problem. And that's not a knock on Norberg. How many running plays were blown up in the backfield? How many pass attempts came on third and eight? The reality is if you can't get effective offensive line play there isn't much that's going to work well or consistently. ONE new Juco offensive linemen was brought in during off season (not counting true freshman) and somehow people are surprised the running game looks a lot like last year's, except with more attempts.

Aside from the one pretty TD pass, Mollberg wasn't stellar tonight  --  overthrew a potential touch down in the first half and shorted a possible catch in the second -- but two other passes went off or through receivers' hands and, really, how much impact can you have  when you attempt just seven passes in an entire game. Those are Goska-esqe passing numbers.

What changes in offensive philosophy do people on this board think would be effective with the current players on the roster? Ramp up the passing attempts? (Mussman was tarred and feathered on this board for promoting that kind of "soft" offense.) More trickeration? And somebody please tell me how long Bartels, a drop-back passer, would last with the current protection.

  15. Amen, Ira. Perfectly said. Lots of factors involved in how we got to where we are. In the end its all academic. The whole fanbase looks a little petty with the apparent need by some to continually bash a coach who's no longer with the program. Time to move on.

  16. Posing the question on a blog will get you a variety of answers. There are quite a few folks who have trouble getting beyond the fact the Mussman didn't leave a boatload of talent and depth. Thus throughout the game thread and comments they will continue to feel better bashing Mussman. It's pretty clear what he did and don't do. Then there are the trolls who want to remind everyone that the AC is pretty damn good. We also have a large group of our fans who have to keep comparing us to what the AC did and didn't do and how they might have a reasonable chance of beating us this year or even next.

Fortunately, Bubba and the new staff are concerned about the guys who are here and how to get better "day by day". Bubba wants to run the ball, but if we can give the QB time, I think they will try and open things up. It's pretty tough to be one dimensional and without an experienced and talented Oline, I think you will see this team will take whatever they think they can exploit.

Our defense is better but must improve everyday. One of my pet peaves is dropping the ball. If you watch our skill kids in practice and warm ups not many look the ball into their hands every single time they catch it. If you are in the habit of doing that every time, you have the habit of securing the FB before you turn up field or make a move. One of most important fundamentals in catching the ball yet so many don't do it. If we don't drop the interceptions we are more competitive. Oline will improve but that group may take longer cuz of the skills and schemes necessary to be successful. Kids at skill positions can let their athletic ability carry them sooner than kids in the oline. These guys have a good attitude that they need to develop into a winning attitude and I believe they will improve as the year goes on. San Jose State is a decent team and they handed it to us. It's over, we get better and "on to Belle Fourche Mr. Natlinger".

    Well said.

  17. Really? "Business deals"? If this is strictly a money issue UND comes out pretty good considering it's an hour bus trip south.

For all you "Fire Faison" and "UND got bent over" crowd...explain to me what cards is/was UND holding? What leverage did/do they have in this whole process? "Respect"? "Weber State"?

Another question...when that Saturday next September rolls around who has the most to gain when the clock reads 0:00?

I live in Fargo. UND's FB program is seen as a complete joke by SU supports but now there is nothing but talk about "what happens if we lose" next September by those same people.

Personally I am tired of the "ugly redheaded step child" treatment UND's FB program has got and is getting in this state. Good for Bubba for taking a risk to change that. You, Matt and Irish can all keep staring at your full size posters of Muss tacked to your bedroom ceiling. ;)

    Carry on............

  18. Wow. Talk about conjecture. To assume that the second game in this low-ball contract constitutes the first game of a renewed series stretches rational thought. It doesn't matter if someone talked with their neighbor who knows a coach at the AC who said it will be OK, what you've got is what's on paper; a bargain basement deal for two games on the road stretched out over FIVE years.

Anxious to resume the rivalry and want to appear above the petty bickering? Why not agree, as Faison suggested in an email, to go to FU for free next year and wait to negotiate further games with their new AD, who some here seem certain will be open to a home and home.

What's done is done, I guess, and UND will move forward. Here's hoping Thursday's game is the start of a bright future for Sioux football. But the apparent desperation to schedule something -- anything -- with the AC suggests a lack of vision/lapse in judgment by Faison and, yes, Bub a Schweigert. Anxious for relevance? Put a capable team on the field and make some noise in the BigSky, the preeminent FCS conference in the west and the home we' ve chosen. A reasonable deal with the AC can wait for their new, more reasonable AD. Instead we feed the perception of inequality by grasping at a one-sided offer intended as an insult and persist in defining our success on an opponent we no longer play in a conference we don't' t belong to.
