A miss is a miss with field goals, the longer they are the more risk of a block because of trajectory.

I am referring to height and distance in regards to Kick-offs and Kick-off coverage.  The more height and distance the more time the coverage team has to get down the field, get off blocks, make a tackle, preventing the other team from obtaining good field position and/or momentum.

No blocked kicks the past two years, per Geaux Sioux"s stats. So what's your explanation for the big drop off in FG % from 40 to 49 yds this past year (4 of 10) vs the two previous years? ( 8 of 10)

I wasn't aware of the 2nd team honors, just an opinion.  4 of 11 from 40+ yards and kick offs need more height and distance.  64% make percentage.  I expect better.

In regards to field goals, I don't recall that height or distance was the issue on most misses this year; longitutde was. Always wondered how much the cast on his arm most of the season affected his kicking, particularly his accuracy. Big drop-off this year in success from 40+.

I think this is him.  Looks like a solid #2 next year IMO.

Why not #1? Can't imagine this guy, with the clock ticking on 3 years of eligibility, is coming in with any other expectation than competing to be the #1 guy. This coaching staff's mantra since they were hired has been that no one's guaranteed a starting position. After this season ended, Bubba, IIRC, identified QB play as one of three areas that needed improvement. Don't know Studsrud personally, but he strikes me as a high character guy who's respected by his team mates. His biggest attribute on the field, aside from leadership, is that he doesn't seem to make a lot of costly mistakes. But I suspect his mobility will be limited in the future due to injuries, and in terms of overall play I think UND was just average this year at the QB position.

It is a final from the UNIdome, 45-24 the Jacks over the Panthers.  Does a convincing win like thar for SDSU over one of the darlings of the FCS give them a seed?

Not sure I want to know the answer. ...

You think New Hampshire and Western Illinois should've been in over UND? Don't get me started on that different topic, Ira.

I too like the schools in the Big Sky Conference, but I also like the regional schools that are far more relatable to UND and this region.

If anyone thinks average attendance (which is $$ bottomline) won't be up with consistent contests against local schools (NDSU, SDSU, USD), they are largely mistaken. This needs to happen largely for that as well as the travel costs (perhaps minor but still a tangible factor). Lastly, travel to away contests and neutral site tournaments (Sioux Falls Summit League Tournament) for UND fans will improve substantially in terms of numbers. Perhaps you won't get "scenic, unique vacations" that the BSC apparently allows for some, but that isn't doable for the masses.

I am happy to hear so many have bought into the Big Sky Conference and support it. That said, don't let inherent hate for NDSU cloud your judgement as far as which conference(s) just make more sense.

Which "masses" typically attend UND road games outside of Fargo? Nerly 400 miles from Grand Forks to Vermillion. Not exactly a trip down to Valley Dairy. I think UND historically averaged a couple hundred fans for games at the South Dakota schools back in the day. Kudos to those who attend, but a minor point in choosing conference affiliation. And I think annually playing your conference BB tourney in the "neutral site" of Sioux Falls is akin to playing the AC at the "neutral site" of Scheels hockey arena in Fargo.

Bottom line, the choice seems to be between a stable conference considered a "destination conference" by most of its members or a conference that many of its members -- most notably those "local schools" in the Dakotas -- continue to aspire to leave.

Mussman and his staff made those statement when UND first joined the Big Sky Conference. Those players that he recruited from those "non-traditional" regions were largely unsuccessful here at UND. Bubba and his staff recruit a MVFC blueprint, which is essentially the traditional regions of North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and even Manitoba. Bubba and his staff support a MVFC move for this reason, among several others.

I've never heard Bubba or anyone on his staff publicly express a conference preference, one way or the other.. Do you have a link to a published article or podcast on this? Details from a personal conversation with Bubba or one of his assistants? I recall hearing Bubba, in a post-signing day interview last winter or the year before, saying he was surprised at the positive reaction potential recruits had to the prospect of traveling to/playing at Big Sky schools.

Summit League = Landing pad for all schools rejected by the Big Sky.

And unfortunately it appears UND may be willing to throw away the enormous opportunity that the Big Sky presents, mostly because it and many of its supporters miss NDSU.

Where would the hockey program be today if it were equally consumed by a perceived need to be in lockstep with Minnesota?  Probably not at the top......

Fully agree with your post. Lots of discussion here about the enormous savings to be had by jumping conferences, but does anyone really have any hard numbers on what UND might gain -- perhaps travel-budget numbers compared to those from the  AC -- to justify sliding down to the bus league?

Without a home for football the Summit visit was meaningless and nothing was coming from the MVFC.   We got a Big Sky invite on the eve of the Summit visit and couldn't afford to turn it down.   They had 4-5 years to extend an invite if they were serious.

There was nothing stopping UND admin from completing the Summit site visit and informally exploring the possibility of MVFC invite -- just as USD did -- before answering the Big Sky offer. But they didn't because they saw the Big Sky offer as clearly superior, as Faison publicly stated. A formal, up-front offer from the MVFC may or may not have changed that.

we asked for 4-5 years and were told to pound sand.  I am sure there are still discussions but we are in the Big Sky because the Summit/MVFC said no to UND over and over and over again.

I think your recollection of the history here is a bit muddled. No one offered while UND was slogging through the initial years of transition -- just as was the case for the AC and SDSU earlier. It was UND that cancelled the Summit site visit, a precursor to a certain conference invite, on the eve of the visit when the Big Sky came calling with a membership offer. Faison called that decision a "no-brainer." A formal football invite from the Gateway conference (MVFC) may have changed the equation, but it certainly was not a given.

Personally, I much prefer the BSC over the NCC 2.0. Travel costs, unfortunately, could alter the assessment by UND admin.

I bet those emails disappear.  "HILLARY", where are you??

    So ....

Great thread here about the knuckle heads at the AC big-timin' their local media sycophants -- who buy ink by the barrel -- and you want to derail it into what promises to be another tired political pissing match?

It's an unprofitable sport in an area of the country where it is greatly affected by weather. The long term viability of the sport just doesn't make sense up here. I want us to cut the fat and let the athletic department properly compensate staff so we can be more competitive in hiring quality talent in the major sports.

Budget deficits. Conference requirements. Title IX. I understand. But if profitability is the criterion for elimination, we're probably down to men's hockey. And with more than a century as a UND collegiate sports, it's hard to argue baseball hasn't already demonstrated  "long term viability."
