Good grief. From July 13th to THIS, Detroit? 2nd place behind the Royals? WTF?

Yes, that's correct (see my post above). However, both the NCAA and schools like Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin quickly REVISED their previous policies on Native American nicknames shortly after the fiasco involving Florida State and the uproar that caused. Obviously these Big 10 schools needed to act quickly in order to prevent a policy violation should a Florida State football match-up become a possibility in a football bowl game. Plus there's that ACC/Big 10 Challenge basketball thing again...

Minnesota's policy: http://www1.umn.edu/usenate/usenate/docs/120503aca_policies.pdf In short, Native American mascot names are hostile and abusive...unless the NCAA says they're actually not. Wisconsin's policy: http://www.secfac.wisc.edu/senate/2007/1001/1023a.pdf

Sicatoka, don't forget about the Aztecs of San Diego State! http://legacy.utsandiego.com/uniontrib/20050806/news_1s6mascots.html Oh, and the Utah Utes!

Parise's getting traded to the Red Wings?

I think the whole point being made here is that the University needs to speak up loud and clear on major issues like professional sports nicknames. If the NFL team in Washington changed its name by 4pm today, U of small m faculty, its students, and Representative McCollum herself could move onto less trivial issues tomorrow - like the ISIS atrocities going on in Iraq/Syria.
-
Big 10 Scheduling Department: "Minnesota, you're hosting Florida State in this year's Big 10/ACC Challenge." Minnesota: "Ummmm we're opposed to racist nicknames." Big 10 Scheduling Department: "No problem, we'll send Duke to Minneapolis instead." Problem solved.

Already been done back in 2008, Blackheart. I had to erase the greasy palm print you left on the cup while wearing that ridiculous Bruins jersey in 2004 when you had your picture taken with it.

I couldn't be prouder of "my" school for taking this stand. Of course, if that stand means we might not make a basketball tournament, I reserve the right to change my stance. Well said.

The University of North Dakota ISIS Horde kind of rolls off the tongue.
-
Oh, well, at least NDSU still has this: The "Hook 'em Bison" horns...
-
...oh, wait, it's all coming back to me now...

I like that (UND on 3) a lot better than this...I'm not sure where I've heard it before, but it's pretty catchy...

You can't really take credit for a "close game" against a Fresno State team that eventually wound up with a 4-9 record, can you? That was the same 2011-2012 season that included a "revenge match" game against NAIA Sioux Falls. North Dakota bounced back from what should be considered the most embarrassing loss in school history two seasons earlier with a 15-13 "thumping" of the Cougars. I think staying close with a San Diego State team in 2012 that wound up at 9-4 - and had wins over Boise State and Air Force - was more impressive. Of course, that season also included giving up 55 points against both EWU and Montana State and an end-of-season loss to Northern Colorado.

Texas' viewpoint: http://www.fbschedul...texas-am-again/ And Texas A&M's response since last year has been this: "Meh. We're SEC now." http://collegefootba...-to-us-anymore/ That was a reversal from previous statements regarding Texas and getting the Longhorns on the schedule (this article was from 2013, remember). UND would be wise to do the exact same thing - move on and don't care. Instead, administration and fans here on the board are coming across like the little brother at the playground begging his big brother to pick him for his team.
-
Not blaming you at all. U of M (and others) all amended their policies regarding Native "mascot" teams after the NCAA gave their seal of approval to the Seminoles. I'd actually give Minnesota, Wisconsin, or Iowa credit for taking a forfeit against FSU to prove their point. Instead, their crusade to end racist "mascots" rings hollow.
-
It's actually good old leftie loonie Representative Betty McCollum who got this ball rolling by sending a letter to the Vikings... Also not sure you were aware of this, but Minnesota's policy on playing schools with certain nicknames was amended to accomodate Florida State.
-
My point is the obvious hypocritical stance (or lack thereof) of the U of Minnesota...standing up against racist symbols...well, unless our policy says they're acceptable racist symbols.
-
So says the school chiding NDSU for playing an overmatched Ferris State squad...while applauding their own scheduling of Valpo as a great "get an idea of where we're at as a program" game? NDSU scheduling Weber State and Eastern Washington is their idea of needling Sioux fans...and some folks are taking the bait hook, line, and sinker.
-
Texas couldn't envision going anywhere without Oklahoma. Agree on NDSU/UND...if UND can put together a couple of successful seasons, I bet NDSU will come calling.
-
...and Texas won't play Texas A&M either... Nebraska in the Big 10 is as much a joke as Colorado (A Big 8 then Big 12 founding member) in the Pac-12.
-
Missouri took over 100 years of conference history and flushed it down the toilet. I applaud Kansas for saying "screw you." And for the record, I'm no fan of the Jayhawks - at all.
-
Seattle (13-3) is in the same division as San Fran (12-4). However, the wilf-card 49ers had a better record than NFC East champion Philadelphia (10-6) ad NFC Central champion Green Bay (8-7-1) last season.
-
Yep, I caught your analogy loud and clear. So now, the NDSU Bison are the 2013 Seattle Seahawks and UND is either the New Orleans Saints or the San Francisco 49ers. However, an apples to apples comparison would have UND as the 2013 Jacksonville Jaguars or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
