  1. Belfield had lost to South Heart I believe 3 times that season. New England had beaten Belfield already that season as well (I think 2 times) and upset the Bantams in the District 29 semi-final game. The Bantams had to rely on the Tigers to take down the Eagles of South Heart in the championship game. New England had lost 2 times to SHHS - by 10 points or more both times. You know the rest - Shawn Flaherty coaches the Tigers to the District 29 title - after being picked in the pre-season poll to finish LAST - and Belfield beats South Heart two nights later in the Challenge Game. By 30.
  2. Having personally witnessed them during that time-frame, I'd concur. That 1985-1986 GU team was a juggernaut. Coach Jim Schroeder of Belfield was starting 4 seniors and 1 junior that season. Sometime in the middle of the year he replaced one of the seniors with junior big man Steve "Cheese" Burger. Gutsy move - but it worked. Some great players on that Belfield team - shooting guard James Gawryluk, point guard Jimmy Grosulak, and forward Mike Shypkoski, to name a few. Gawryluk was the Region 8 title game hero, picking off a Rich Quintus pass and taking it down the court for a layup and a two-point lead late in the game.
  3. BHS had lost to New England four times that season - and watched Glen Ullin absolutely demolish the Tigers by I believe 40 in the semi-finals. Jeff Meissner missed a half-court shot at the buzzer (off the back of the iron - 2" shorter and it would have been a 3-point swish for the victory). Glen Ullin instead lost its 1st game of the season. I've never seen a team and half of a gym vacate the premises so fast. The fans were absolutely stunned. Also of interest: Q) How did Belfield even get into the Region 8 tournament that year? A) The District 29 "Challenge Game."
  4. New England Tigers...of course. Jim Jeske...good player...but quite the attitude.
  5. New England - still open St Mary's of New England - closed South Heart - co-op with Belfield Belfield - co-op with South Heart Beach - still open Golva - closed 6 teams down to 3.
  6. For the life of me, I can't recall who the Region 8 champ was that season...
  7. Todd Domres from Langdon...didn't he drop like 45 on Oxbow6 in the 1986 state tournament?
  8. 1980's Class B basketball...see you over in Community, boys!
  9. Hey Blackheart, was that the 1985 ND Hoopster that you have? What other good scoops do you have in that issue? I'm curious as to what all the districts in Region 8 looked like back then. District 29: Beach Buccaneers Belfield Bantams Golva Tigers South Heart Eagles New England Tigers New England St Mary's Saints
  10. It's a city park and not allowed on the premises. After the game somewhere (the Hoggsbreath is a couple of miles away), sure.
  11. Didn't make the cut for beginner mites in Carrington, ND in the 1970's? OUCH!
  12. I'm looking for members of the board who might be interested in an outdoor broomball game against some of the folks over at GPL. The game would be held in Roseville MN on (likely) a Saturday in early February. Male and female players needed. I don't have any other details available at the moment but am looking for 8-11 players in order to have enough. Must be a poster on the board to participate (or at least registered on the board). No skill level will be turned away so broomball novices, don't be nervous about accepting the challenge.
  13. If this was a LGBTQ protest interrupted by you calling someone a "Fudge Packer"... You know what? Nevermind.
  14. WHAT? No more Bowbells Eskimos and now THIS? I suppose you'll be telling me next that the Woodworth-Pettibone-Robinson Wolfpack and the Grenora Gophers are gone as well.
  15. Yes it was! Man, what an incredible boys basketball team in the 1980's too. Great nickname. Not to be outdone though by the nickname of the school that beat them in the 1986 Region 8 title game: Bantams.
  16. "...I made a good decision to go and play NCAA hockey." Yea, all 9 games of it.
  17. Wasn't goaltending on this team considered a STRENGTH not all that long ago?
  18. Protesters were on the news two nights ago pleading with the Bloomington city attorney to not prosecute the MOA folks and to "put people before corporate profits." She should tell that to the store clerks making $8 or $9 an hour who had to be sent home with no pay because their store had to be closed because of those protesters! As for the "public funding" theory that supposedly means you can do whatever you want because it's not a 100% privately-built building, I challenge you to jump onto Target Field during a ballgame this summer and see how well that goes over.
  19. Yup! I think it was on a Friday night in 1988 or 1989 when the Maroon Loon wiped out and the rope and triangle went flying in front of the zamboni. The driver didn't see it (fans were screaming "STOP!") and ran it over. The zamboni made a growling sound and screeched to a halt. Rope shredded, plastic triangle in a million pieces, zamboni broken. Saturday night, the loon was in the stands roaming around - he wasn't allowed on the ice.
  20. I still can't believe that Barry Melrose pencilled Minnesota into the Stanley Cup Finals the moment they signed Parise and Suter. A couple of seasons later and it sure looks like this team is a mess. Parise was much closer to getting a cup with the Devils than he's been since he arrived in St Paul.

May God bless the souls of the two victims and provide comfort to their families. May he also help those injured recover quickly - physically and mentally. What a horrible tragedy.
  22. Just a bit stunned that such a big fan of the political party that prides itself on diversity and tolerance would use such a slur, that's all.
  23. On the game-winning drive, the Lions were called for what, was it THREE penalties? And now the NFL admits that Suh was held on a key 4th and 6 which would have resulted in a 4th and 16? Wow, just wow. I've cracked the code. Roger Staubach and Tom Landry were the shooters on the grassy knoll.
  24. I see. So any player who wants to can run from the sidelines onto the field for a quick conversation with the ref about a penalty now? D'okay!
