You've made a pretty good argument for why no decent football coach will ever work for NDSU again.

As Kupchella explains here, he never was going to change the name. One sentence out of a very long e-mail he wrote is continually taken out of context and used as "proof" that he would have changed the nickname if not for Ralph Engelstad's intervention. Anyone who claims to know what Kupchella was going to do is just full of it.

Yes, that should be the No. 1 Rule for all coaches. Just ask Bobby Knight.

I think that even I might have been able to score in that situation.

From the Green Mill, it's the Fighting Sioux Coaches' Show with UND hockey coach Dave Hakstol and hosts Tim Hennessy and Scott Swygman. The show started with Scott Koberinski and Jeff Bowen talking about the Little Caesar

I don't think that's possible.

My point exactly. -
What I learned at the much-superior J school north of USD was that the number of sources needed always falls in direct proportion to two factors: 1. How badly do you want to say it publicly? 2. How afraid are you of being scooped by the competition?Al Neuharth undoubtedly has different and lower standards.

Gwozdecky was kicked out of the game. The DU bench received a 2-minute minor for unsportsmanlike conduct and a 10-minute game misconduct (according to this box score). The Pioneers were behind 5-2 at that point and lost 6-2. So it was a great effort by Gwoz to get his team fired up. It really made a difference. Of course, the next night, DU beat the Sioux 7-3. But was that because of Gwoz's theatrics or Prprich's chop to Paukovich's groinal region? When you live by the double-edged sword, it's sometimes hard to tell what works to a team's benefit and what works to its detriment. -
That's assuming we are getting all the facts and the incident happened as reported. Call me paranoid, but I have my doubts based on what we've seen happen on this very board.

As I said, be careful about what you wish for. Breaking the rules is a double-edged sword. It cuts both ways. Derek Shepherd doesn't have a brother named "Doug." He has a father named "Greg." You might be surprised to learn that the father doesn't always agree with the son's calls on the ice. -

You know that I've been criticizing the quality of officiating in the WCHA for years. I'm not debating that point. However, I don't agree that the problem can be solved by coaches going bonkers during or after games. -

Well, he didn't award the shot, and it you think that refs should make decisions during games based on which coach throws the biggest hissy fit, then you better hope that you never get your wish. By the way, who is "Doug Shephard"? Apparently some people need to be reminded of the rules. -

Count me among those who think the BCS is a silly way to pick a national champion. Back in the dark ages when I was playing high school football (those leather helmets rocked!), we played nine games and then the media took a poll that rated the teams. Whichever team got the most votes was considered the state champion. The arguments never ended about which team really deserved to be No. 1. Fortunately, that antiquated method of crowning a champion was scrapped more than 20 years ago. I'd like to think that there's some way that people could make the same or more money off a true playoff system than they do off the bowl games. The whole thing has gotten way out of hand.

No, he's packing his bags to head NDSU's soon-to-be-world-class Division I hockey program. -
redwing77 can certainly speak for himself, but I don't believe that was his point. Nor do I believe that he intended it as any kind of threat. I think you need to reread what he said in the context of Gothmog's comments. That comment was certainly out of line. Gothmog is quite obviously not grahamkracker. Their writing styles are very different and Gothmog is not even making the same arguments. Having read his other posts, I believe that he is an NDSU fan who dislikes UND and disagrees with its position on the nickname issue. That, of course, is his right, but he shouldn't expect his opinion to be popular or well-received here. I have no way of knowing for certain how many American Indians are on which side of this issue. However, the issue is quite often presented as if ALL American Indians are of the same opinion. As you just admitted, they are not. Some people who once supported UND's use of the Fighting Sioux nickname are now against it. Some people who were once against it are now for it. Some tribes in other parts of the country have given strong support to schools that use their names. That tells me that the issue is one of subjective choice, not of objective right or wrong. Therefore, when someone makes the argument that Gothmog and the NCAA do that UND is morally wrong to use the Fighting Sioux nickname, they are saying that their opionion alone is right and everyone else's is wrong. Personally, I don't understand why more American Indians aren't offended by the type of thinking which implies that they aren't intelligent enough to reach a rational decision for themselves. To me, that type of arrogant, condescending, patronizing attitude is the worst type of racism because it assumes that many American Indians don't know their own minds on an issue that directly impacts them. With every exemption it's granted, the NCAA self-righteously proclaims that it -- a group governed and controled almost exclusively by non-Indians -- knows what's best for all Indians. Does that not bother you? It should.

I understand what Brand means. My point was that from the very beginning, the NCAA has shown absolutely no interest or willingness to work with UND to resovle the issue. For him to suggest that the ball is in UND's court is patently ridiculous.
