I saw a car driving 75 down i29 near grand forks today. Middle aged woman. Luckily for the driver she wasn’t in Minnesota on hwy 220 or she’d get a hefty speeding ticket.

Man that one went over your head. I’ll level with you though. Problem is the immunocompromised generally aren’t the ones drinking.
-
Sure alcohol is killing people. But if you decide to sit in your house and drink, have at it, it's your life. If you drink and decide to drive, this is against the law, as this puts other lives in danger. If you drink and decide to assault someone, same thing, you've put others' lives in danger.

Anyone here plan on joining the protest? https://www.grandforksherald.com/news/government-and-politics/5203813-Protest-planned-to-demand-end-to-North-Dakota-business-shutdown

Since I have no experience running a meat packing plant I should feel comfortable with shoulder to shoulder working conditions and an employer encouraging people to come to work sick which caused over 600 infections during the covid pandemic? You do realize that this business's decisions have affected everyone in our region, so each and every one of us has a right to be concerned.

I've read a few articles but I think most here would call it fake news so won't even post any links. They may say they made attempts, well they didn't try hard enough. The infected count speaks for itself.
-
I admittedly have no experience operating a meat packing plant either. With that said common sense says working shoulder to shoulder in a food plant without proper PPE is a no no. And forcing employees to come in to work when they are ill is also not good. Hopefully when and if they re-open they'll have a more responsible operating plan in place.

That depends on who you ask https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/09/who-cited-human-transmission-risk-in-january-despite-trump-claims

600 plus infections, tied to a single employer outbreak, is bound to spread with no county or statewide shelter in place happening. Unfortunately this means the deaths will follow.
-
Not gonna argue with this. Smithfield's Sioux Falls plant being shut down indefinitely sure isn't going to help the situation. If they would have acknowledged and addressed what changes had to be made in their plants months or even weeks ago they'd still probably be operating at some level in SD. Instead we still have people arguing that we aren't New York or Chicago. Well it's getting too late for that argument.
-
Probably because they also think they are exempt from social distancing and measures that would reduce the spread of the virus as they are deemed essential. I mean there's a supply chain that we can't disrupt at all costs right?
-
It's no surprise this happened in South Dakota with the way their governor has touted on Fox News how well their state is doing and that they are not New York. She continues to defend her stance saying they are not Chicago even though the Sioux Falls infection rate per capita has exceeded Chicago's. Unfortunately this attitude is passed down to the employer level and what's done is done. Maybe we can get something positive out of this and regulations will prevent this from happening over and over again, probably not in South Dakota though. I don't know the right number but I can tell you that I'd take 50% over 0%.
-
Wouldn't 50% be better than 0%?

We can go back over three months and look again at what the World Health Organization was warning if you'd like, rather than stop funding them. Every business has had to make adjustments due to the pandemic. Just because a business is deemed essential doesn't exempt them from changes that need to be made. Smithfield Foods thought they were exempt and how's that going for them? What are all the pig farmers going to do with all those pigs now?
-
It’s unrealistic that a business change their model to run at say 50% production in order to allow some social distancing and extra cleaning to be done? It’s unrealistic for an employer to implement an if you are sick policy to stay home rather than forcing sick to show up to work? What’s realistic is that they are now shut down indefinitely. If the governors can force certain businesses to be shut down they surely can implement some policies for employers.
-
The owners of the plant and the governor of South Dakota blatantly failed to protect the workers at this plant as well as the safety of South Dakota residents. It didn’t need to shut down due to the Coronavirus but I’m sure there’s a number of measures that could have been taken to prevent 600 plus from being infected. Yet they continued to work shoulder to shoulder, thousands sharing the same break rooms and restrooms, and were urged to come to work while ill. If this is is too difficult for you to comprehend maybe you’d be a good candidate to work for Smithfield when they ramp production back up.
-
Oh yes I understand everything is essential, unfortunately more essential than human life. I just realized I have some Smithfield bacon in the freezer packed in March. Do you want it?
-
Thanks I missed you guys! It is a mess but it was a mess that was allowed to happen. How essential of a business is it now that they are shut down?
-
South Dakota now houses one of the nation's largest coronavirus hot spots The CDC recommended no gatherings of 10 plus people. The SD governor touted "we are not NY" and wanted to leave the decision to the people. Now South Dakota is home to one of the largest coronavirus clusters in the United States.

Simply replying. Would you prefer I resort to a personal attack? My mind may not be complex enough for that. Have fun fun with your right wing circle jerk between 6 members im out:)
-
How was i not on topic? The cdc is recommending the use of face masks in public to protect others from what you might have. Very few face masks being used out in public in North Dakota and we are still mostly open for business and cramming ourselves into shooing centers like sardines. Also so there’s a big difference between controlling diabetes and the spread of an airborne virus.
-
You think it’s just going away after the peaks and shelter in place orders are lifted? i can be blunt too and will make sure my family and friends will be staying out of the lane of your medical practice which obviously chooses extreme right wing stances over life. Fauci was just on national tv this morning saying states that remain open are putting their people at risk. Obviously you disagree with him, but eventually Burgum will fall in line and realize this as well.
-
Overwhelming our hospital systems causing thousands of extra Americans to die is also not sustainable from a society standpoint. Hopefully that vaccine is still going to be here in a few months. Staying on topic...How to stay healthy now? Don’t go cram into hugo’s and target like everyone else in grand forks yesterday.
-
The first models that I heard were from many were “this is a cough”, “not as bad as the flu”, “this is their new hoax”, and “one day this will magically disappear”. Like it or not I think we we are learning the stay at home orders and social distancing will be all that we can do to reduce deaths from this virus until there is a reliable treatment or vaccine.

More countries that were prepared had learned from MERS in 2003.
