Looks like they gutted USCHO...

Great find. Mail that to the NCAA.
-
I'm looking forward to this Miller guy succeeding him.....

Taken Alive's comments are quite clever. If the NCAA reads them, and if they care, he's painted them into a box. Here's a NA spokesman who is claiming they will choose to act in the interests of "money" and "oppress" a race of people. Who wants to be accused of that? I think it's just an attempt by Taken Alive to push buttons.

I agree too.
-
Good point. Maybe they are looking for ANY reason NOT to reject it.

That does get you pumped to watch college hockey.
-
It's the same thing with Vanek and defense. Some people can't mention one without the other.

fixed your post Seriously, good to hear that Murphy is back with the Wild. Also will be nice to watch former players like Lundbohm and Schneekloth. edit: fixed MY post

A bit of a curve to the topic, but not worth a thread of its own. I'm enjoying reading each morning in the sports page how players, coaches, scouts, etc are all up in arms about all the penalties being called in the preseason NHL games. Was NO ONE paying attention to the college game last season? Did they not anticipate this? For me its an illustration of the ignorance of some of these NHL affiliated guys that this is coming as a surprise. When I say ignorance, I'm talking about the Tampa Bay coach or scout who said that Smaby's development was being hurt by playing in the college game. It's not the only instance of that kind of head in the sand comment (wasn't there a comment out of Edmonton along the same lines about Greene?). Ask Phoenix how the college game hurt Jones' development. These guys have to be patient and live through the few months of pain that the new points-of-emphasis will inflict on the way to a healthier game. Fortunately, the NHL executive VP is on the ball: Strib Story on the NHL

I believe Green Bay

Chris VandeVelde - Forward - Shoots left - Lincoln Stars/USHL Jake Marto - Defense - Shoots left - Omaho Lancers/USHL

There are a number of names out there that may or may not become future Fighting Sioux. Some are strong possibilities like Mario Lamoureux and others might be pure speculation. This is a good place to keep that stuff in one place. Some that come to mind: Mario Lamoureux - 2 goals and 1 assist in 1 Buc Bowl game with Tri-City of the USHL Darcy Zajac - started off the preseason hot with a hat trick but in 2 regular season games has no goals and 1 assist. Chay Genoway - is playing D for Vernon of the BCHL and has no points in 3 games. Michael Forney - currently playing football

I might be stealing jk's thunder as I think he started a similar thread at the beginning of last year. This thread can serve as a place to post updates on COMMITTED Sioux recruits performance on current teams. As someone else pointed out Chris VandeVelde had 2 goals and 1 assist in a Buc Bowl game for Lincoln right now. He's only played in one game and most of the team has played 2 yet he leads the team in points already! Also with a +3 +/-. To this point only VandeVelde and Marto are committed for next year. Hopefully we'll have a few more exciting names to watch before too long.

I think orange and red clash.

I believe someone has posted a link to newspaper stories saying Mario left a WHL training camp and is trying to make a decision on playing MJ or D1 hockey. I believe those same articles referenced that Mario has a scholarship offer from UND for 2007. If he's playing for Des Moines maybe he's made a decision. Ah...here it is.

pssst...just use the "edit" button.

Unless some of our guys are way better than my impressions I don't think the point is above arguing that MN's class could be better than UND's. I personally don't think the gap is very big, but I can't argue with their opinion. After putting the following comparison together I will admit that the gap would have to be quite small. I still believe the argument can be made the MN's crop is better, and I can understand the arguments that UND's is better. Arguments for MN is that, though it is a smaller class, they likely have a couple of players who will be an edge above what UND can put on the ice. Arguments for the Sioux is that this appears to be such a strong class almost all the way through the depth. To have the apparent quality of these players down through a large class is likely very unusual if not unprecedented. While the class might not possess a potential star goalie like Frazee (which IS a big deal IMO) and a Kessel, the 2nd tier is just as talented as what MN can put out there and there's more of it. I can dig it both ways. I mostly look forward to digging watching the Sioux skate this year! Toews < Kessel = Toews could be just as good or better. Or he might not be. He certainly looks to be an outstanding player, but he's also very young, and has not played, consistently, the level of competition that Kessel has. So when evaluating players on paper, it's easier to have confidence that Kessel would be the better of the two, at least this year. Kozek < Wheeler = Wheeler give MN the OTHER top 5 draft pick. Draft pick doesn't mean anything but anyone hoping that Wheeler's relatively paltry USHL numbers might spell B-U-S-T probably had to take some note of the recent WJC tryouts where Wheeler raised some eyebrows. From what I've been picking up Kozek might be an awfully good one too. Draft position doesn't necessarily tell the whole story as he doesn't possess Wheeler's "NHL size". Kozek might turn out to be a smaller version of Bo. I'll give Wheeler the nod because he's a good skater with size who can shoot. Kozek is a good skater who can shoot. Lee > Anderson = I'm not sold that Lee is going to come gunning out of the gate, but from what I've picked up over time he's almost if not as offensively skilled and might be a bit better defensively, and he's got better size. Maybe not a large difference between these players, but even if Lee doesn't outshine Anderson Chorney has a chance to as it appears he IS that good. And Chorney has no one to match up against. Watkins = Bostrom - Both are supposed to be very fast, skilled players. I'll rate they cancel each other out. Bostrom is 3/4 of a year older than Watkins. Both have played a year of juniors and done very well. Frazee - Top rated goalie recruit and has experience to prove his hype. Goalie is an extremely important position and getting a really good one is difficult. Walski doesn't even merit a comparison. MN's group takes a large step up just on a recruit like this. Oshie = Stoa = Oshie is a first round pick who doesn't have a lot of size, Stoa is a 2nd rounder with "NHL size". So maybe I'm underestimating Oshie. But he's coming out of high school and Stoa has been tested successfully against a higher caliber of competition. Stoa's knock is a potentially Tallacksonian effort. Oshie could win this comparison big time or this could end up pretty even. With Oshie's unknowns I'll rate it even. Finley - MN has no incoming recruit to match up against Finley. Is the big man ready for D1 primetime? Or will he take a year or so to catch up to the game? Again, he's relatively young, though not Toews young. Jones - MN has no one available to match up with what looks to be a very good defensive defenseman. Chorney - Chorney performed well at Shattuck last year and shined in junior level competition this spring and summer. If Lee falters Chorney could challenge Anderson for who the best defenseman is between these 2 rookie classes. Duncan - Duncan could potentially step in for Watkins to challenge Bostrum if Watkins falters. Duncan is small but fast and could score a ton at midget and junior A levels. Miller - Miller is coming off of an injured shoulder. Not considered the talent of a Wheeler but after a slow initial start to the season last year kept pace scoring-wise with phenom Blake Wheeler. Miller than hurt his shoulder to end the season and Wheeler continued to improve. Hard to say if Wheeler would have left him behind or not. Miller's numbers were not stellar, but if Wheeler can be said to have been held back because his team wasn't any good, is it possible the same could be said of Miller? Yet it's fair to say that Miller's numbers might have been better than they would have been because he had Wheeler on the team? What I don't remember anymore is if they assisted much on each other's goals very often last year. Martens - Could be a good, solid player for the Sioux Alexander - Might find ice time hard to find Walski - we won't compare him to Frazee for his own sake

And, as ScottM said, the nickname doesn't cause this to happen. It would happen if the nickname was the "Flickertails". The nickname doesn't cause racism or bigotry. It just doesn't.

Yes, and don't you think they would be rallying to change the name of Sioux Falls, Sioux City, etc? I mean, who would stand for Wop Falls? No one.

No, I DON'T think the word Sioux is offensive to the Tribal Nations, considering how many refer to themselves as Sioux. Whatever the origins of the word, the negative connotation long ago lost its meaning. Anyone heard of Yankee Doodle Dandy? The British penned that ditty to make fun of the colonists. Funny, it's part of our national song library now. In fact, there are various reports of the origin of the term Yankee. One option says it was a derogatory term for soldiers in the Revolutionary army. Anyone heard of the New York Yankees? Time changes things, and any offense being taken by the word Sioux at this point in time, IMO, is voluntarily assumed by the offended person. Considering it wasn't long ago that the casino (Prairie Knights?) was named the Dakota Sioux Casino, I think I can rest my argument right there.

Don't forget Toews is a fair bit younger than most of the guys on that list.
-
Well, the TEAM is named the Fighting Sioux. I doubt they feel bad when a gopher fan yells "Sioux Suck" either. But BOTH examples (someone yelling at a river and someone yelling at a team) require someone to HEAR what is being yelled, and end up offended by it. Doreen's river example doesn't wash. Put GrahamKracker on the bank of that river and he'd go "Fighting Sioux" on you. This is what I don't get. When I think of "The Fighting Sioux" I think of Crazy Horse's merry band that wiped out Custer. For UND's sports teams, it's that type of attitude and ability that merits association. And I don't see why this is somehow abusive.

Depends on what you are copying. Getting the crowd into the SSB would only charge the atmosphere and I'm all for it.
