Holy smokes. I wish I had one of those bowing smileys.

How is a logo of a Sioux warrior "racial stereotyping"?
-
Wait, I thought the dark blobs were the Sioux?

Maybe he was on the ice with a bunch of squirts, but he looked really big.

Was surprised to see the 2nd PP unit was Porter, Watkins and Kaip. 3rd unit appeared to be Miller, Zajac and Kozek

I saw a few minutes of the gopher game. Man, that O'Brien is HUGE.

My thougths after watching on my fuzzy computer: One of our D (looked tall) tried to poke check a QU player coming across our blueline in the first period. Seems that's a place to take the body. Our guy got walked. Fortunately Lammy came up big. I couldn't see the # of who it was. Lee made some nice plays coming back to break up plays tonite. For those of us who would like to see a more physical side to his game, at about the 5 min mark of the 3rd he rode a QU player HARD into the side boards to ride him out of the play. It was a great play to neutralize that player and free up the puck to be cleared from the zone. I now see what the talk about Genoway is about. This kid is exciting to watch. I'm not sure I know the difference between a player who is a "good skater" and one who needs to work on his skating, but I bet Genoway is the former. He can wheel and deal, stop and change directions in a moment, all in all very dynamic. He seemed to play with confidence and with speed. He's going to be very fun to watch. He looked as good offensively as any of our defensemen, from what I could tell. I can see why Hak wanted to put Oshie, Duncan and Toews together. That line is men against boys out there. How Oshie keeps his skates like he does I don't know. Radke's second penalty in the 3rd period was a bad one. It's too bad it cost Lammy a well deserved shut-out. I thought VandeVelde looked like he was going to take some time to adjust to the D1 game for most of the game tonite. He just looked slow and tentative out there. But half-way through the 3rd period it seemed like he started playing more aggressively. He played physically and helped create turnovers, and made a nice pass in the offensive zone shortly before Zajac scored his 2nd goal. My opinion began to change as the period went along. Hopefully Chris can build on that in the next few games. Lammy looked very quick and very good tonite. He made an excellent glove save with just a minute and a half on a point blank shot by an open QU player. Excellent reflexes. It's going to be hard for anyone to beat him out if he plays this well. Haks post game comments: The positives outweighed the negatives tonite. It was good to see Martens score his first goal. Zajac scored 2 goal scorer goals. They were nice plays and he showed good patience on the 2nd one. We took 2-3 dumb penalties. If you play hard you'll take 4-5 a game and we can accept that, but not the extra 2-3 dumb penalties. That's when you get yourself in trouble. Thought QU played a pretty good game. Happy with Lammy. He made tough saves, but didn't make them look tough. That's what we're looking for from him. 3-4 times we gambled on D and a couple times it worked and a couple times Lammy had to make the saves. That's ok to be aggressive at this point in the season, but if the same things are happening in a couple of months that's not ok. Darcy Zajac interview: 1st goal just hit my stick. Lucky break for me. 2nd goal I just threw it on net. When TH told him that Hak said they were "goal scorer's goals" he just laughed. Brad Miller Interview: I thought that shot went in but then I started doubting it when play went on. It's been a while since I've scored. I'm trying to shoot the puck more. The coaches want me to get to the net and get more chances. TV called Zajac the PoTG. Radio gave Zajac the first star and Miller the 2nd star. Sioux looked pretty good tonite. Will be interesting to see how the 2nd game goes.

If you couldn't watch it, this was a great play by Fabian. Fabian carried the puck in on the right side of the goalie and took a narrow angle shot that was blocked and bounced back to Fabian. He took it behind the net and held it along the boards behind the net for a while while his line changed. He was getting pushed over nad he noticed he had Zajac hustling into the zone. As he fell he backhanded the puck from the boards out into the slot. Unfortunately Zajac was not able to get a handle on it and it slipped past him. Martens was trailing the play and took the puck in the high slot and with a defender going down, put it past the goalie top shelf. Excellent play by Fabian, and good shot by Martens. Zajac follows within seconds by hitting the post!

That's because McMahon isn't around to call him on it.

Brad Schlossman's blog has the lines posted and Jones is playing.

This is always hard this time of year. Prior to the start of the year you can make up your line combos based on the reputation of the recruits. Later in the year when you've seen them play you have more info to go on. Right now you have comments that you read from credible to less than credible sources on how good a player is looking, which rookies are surprising to this point, etc. And you only read things and don't have context for most of what you read. So it can get very dangerous. Just on the little bit of the game I saw last weekend, and what I've read so far from posters or from notes on the coaches show, I'll go with the following: Duncan - Toews - Kozek (I don't think the experiment to put both Oshie and Toews on the same line worked last weekend. 2nd line didn't threaten too much it seemed to me. Here we have a mix of scoring touch, puck control, and a bit of physical play) Porter - Oshie - Miller (Another nice mix of physical play and effort, and some finesse with Miller) Fabian - Kaip - Bishop (A shutdown line that is smart, plays hard, with an element of speed) VandeVelde - Watkins - Zajac (Watkins provides the experience on this line in bringing along a couple of newbies. Coach said he's a strong player with a good defensive side. This line brings speed in the middle and size and grit, and potential to score some, and hopefully not a liability on the ice) Martens - Forney (I'm predicting we don't have clear line-up favorites, so Saturday I suggest that Forney replaces VandeVelde, and Martens replaces either Zajac or Bishop in the lineup. As for where everybody plays, well......) On Defense: Lee - Chorney Genoway - Radke Bina - Foyt

You are correct that many or even most did. But at least one of the biggest continues to spin it that way.

Very nice! Simple logos on helmets are the best. The crossed sabres would be excellent.
-
Yes, straight yellow stripe. While we're at it, let's get rid of the diagonal lines on the Sioux hockey sweaters.

Those really aren't maroon and gold, are they? Diggler, can you wear those colors?

YOU NEVER EVEN CALLED ME BY MY NAME Written by Steve Goodman Performed by David Allen Coe It was all that I could do to keep from cryin' Sometimes it seems so useless to remain You don't have to call me darlin', darlin' You never even call me by my name. You don't have to call me Waylon Jennings And you don't have to call me Charlie Pride. You don't have to call me Merle Haggard, anymore. Even though your on my fightin' side. CHORUS And I'll hang around as long as you will let me And I never minded standin' in the rain. You don't have to call me darlin', darlin' You never even call me by my name. I've heard my name a few times in your phone book I've seen it on signs where I've laid But the only time I know, I'll hear David Allan Coe Is when Jesus has his final judgement day. CHORUS... Well, a friend of mine named Steve Goodman wrote that song and he told me it was the perfect country and western song I wrote him back a letter and told him it was NOT the perfect country and western song because he hadn't said anything about Momma, or trains, or trucks, or prison, or gettin' drunk. Well, he sat down and wrote another verse to the song and he sent it to me and after reading it, I realized that my friend had written the perfect country and western song. And I felt obliged to include it on this album. The last verse goes like this here: Well, I was drunk the day my Mom got outta prison. And I went to pick her up in the rain. But, before I could get to the station in my pickup truck She got runned over by a damned old train. CHORUS: So I'll hang around as long as you will let me And I never minded standin' in the rain. No, You don't have to call me darlin', darlin' You never even call me, I wonder why you don't call me Why don't you ever call me by my name.

It's either a tactic with handling the goalies or else I found it interesting that he seems comfortable with the idea of Grieco playing in nets at any time. He's a very young kid to throw out there. Was there any clue regarding the comment on Genoway whether "top 6 forward" meant "in his career" or "right now"? I worry about Forney's shoulder. It's good to hear he's had a couple of good practices, and I trust the coaches not to rush him. Would hate for him to suffer recurring problems. I can't wait to see how things develop over the next couple of weekends.

Check's already in the mail.

I bet I know a David Allen Coe/Steve Goodman song might be Zach's favorite.

PCM, thanks a ton for the work you put in on the recaps. If you choose to continue doing them please know how much those of us in the "boonies" appreciate getting the word on our favorite program.

Mo-Ther shoots, Jesus saves!

In the play I was referring to all he needed to do was get in the way, push the other guy around a bit and not allow him to skate unimpeded into the slot for a shot. Lee went for the poke check and missed, though with one step he could have put his body in the way.

Had Mother Theresa suited up for the wrong team she would have been referred to as a "dirty Gopher" too.
