  1. OK, so its Friday night at the Frozen Four, and "Ry-an Dun-can" had just won the Hobey Baker Award, to the very loud cheers of the assembled gathering, and the Skills Competition is about to begin, and the coach of the West team is announced as Bill Selman. So I get to thinking, he was coach at UND in the late 60's, and left to ultimately coach St Louis University. But I bet he coached Bob Duncan about that time, and isn't that a cool connection. All this got me thinking about how little I know of that period of Sioux hockey history. I'd be interested in what people know of that period in Sioux hockey history. Stories, info ... hey its the off season.
  2. After having some time to digest the game, but not watch the tape: 1) Jerry York did a terrific job of using the last change to create mismatches. This is especially true in the 2nd period, when we had troubles getting the puck out of the zone, and they would be changing one guy at a time. It definitely wore us out, and when combined with the difficulties the Kozek-Kaip-Fabian line had with their speed, meant trouble. OTOH, until the penalty late in the second, I thought we were going to survive all that pressure and come out with the lead. 2) The 2nd BC goal was the key, I thought. It too was set up with a zone clear that we didn't get all the way down, and that enabled BC to get fresh guys out, but we only got one guy to change. 3) When Oshie made the great play to tie it, I thought we were set. Our legs looked good in the 3rd, and the 4th line had a couple nice shifts, keeping the puck 200' away from Lammy. 4) Shots were pretty misleading, as BC threw the puck at the net anytime they got inside the blue line. I thought true scoring chances were a lot more even. 5) I thought Jonny! looked a bit tired. I was sure that Duncan was setting up Schneider by going far side about 5 times in a row, but he never got a good look late from The Angle. Bottom line, a game that could have gone either way. Just like nearly all the BC-UND games the last 10 years...
  3. Congratulations Ryan! Another terrific turnout of Sioux fans, and the arena echoed with chants of "Ry-an Dun-can" during TV "timeouts", along with music from the the Fighting Sioux Pep Band (thanks for making the trek guys!) He is one humble guy. Considering the outstanding competition he faced, I'm surprised and thrilled. I loved the reactions from Bob Duncan and Dave Hakstol after the announcement. PS I got to tell Mr. Kubes "nice job with the Hobey award" later on ...
  4. That's just plain awful. I think of Maine as an adopted brother, because they deal with a lot of the same issues UND does -small population, geographically out of the way, etc. And their fans are always terrific, even after a tough loss to State. Condolences to Whitehead and the Maine hockey family.
  5. Refreshing and nice comments from Coach York. I agree with Porter - I never felt like it was over, even down 2 with 40 seconds left. BC deserved the win, but our guys - as always - kept battling to the final buzzer. Just one of the many reasons to be proud of this Sioux team.
  6. Just got back from the game and need to say how impressed I was at the multiple thousands of Sioux fans that made the trip. Well done.
  7. Holy Cross is unbeaten all time in NCAA play. Except against the UND Fighting Sioux.
  8. At age 2, Taylor Chorney bit off his dad's finger trying to get The Ring. His dad sent him to Aragorn at Shattuck to grow up.
  9. [ the article? same old stuff, as somebody wiser than me said] I am proud to say my alma mater does arguably the most, and the best, of big state-sponsored universities, to provide opportunities for Native Americans, including all the programs which have been well-documented on these pages. I hope UND continues to be a leader in that area. Sports is entertainment. Finding a way out of poverty by getting an education is real life. (Not that I get a vote on stuff like this, but) I'd vote in a heartbeat for spending money to provide those opportunities.
  10. Just wondering what Maine's record and Michigan State's record is with their new Nike Swift jerseys ...
  11. ... we might get Michigan State in the final. (knock on wood we get there) ... (I think) that team lost to Maine early in the season also the '87 team benefitted from upperclassmen leadership on each line, which is also similar to this year
  12. How do you REALLY feel? Don't hold back.
  13. My ID says I'm over 21 and whenever I get in after being carded, I make sure to do the "ID pop" just to tick off the underagers outside.
  14. Phil. It could happen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pp1WU-wYe3w...ted&search=
  15. Buy 'em at the door. Take the risk its not sold out.
  16. Welcome to siouxsports.com. The BC-UND games have been fun to watch, even last year's which could have been really boring after the first period. Instead, it featured a team that never gave up (UND) versus a team that never believed it had it won (BC) until the final buzzer.
  17. Triouxper, the historical significance of these games cannot be overstated. Just over 20 decades ago, the Corps of Discovery, part of an empire whose symbol was - and still is - an Eagle, departed from the banks of the Mississippi River, heading upstream into unknown territory. The expedition was led by Captains William Clark and Meriwether Lewis, who coincidentally looks a lot like Jerry York, doncha think? They entered Sioux territory, and were allowed to pass peacibly. Despite holding the power to destroy, the Sioux held back. Ultimately, the Corps of Discovery, arguably one of the best assemblages of people ever, would make many promises, but few were kept. In April of 2007, the Fighting Sioux return to the banks of the Mississippi, with an opportunity for revenge upon the Eagles. -----ziip --- Either that or else its just gonna be a da## good trio of hockey games.
  18. Except the World Juniors that year were REALLY good. Fitz, thanks for the note. I hope we see Michigan more frequently in the future; the games are always great ones.
  19. I am going to make a Trail of Carnage T-shirt and wear it in St Louis. That is CLASSIC.
  20. I work alongside a bunch of BC fans (yes, here in Minneapolis, land of 10,000 excuses). Anybody got any good repertoire?
  21. Geez, we play BC in the playoffs almost as often as Mankato.
  22. ... provided that "father figure" includes "kick your a$$" if you aren't getting the job done.
  23. I think the Sioux cycling was lessened a bit by the goal placement, but we got two goals on passes off the back boards that might not have been scorable if the net were farther forward.
  24. I have said this before but its time to say it once again. I am absolutely thrilled at the manner in which Coach Hakstol, his staff, and this team, represent my alma mater. Hakstol: In press conferences, articulate and complementary to the opponents, win or lose. Just about every postgame show (or listen to the press conference yesterday), talks about the pride of wearing the jersey, what it means, and how that should influence how the guys behave on the ice. During the game Sunday, Sioux put the go-ahead goal on the board in the 3rd, and he does not permit himself the luxury of a smile, just a steely glare, watching and observing. After the game, in the handshake line, no smile either, but an easy to lip-read "nice game". All this character, steely resolve, shows in how this team presents itself on the ice. They act like they've been there before. They play together as well as any North Dakota team in the past decade. They have their weak spots, and they cover for each other. And they do it all in a humble, low-key kinda way. Its true that teams take on the character of their coaches. Its also true they take on the character of their best players - insert list here - all unwilling to admit maybe they are the reason for tonight's win. I find it refreshing in an old-fashioned, Bud Grant kinda way. Other teams can have their jersey poppers, their guys with egos too big to fit in the locker room. I'm happy with my team just the way they are. Gentlemen, thank you. Win or lose, you make it a privilege for me to call myself a fan of UND hockey. Go Sioux!
