  1. Haven't talked to him for a while. I'm assuming he'll coach at the UND camps and he also does the Top Dog camps in the cities when he's not doing UND camps. I know there are a lot of locals in Eau Claire that have ice right now. (local college players and players from the area who are in juniors and college) So I'm sure he's on the ice and working to get better no matter where he is.

It looks like he is playing in a 4x4 league in the Twin Cities.

MN 4 on 4 Hockey Rosters

  2. USA Hockey has released it's roster for the 2008 evaluation camp that it puts on every year. 2009 Sioux recruit Danny Kristo has been invited to the camp. Almost every season USA takes 1-2 high school kids so Kristo has a shot at the actual roster.

Other WCHA or future WCHA players invited:

Mike Lee-Goaltender-Roseau H.S.-St. Cloud State recruit

    Cade Fairchild-Defenseman-University of Minnesota sophomore

    Jake Gardiner-Defenseman-University of Wisconsin freshman

    Ryan McDonagh-Defenseman-University of Wisconsin sophomore

    Aaron Ness-Defenseman-University of Minnesota freshman

Jack Connolly-Forward-University Of Minnesota Duluth freshman

    Jake Hansen-Forward-University of Minnesota freshman

    Mike Hoeffel-Forward-University of Minnesota sophomore

    Danny Kristo-Forward-USA NTDP-North Dakota recruit

    Drew LeBlanc-Forward-St. Cloud State freshman

    Jordan Schroeder-Forward-University of Minnesota freshman

    Patrick White-Forward-Universtiy of Minnesota sophomore

Looking at the full invite list and the final css rankings, it looks like Fienhage is the highest ranked '90 player not invited to camp. There are a couple '90 D ranked lower (Comrie and Warsofsky).

Too bad - I don't think he would have made the final team but the camp would have been good for him.

  3. With everyone decided if they are coming back or not, (besides Finley) the roster should be close to complete for next season. Put together your roster.

    Lose:

    T.J. Oshie

    Robbie Bina

    Taylor Chorney

    Rylan Kaip

    Kyle Radke

    Michael Forney

    J.P. Lamoureux

    Joe Finley (Has not decided)

    Gain:

    Mario Lamoureux

    David Toews

    Jason Gregoire

    Ben Blood

    Brett Hextall

Andrew MacWilliam (most likely will join due to Chorneys loss)

    Brad Eidsness

Cory Fienhage (If Finley leaves, Fienhage comes. I like Gleason but he needs a year in the USHL to gain strengh to play at this level.)

    Forwards:

Seniors: Ryan Martens, Andrew Kozek, Brad Miller, Ryan Duncan, Matt Watkins

    Juniors: Darcy Zajac, Chris VandeVelde

Sophomores: Brett Davidson, Evan Trupp, Matt Frattin, Brad Malone

    Davidson-Lamoureux-Hextall

    Finley-Genoway

    LaPoint-Jones

I don't know when it was updated but CH recruiting page now lists MCW and Gleason as 2009 and Fienhage as 2008.

  4. Agreed!!! He needs a lot of work and, being a senior, not sure how much more college hockey will help him.

... which is why I would bet he leaves. I'm sure 12 months ago the coaching staff was planning on it as well (see stockpile of D recruits).

  5. Oilers prospect determined to make professional move pay off

    Edmonton Journal

"It was time. I had played three years and I felt I had accomplished a lot of the things at school I had set out to do and I'm 21 now.

"Something just clicked," continued the defenceman who captained Team USA at the 2007 world juniors. "I was always pretty confident that physically, I was going to be able to make the jump, but I think that mentally you have to make sure that you're ready because there's no turning back."

Good Luck Taylor - Hello Corey Fienhage.

  6. Hastings was a good defenseman in his own right. Now he is going to be coaching the defense at the U....I see no problem with this hire. That and considering the good defenseman that have come from Omaha to the Gophers, I have no concern. Lucia, Hill and Hastings will be a heck of a coaching trio.

Lucia can hire who he wants - if he thinks Hastings is the best hire, fine.

However, I think it is a plus for a program that has a history/tradition of success to have a coaching staff that has a direct link to that history/tradition. I think it helps in recruiting and on ice/behind the bench.

I believes this leads to the "family" atmosphere that recruits/former players bring up when they speak about our favorite team.

Everything else being equal, it gives our staff a plus to be able to speak first hand about the history of our program to recruits. I have talked to some our recruits and they all bring this up.

  7. I personally think the whole outdoor hockey game thing is retarded but that is just my HMO.

I watched the game in Buffalo this year but it bugged me that they had to stop the game to

clean the snow off the ice.

    Grouchy, aren't we.

I bet if we had a 20k+ remodeled Memorial Stadium vs Alerus, we would be all over an outdoor game in GF.

I will take an outdoor game anyday vs. a "glowing puck" or some other gimmick like that.

  8. It's way too early to call him a bust. If and when he fails to live up to expectations in the NHL, then and only then can he be called a bust. He's been one of the best players in college hockey the past three years, so other than irrational and obsessive hatred for the college team he plays for I can't for the life of me understand why you would say he's a bust.

    ? ? ? ?

3rd team WCHA as a Jr. - no league awards as a freshman/sophmore (no all rookie team either).

He might have had the talent to be "one of the best players in college hockey" but face it - he did not produce.

  9. And I was the one who mentioned Dylan Olsen first on these boards. Base on what I saw he will be an outstanding D-man if he decides on the college route. Great offensive skills and shut down defensive skills. Can play both sides of the rink equally well.

A scout I talked to that saw Olsen/McW play said that Olsen>McW.

  10. This is understandable. My only question is why is the signing taking place in August if the terms are agreed to at this point?

The team also needs to make plans to bring one more D in.

    My bet is Fienhage.

  11. A blue chip recruit is a special player. He's a guy where you look and say, that guys going to be an absolute supper star at this level. It's hard to put a number on how many they are year to year because it changes, but I'd say on any given year there are between 4 and 8 blue chip college hockey recruits. The term blue chip is thrown around way to literally now days.

Now obviously there are multiple cases of non blue chippers coming in and having better freshman seasons than blue chippers its just the way it goes. I by no means was making fun of Brad E. by saying he's not a blue chipper hes just not one of the top 10 recruits in the nation.

In my opinion last years blue chippers: (Keep in mind this is before the season started)

Kyle Turris, JVR, Ryan McDonagh, Nick Petrecki, Ian Cole, Kevin Shattenkirk, Brendan Smith, Tyler Bozak, Max Pacioretty

In my opinion here are this years blue chippers:

David Toews, Aaron Ness, Jordan Schroeder, Jason Gregoire, Vinny Saponari, Jake Gardiner, Zac Dalpe

    Not Joe Colborne?

  12. All this talk by Sioux fans about the Gopher program imploding the last few years is just wishful thinking and nothing more. A program that's imploding doesn't win two Macnaughton Cups and a Broadmoor trophy, which by the way is three more banners than the Sioux have won in that time. The Frozen Four is great great but the only thing those appearances have resulted in is Hakstol becoming known as the new "Woog."

Woog wasn't fired for not winning the big one. He was fired for having 2 horrible seasons after 12 winning seasons in a row. 14 years is a long run anyway.

    Woog Stats

  13. I think Duncan's drop in points last year was not b/c of the loss of Toews, but more so due to the fact that teams now knew to keep an eye on him and he received alot more attention and harassment. This will still be the case next year, and depending on who he is lined up with, he may yet again have a drop in points, but I don't agree with the idea that he needs to be surrounded by good players to be good, its more of a matter of teams keying in on him more and more, especially with TJ gone now. I still think he will put up good numbers, maybe just more assists than goals. Although if Gregoire and Toews are as good as we think they are, that line could rival the DOT line of 2 years ago.

We subtracted 18 goals from JT and another 13 from Porter - only Vande and Kozek picked up the slack, the freshmen did not.

The opposition had fewer guys to key on last year vs. 06-07 and Duncs received most of the attention.

  14. I found this discussion in relation to Wheeler's move recently interesting - relevent to our recruits about to be drafted.

    ------------------------------------------------

For the past 2-3 years, since the new CBA was put into effect, pro teams have been coming after their drafted college players, mostly after their junior year in order to avoid risking the loss of that player to free agency on August 15th after their senior season ended.

"Now, if a player is 1) drafted, and 2) plays juniors for a year before going to college
