  1. Now stickboy you're just jealous cause you know you are never going to be able to wear the Sioux Jersey. Give the kid a chance before you go making negative remarks

Not negative - just a prediction. He very low in the food chain of Sioux forwards. Not everyone can play - that's just a fact.

Because he doesn't crack the lineup doesn't make him a bad person/player. He knew when he came what his role would be. Even if he doesn't crack the lineup he can keep the other forwards honest during practice.

Hextall, Lammy, and Malone all can fill the tough guy role as well.

  2. Hello everyone, I am back. After a summer of travels without checking my blackberry every few minutes on friday and saturday nights or shutting myself in with the internet feed or spending money on flat beer and mediocre grub at Joe's, I am once again psyched for those special 6 months that are Sioux hockey :silly: .

We have a good mix of talented freshmen and proven veterans.

Knowing little about the rookies other than a few highlights, the scouting reports and their stats in junior; here is my conjecture.

Scoring 1: Trupp with Duncan and Gregoire

Scoring 2: Vande with Watkins and Kozek

Checking: Zajac with Martens and Davidson

Scoring 3: Hextall with Toews and Frattin

    Scratches: Miller, Lamoureaux and Malone

    D1: Finley and Genoway

    D2: Jones and Marto

    D3: Blood/Fienhage and Lapoint

    Scratches: Fienhage or Blood

Goalie: starts with a rotation between Walski and Eidsness

I put Trupp with Duncs on the top line, because I want to keep Vande and Watkins together. Trupp is also a very creative player that could certainly set-up Duncs for a bunch of right circle wristers. Gregoire was the POY in the USHL, lets see if those skills translate to the WCHA. Playing him with Trupp and Duncs should put him in the best position possible to succeed.

Vande and Watkins are the dynamic duo out there. The best forecheckers on the team. LEt's put the sniper with the rocket wrister on that line and see if they can convert the silly cycle into some opportunities for Andrew. Watkins speed, Vande in the corner, Kozek's release, Vande picking up any rebounds.

Davidson's size and hustle last year impressed me enough to put him on the checking line. Darcy just does what he's asked, and Martens showed good instincts and hard work last year. I actually really like this line. I think they can bust some ribs without screwing the pooch.

My third scoring line is full of potential. I like the fact that it is three guys with scoring touch who have yet to prove themselves. I look for any or all three of these guys to replace skaters on the top two lines throughout the season based on who's showing what at practice and in the games.

Defensive pairings, well I tried to match a puck mover with a body mover. Puck movers: Chay is going to need to do what he did last year and then some with Taylor gone. I like what I saw in Marto at the end of the year. Lapoint has yet to wow me, but I am giving him the benefit of the doubt from being concussed. Body Movers: Joe, well if seven figures isn't enough incentive to play up to his potential, I don't know what is. Jones is just a quiet rock back there. Blood and Fienhage both come in highly regarded. They could bump someone and both be playing in November.

I think Walski and Eidsness rotate until one plays poorly. I think Eidsness is eventually the guy.

This team has talent. I think it has leadership. I put letters on Duncs, Chay and Watty. This is going to b e fun to see how this group coheses.

I wouldn't be suprised if they kept Kozek and Duncan together from the end of last year. VV would be a great fit in the middle - he has improved every year and could be ready to be our #1 center.

It also wouldn't shock me if Trupp, Gregoire and Toews ended up on a line together - alot of energy there.

  3. sure wish he was in school right now. im gona say hes a 2 year player but could have been 3 if he came in this year if it was possible. either way he is gona be a hell of a player

... or 1 year. I've heard that some in his family are thinking that way.

  4. Remember Kevin Rappana and Jace Reed? That was a while ago. Anyone after that?

    How about Scott Sandelin?

There's plenty of Gopher tradition on the Range - even when the 'Dogs were good in the '80s it was still a struggle for them to win recruiting battles with UMTC.

  5. Agreed, but UND and our fan base are not nearly as patient as BC has been. If you're the head coach of ND, WI, DU, CC or MN, 14 years is a long time to coach without winning any hardware. Hak is nearly a third of the way through that timeline without hanging a banner. Hopefully he can get the monkey off his back in 09.

"...UND and our fan base are not nearly as patient as BC has been..."

Who is the last coach we have run off for not winning the big one?

Rube? That was 30 years ago.

We haven't had a BC/York "problem" since. (Gino moved on after some Woog-like losing seasons).

I predict Hak won't be here 14 years - he will move on/up before then - on his terms and not due to the "impatient fan base."

  6. What part of the statement do you not understand. The Xcel energy center is 7.8 miles away from the campus of the University of Minnesota.

So try again.:0 To suggest otherwise is disingenuous. Yeah you're a Sioux fan... :)

I think we Sioux fans need to grow up a little re: Xcel Energy Center = home ice for the Gophers

    1. It's the largest hockey venue between Chicago and Denver - why wouldn't they hold a regional there.

    2. Where do you see more Sioux fans when they play in the TC - Mariucci or the X? When the games are at the X, Sioux fans have a better opportunity to get tickets.

    3. There are probably more Sioux fans in the TC than any other metro area in the nation.

    4. It's an advantage for us to play on an NHL rink vs. an Olympic rink like Mariucci. We usually play well there.

Face it - the WCHA/NCAA will continue hold events in the Twin Cities. If so, it's better for us they use the X vs. the John. Get used to it.

  7. Woog was absolutely savaged by UND fans over the years because, although he made the FF more than 40% of the time, and he had a great winning record against UND, he could not win the big one. He recruited and coached multiple Hobey winners, and All-Americans, but over and over, UND fans dismissed him as a failure. UND fans did this, based, more or less, solely on the fact that his contemporary at UND, although he didn't win against the Gophers, and he did not have the number of Hobey's, etc, did in fact win some Championships.

All I can say is, if UND continues with it's Championship drought, all those harsh things said against Woog will also be true against Hak, and other team's fans, like me, will take a great amount of pleasure in pointing this out, probably not here, but on other forums. If in fact, god forbid, MN ever catches up in the number of NCAA Championships, the mocking of UND fans on some forums would become Biblical. Of course, Hak could go on and have a 3 peat, and shut me up, but until he does, he is a Woog without the charm.

Hak won't be a Woog untill he has a couple seasons like this:

    1997-1998 17-22-0 .436

    1998-1999 15-19-9 .453

  8. I agree. Believe me, I'm not out to slam hak. I feel very fortunate to have someone of hak's caliber coaching the Sioux. However, I believe that it is also the coaching staffs role to ensure that the team is totally vested before game time. It just seems to me that there is something missing - be it simple motivation, or having a fire in the belly. We know that they have the talent. It just totally kills me to see the Sioux get out played by an Eastern team. Obviously, I need to get a life to get so bent over this. Drop the damn puck already! ???

Yep - Eades is too soft, he was as a player too.

    Please think before you write.

  9. not sure that this is a profitable debate, but I think we shouldn't dismiss human nature that not many of us recall history beyond who won the championship. I am not sure of Coach Woog's won/loss record but we all know his lack of winning the big one. If Hak and Company don't change their ways I am fearful that history will treat them similarly. Admittedly, after four years it is premature to even discuss the same. They have the opportunity to change all that....lets hope they do!

    Here's Woog's record

    http://www.gopherhockeyhistory.com/coaches...s/woogStats.asp

2 losing seasons, recruiting philosophy, and cash in a hat finally got Woog fired.

What will get Hakstol fired is an empty building - any predictions?

Here's mine - Hakstol will leave for a better opportunity, not get fired.

  10. Well, I had thought about Nathan Lieuwen as the next UND goaltender after Walski leaves, but he played 3 games in the WHL before leaving for the BCHL, so he's a 2009 recruit who'd have to sit out until 2010. Sad really, because he just helped Team Canada win gold at the Hlinka tourney.

I also thought about Joe Howe of the USHL. However, he just committed to CC.

I think a lot depends upon this year. Our goaltending recruiting philosophy is a mystery, true. I have no idea who is good out there.

There is no mystery re: goaltending.

Again - my point is that is hard to have more than one highly rated goalie on campus. No high end goalie (or their NHL draft/family advisor/parents) wants to sit - they want to play. UMN was in a unique situation - they had no confidence in the veteren stud (Frazee) and they brought in Kangas knowing he would have to play if Frazee continued to unimpress.

Mike Lee wouldn't want to come here and sit for a year - he wants to play.

    No mystery.

  11. I'm not sure I understand the first part of your post. Are you saying UND has two stud goaltenders on their team? If so, I'd have to say that I can't agree with that right now.

I honestly don't know what we have in goal.

Walski is a hard worker, yes. A team player, yes. A goaltender who was brought in as a 3rd stringer and worked his way into position for playing time this year, yes. But is he a stud? Can't really say that. Some would argue no, because a stud goaltender would have more than 1.5 GP by his senior year. I can't tell you what Walski brings in game time situations against teams that would be tough like DU, CC, UW, UMN, or even SCSU.

Eidsness looks to be a top notch recruit. Even so, that has shown recently to be good only on paper. Bachman was a good recruit, no doubt, but he wasn't expected to be as good as he turned out to be his freshman year. On the other side of the coin, Frazee was supposed to come in his freshman year and be a stud goaltender thanks to countless stellar performances in juniors and internationally. It didn't happen.

Harrington is a complete unknown. He comes from a league I've never heard of (SIJHL) and I'm not sure how many of us have heard of. He's 20 or 21 as a freshman so he is more mature than Eidsness, though. Who knows with this guy.

Very up in the air if you ask me.

    QUOTE (Irish @ Aug 15 2008, 11:25 PM)

I think we have paid a high price to have Walski as a senior with one game under his belt on our roster. We lost a good young goalie and haven't recruited a stud until Eidsness. We are one injury away from disaster. Does anyone think that Walski can carry the load in the WCHA? If so why didn't he play last year. Why we haven't gone after another top goalie is a mystery. I hope it doesn't come back to bite us. Our goalie recruitment philosophy is a mystery. What do they see in Walski that others don't see. He is a hard working practice goalie in my book
