  1. Spin around all you want but all of you were DaveKs and Fetchs not that long ago. Yes I would say Hak et al flip-flopped like a fish that jumped out of the tank. It is not going to drag the unversity down, just the sports. Would that really be such a major loss? Look at Minnesota and their lousy sport teams, and scandals, and the university lives on.

When the nickname represents the sports teams and the only thing that will be drug down by keeping the nickname is the sports teams than I would say that its a major loss. They kind of go together.

Some were DaveKs and Fletchs not long ago but as the whole situation around the nickname has changed, opinions are allowed to change as well. Just like Hakstol, I don't think any of us want the name to go, but the costs of keeping it now outweigh the benefits. If the Big Sky drops UND, Minnesota and Wisconsin along with others stop scheduling, and top recruits stop signing, DaveK and Fletch get to go about their everyday business and lose nothing. Hakstol, Mussman and others will have to deal with it head on and will be the ones who get questioned on why their programs are suffering. I'll take the opinion of those with some skin in the game over those posting under false screen names and nothing to lose everytime.

  2. I think the NCAA probably made it pretty clear in their 15 minute meeting with Al Carlson and the boys that they weren't budging on their stance. The timeframe of the agreement had passed. Even if Al won't talk about the meeting now, everyone was in agreement when they came back on where the NCAA stood.

  3. I do realize that some made the effort early on. The masses didn't come until the deadline started to approach. I am aware that some here tried to talk some sense into others but it was falling on deaf ears because many here were still in fight mode.

Of course many were still in fight mode. We are proud of our athletic teams and very proud of the name. Did you think the name was just going to change without a fight? Do you think Bison fans would not let their emotions get in the way of their better judgement on an issue like this? I doubt it. I watched your fanbase spend two months writing newspaper articles, doing interviews and coming up with all types of conspiracy theories of why UND was voted into a poll. I can't imagine the emotion that would be shown on something such as the nickname.

  4. The NCAA has a pretty clear policy on Native American nicknames and nowhere does it say that an entire state will be punished because of one school. The whole thing is designed to punish schools that are not in compliance, not states.

Also the SC ban allows for any NCAA postseason game that was earned on merit to still take place in SC. Only predetermined tournaments(like NCAA basketball regionals) are banned. I really doubt the NCAA would be interested in placing the kind of sanctions on ND schools that have been talked about, specifically postseason games earned on merit.

I don't see the NCAA expanding the punishment to the entire state cause I don't think they want to drag anyone else into this. But as others have mentioned, when you have a school who is trying to retire the name and get off the list but isn't being allowed to do that by the state, maybe the entire state should fall under the same sanctions. Like I said though, I am not holding my breath that this happens nor do I want it to happen.

  5. But all I can say is - wow. I don't think you can comprehend the fury (or as Sam would say, "wrath") of NDSU alumni if they found out that the NCAA was barring any school in ND from hosting a NCAA playoff event as a result of a state-wide vote. There would be countless people litereally screaming with spit flying out of their mouths. It would be epic.

It will probably be about the same feeling as UND losing the opportunity to host a playoff event as a result of a state-wide vote.

  6. You're not very smart are you homer? I have never argued for keeping the name and in fact have been against the NCAA from the start. But I'm also not ready to obsolve UND of all blame like some of you posters like to do. It never should have gotten to point were "Carlson" could interfere and it should have been handled years ago. Wonder who dragged this thing out? UND fans! This whole thing has nothing to do with NDSU. It's self-infected for the most part. That's been my whole point since day one.

I've said UND has had opportunities to get rid of the name in the past and missed taking advantage of those. When Carlson introduced his law however UND was retiring the name. They were doing their part of the agreement with the NCAA, what more do you want. Are you saying everyone who voted for the state law in the legislature was a UND fan? Also, everyone who signed the petition to repeal the repeal was a UND fan? So not everyone who drug this out was a UND fan. I've stated many times that UND deserves their fare share of the blame but there is also plenty more to go around to some people who are none UND fans.

  7. Any Bison fan that would vote to keep the name is a fool. Actually, let me restate that......any North Dakotan that would vote to retain the nick name is a fool. The real nightmare for the entire system will come when the legislature meets and Al Carlson and his cronies start flexing their new found political power and hammer higher ed.

Wyo, you are correct on this and have been very consistent with this from the start. Carlson used this emotional issue as a cover for what he really wants and there are UND and NDSU fans alike that can't see through it. In my opinion the education in the next 3 months starts there, the conference affiliation and scheduling conflicts along with other sanctions are also very important.

Hopefully though when the Carlson's gang start flexing their muscle, guys like BisonDan and Johnson344 just "take it on the chin" like they recommend UND fans should have been willing to do when the retirement of the nickname began.

  8. NDSU fans whine now because they don't believe that NDSU gets fair funding. It will only get worse as Carlson gets more power over the Higher Education system.

All universities will get funding cut. NDSU's been asking for more money but I'm sure the will just "take it on the chin and quit whining" when Carlson gets power. If they only see what Carlson is doing as a nickname issue than so be it I guess.

  9. I'm kinda with Dan on this one. If UND hockeyfans/grads/whathaveyou had taken it on the chin and quit whining, UND wouldn't have been in this position because Al would not have seen an opportunity to grab some power.

If the vote passes and Al's plan to gain control of the university system continues I can't wait until NDSU funding gets cut even further. I hope your president and fans just "take it on the chin."

  10. You guys are missing the point - it never should have gotten to the SBoHE, so the legislature couldn't interfere. Yes dick head Al got the ball rolling but he had a lot of support by UND grads along the way. Remember the hockey people were fighting this all the way and if they would have accepted the change I highly doubt Al would have gotten involved.

I don't think there is an argument about earlier opportunities to remove the name the current UND leadership was following the agreement that was made with the NCAA and taking action to retire the name. Just like other institutions that a name change has taken place there was a lot of emotion regarding the change. Illinois, Miami or even Dickinson St. changed their names and there was a lot of emotion from alumni and fans were displeased at the time and fought the change. Carlson used this emotional as a pawn in his game to get University control back to the legislature so he can control funding. Him speaking out about his meeting with the NCAA would go a long way in truely letting the people of North Dakota know where the NCAA stands on this but he is not going to do that. He knows they won't budge but without the vote passing, his plan will not be able continue.

In my opinion, his may not be NDSU's issue now and I truely believe that there will also be NDSU fans who vote NO on the issue just to put it to rest. But if Carlson gets his way there will come a time that NDSU will be on the other side of the fence on an issue where Carlson and the legislature has power. It won't be a good feeling.

  11. Thanks for using NDSU as your measuring stick for success - There is no way in hell that NDSU uses UND for any measure of success in anything. Big difference between the two schools.

Your right, if this was similar UND fans would run down NDSU's success in wrestling (sport we don't have) and talk constantly about wishing your wrestling team fails, to try and make us feel better about our programs. But we'll save our time and just beat you on the court. Judging by your reaction those losses this season really stung didn't they?

And not to bring it up again but your players couldn't even leave UND out of their minds after they won the Nat'l championship. And on a day UND shouldn't even have been anywhere in discussion, it was brought up by players and fans to prove NDSU tries to compare themselves to UND anyway they can.

  12. 1200 less...with two teams who claim to be a big deal...playing in the state of hockey and home to one of the teams.... and about 4-5 hours from Grand Forks.

This post pretty much sums up how Bison fans let their emotions get the best of them and post with no intelligence about a sport they "don't care about." First of all, it doesn't matter if you like hockey or not, people who are hockey fans will tell you U of M and UND are a big deal when it comes to the sport. You trying to argue that shows your jealousy of a program that you know nothing about. Second, so there wasn't a sellout on a Sunday evening game that was nationally televised. Not everyone is going to take Monday off of work or make the drive after the game and get home at 2:00 in the morning. I guess after a season when UND beats both your volleyball team and your basketball team you'll can do whatever you have to do to try and make yourself feel better about your favorite college.

  13. I really liked them as well. Would like to see the other colors but the white ones were sharp and the picture that leaked definately did not do them justice.

  14. Spring prospectus/roster: https://www.nmnathle...DB_OEM_ID=13500

I'm excited spring ball is here. After looking at the roster and depth chart a couple thoughts:

    - this year its important to get a couple of the 2's to step up on the d-line. we lose some good seniors there and its an important position.

    - the o-line is set for the next few years. The coaches have done a great job building depth there and its no wonder we only brought in 1. Looking at that depth chart and it seems there are about 8 or 9 with starting experience.

    - safety will be a question mark this year. Wide open competition.

    - I'm really liking our skill guys on offense. A lot of talent and a lot of youth.

    - No listing for Belmore's replacement. Luke is listed as the WR coach which I'm sure has WR's and TE's.

  15. The FSU attire is "approved" by one tribe. Thus, they could not "punish" anyone for wearing it. Conceivably, they could put the Seminole head on a jersey and wear that and just go by "north dakota" pending some sort of arrangement with FSU. It's the voice of dissidence. Where else to get the matter on a national stage other than this weekend?

I bet FSU would jump right on this and give us permission. They are probably just waiting to see how they could get involved in this circus. Loaning us their emblem would be just their chance.

  16. You advocate that the student-athletes should see if they, the NCAA, are bluffing by wearing the Sioux logo, right?

If that's the case, they are destroying their chances to win an NCAA title.

Was that a "bang-splat" sound I just heard.

Actually, homer has been saying that it is time to move on. He was trying to make a point replying to Chewey. Chewey said that the team should wear Florida State t-shirts under their jerseys to see if the NCAA would do anything. homer said that if you really want to make a point you might just as well wear the regular jersey and force the NCAA to do something. But he wasn't really advocating that the team should do that.

This. Why would we promote another school during an event that they do not even participate in? Florida St. had nothing to do with the agreement the state of ND made with the NCAA. They crossed all their i's and dotted all their t's and the NCAA gave approval. The school, state and tribe were all on the same page from the start. Same can't be said about our past leadership at all three levels. Like I said, you might want to read it again.

  17. Absolutely.

Before they do that though, why don't you play Russian roulette and see if that gun is actually fully loaded?

Seems like you are more than willing to let some student-athletes destroy their dreams over your fantasy of keeping the Fighting Sioux sweaters on the hockey team forever, aren't you?

I think you should read that again. Not sure where you see anything of me wanting the student athletes to destroy anything.

  18. Yes. That's how stupid this whole thing is. If someone had any backbone for protest, that's exactly what would be done. They should get a bunch of FSU t-shirts and wear them under their gear and should all be in those t-shirts for interviews in between periods and after the games.

I wasn't aware FSU played hockey. If someone had the backbone they would wear the current UND jersey and see if the NCAA is bluffing. FSU went through the required steps and had immediate approval from their state's Seminole tribe and their state gov't immediately challenged the NCAAwhen the sanction list came out. UND did not. Wearing an FSU shirt wouldn't change that.

  19. according to sagarin

    158 North Dakota State = 73.75 16 13 70.75( 238) 0 0 | 0 0 | 72.64 171 | 73.92 153

    265 North Dakota = 66.31 13 14 67.59( 326) 0 2 | 0 2 | 67.34 253 | 65.92 269

NDSU won more games against better competition, aka the better team and better season. NDSU actually won 4 more games than UND, but for whatever reason the bracketbuster game doesn't show on sagarins calculations.

one game means jack against an entire season, and you have to be brain dead to think otherwise.

UND MBB showed alot of improvement this year, and beat two tourney teams, and a decent NDSU team.

No matter how many excuses you try and come up with.........59>54

  20. Ummm going against the rights of native americans who want the name to stay as they feel its an honor. Ignoring them. And not obeying what the overall population wants. Is that enough?

The tribes had an opportunity a few years ago to speak up and be heard about how honored they were by the name. They chose not to and the timeframe for the agreement past. The NCAA is following an agreement that was in place.
