  1. Barnstormers would have been a decent name as a replacement for the Flickertails in the 30's. But now its seems like a dated name. Although Des Moines' arena football team uses the name: If Nebraska originally had the nickname Arapaho or Comanche and had to change it now, doubt they would choose Cornhusker.
  2. With all due respect to Coach Lennon, this just wasn't his year.
  3. Brackins must have been injured, as he hardly played. Looks like Rainy River football had its share of issues.
  4. Probably .... Detroit Lakes
  5. Good Lord. How old of a buzzard are you? No wonder you're so crotchety.
  6. If a stadium of this type magnitude is even in the realm of consideration, neither the Fighting Sioux Club, nor the city of GF, nor the state of ND, and certainly not the students will be shelling out the $'s to build it. Only some very deep-deep pocketed alumni could possibly be dreaming this big: IA football. Whether there is any actual follow through, it would only be natural to be skeptical. To build stadiums and facilities and pay coaches at the IA level takes a huge financial investment and risk. Troy Univ (Alabama) was able to become a respectable IA football school largely because of the owners of the Movie Gallery chain. Boise St had a number of deep-pocketed backers that had high IA vision thirty years ago. Both those schools knew the fan-base wasn
  7. Old Memorial Stadium and the Hyslop complex are behind the large video screen. The seating appears to be removed from old Memorial and replaced with catwalks to walk from between the north and south sides of the bowl.
  8. This is what $285 Mill is buying for the Gophers 50,000 seat stadium: The pitch of the UND rendering is seems steeper, and the seating not as expansive in the upper deck. Perhaps it is 35,000 seats --> maybe $150 Mill ?
  9. Brandon Hirneise (Scottsdale, AZ) Wisconsin Sports FB/LB Tyrell Rosemeyer (6-0, 222), Sr., An honorable-mention all-state and Conference Defensive Player of the Year selection as a junior, Tyrell Rosemeyer was expected to be one of the state's top players th
  10. If you build a stadium for 25K and later want to expand it, the later expansion should be part of the preliminary drawings. It's interesting to note that the turrets of Memorial Stadium remain standing and are dwarfed by the new stadium. Also, aren't almost all football stadiums north-south in orientation?
  11. There had been talk at NDSU, partially fueled by both Taylor and Bohl, that NDSU might get an exemption from the NCAA to play in a minor FBS bowl. Earlier, there was a chance that there wouldn't be enough bowl eligible IA teams to fill all the bowl slots, but it appears there will be available IA teams now.
  12. A former Sioux moving up the coaching ranks: Jamie Skadeland promoted to Colo Mines head volleyball coach

  14. With gamblers making up a huge fraction of Nevada's consumption and Bostonians buying lower tax alcohol in NH, it's probably safe to say ND is actually #1 in citizen consumption.
  15. Currently, its difficult to get good math and science teachers in almost any school district. On the reservation, its nearly impossible to get these teachers and to retain them. Indian students from most reservations underacheive on the match and science portions of the ACT. Again, the issue goes back to the culture of reservations and the lack of emphasis on education.
  16. History says otherwise. When the Fighting Sioux first became an issue in the late 60's, as an institutional response, emphasis was placed on NA programs to become more sensitive to tribal needs. USD, SDSU, and especially NDSU had far fewer institutional incentives to add NA programs, so very few programs were ever added.
  17. Volleyball is also a sport that in which West Coast teams (not only the WCC and Big West, but even DII and NAIA) generally are very strong relative to much weaker Northeastern DI leagues, much like most DII southern baseball leagues are stronger than mid-major northern DI baseball conferences. In other words, relative to basketball, the DI vs DII label has very high overlap.
  18. Pony1976: Any idea who might be the high-powered recruits that UND is rumored to be bringing in?
  19. The other moral: the Summit Conference sucks at volleyball. For the three "new" schools to become dominant powers gives one an idea of weak the Summit was. Whoever wins the tournament will likely be a 15th or 16th seed. Massey Ratings for volleyball (yeah, I know every detests Massey Ratings, but the BCS uses it) actually rates the NCC higher than the Summit. In fact, four NCC schools are ranked higher than NDSU: Team W L Rating (rank) Power (rank) MN Duluth 19 1 1.678 (50) 4.93 (61) Conc SP 19 2 1.392 (93) 4.13 (115) S Dak St 15 6 1.311 (117) 3.98 (126) MN Mank 15 3 1.267 (135) 3.86 (140) Augustana 15 6 1.229 (144) 3.65 (161) South Dak 17 4 1.178 (155) 3.50 (171) N Dak St 13 5 1.132 (169) 3.49 (172) Oral Rob 10 8 1.124 (174) 3.65 (160) IUPFW 11 8 1.107 (175) 3.40 (185) .... No Dak 5 13 0.402 (445) 1.52 (270) That being said, with NDSU's coach (who seems to be top-line coach) and recent recruiting classes (especially the Lopez sisters), NDSU has a chance to be a legitimate top 50-60 DI team, IMHO. OTOH, UND has got a whole lot of work to do.
  20. While UND's volleyball program looks to be struggling when its joins DI, NDSU has really turned around a rather disastrous W/L situation of two years ago when their coach resigned. With the recruits they have coming in, NDSU will have the potential to make some noise as a DI mid-major.
  21. Volleyball picks up a Stroup from Fargo
  22. There was, IMHO, an extraordinary article in yesterday's WSJ that laments the fact that emotional hatred is now viewed as a virtue among many academics. Regardless of your political affiliation, substitute Clinton, or Bush, or the Fighting Sioux nickname, or nickname opponents, or Engelstad, for the ***, and see where you stand.
  23. MSU-Moorhead/NDSU/Concordia students that take coursework at more than one school. A student at MSU-Moorhead, for instance, can take courses at NDSU or Concordia.
