Ok. First of all...we are not (yet) called the "Dakotans." This is a theoretical scenario. If UND wanted to become the "Dakotans" then use the same argument as the U of I and state that it is named after the school newspaper..."The Dakota Student". If we wanted to become the "Fighting Dakotans" then state the former plus a tribute to North "Dakotan" soldiers killed in OIF and OEF. I don't see why this theoretical scenario is so different than that of the U of I. If UND must change its nickname I am certain that the new nickname will be as benign as possible to avoid having to fight the same battle in the future. READ: CRIMSON RIVERCATS BTW...I decline remediation.

Exactly...Dakotans would have nothing to do with the Dakota tribe and everything to do with the state name. Just like the University of Illinois.

If you look at Montana, New Hampshire and Maine...it states the same "no DI or NFL teams." BTW...it is recent. The article was found on the ESPN College Football front page...today.

Cal-Poly was within 1 point of beating the #2 team in the county at the time in Montana? Ok... UND beat the #3 team in the country at the time in UNI. BTW...why would I ask Cal-Poly? They did not play UND. The only common opponent this season was UNI...therefore they are in a better position than anyone to comment on the "for real"-ness of UND and/or SDSU. HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

We will never know. However, you could ask UNI which team(s) seemed "for real". Merry Christmas!
