  1. 7-0 Sioux, 10-yard run by Beatty
  2. 0-0, end of 1st. Sioux moving the ball and knocking on the door to the end zone, thanks to a pass interference penalty.
  3. Sioux interception to stop WCU impressive drive.
  4. At the World Jr. Kessel showed great flash as a one-on-one player against the not so good Swedish defensemen. Other than that, he had a real tendency to disappear (hmmm, that sounds like an Austrian situation). Stafford was a horse throughout the tournament, both scoring and creating chances for his linemates in all of the games. Kessel is going to have to greatly improve a number of areas of his game as he is very one-dimensional from what I have seen.
  5. Thanks for creating a mental picture that I really did not need.
  6. Wow!! I never could have imagined the tone of this letter. I fully expected a "politically correct" letter that was soft and mushy, ineffectually taking the NCAA to task. This was the "in your face" type of letter that we all wanted, but the niceties of the situation would have watered down. Dr. K. must read this board for ideas. Good questions, to the point, and on the mark.
  7. Oh, real classy (NOT!!) - You just provided a perfect example of why Native Americans feel discriminated against on campus and feel insulted by nicknames.
  8. Think a little broader than "payola." One of the functions of UND and NDSU is to assit in economic development for the State of North Dakota. The two campuses are much more than just plain vanilla educational institutions. Part of their charge is to assist economic development within the state. Doing a joint licensing effort with the tribes could be just a small part of the total picture for tribes. Successful people and businesses do the most with what they have available to them. The Sioux may decide that their name is one of their assets, and if that can be leveraged to their benefit without impinging on their heritage or tradition, they should go for it. Sioux manufacturing is a successful tribal asset, and an example of what can be done. Like it or not, native tribes do have some economic and tax advantages in the federal laws to assist them in acquiring contracts in a variety of areas. The problem is usually getting enough momentum, and cash, to get to the point where you are able to achieve things. The licensing aspect could be just the first step, to create the funds necessary to do much grander things. It would be good for UND to be involved with that. The tribes are in ND, and improvements in their economic status would be beneficial to all of ND. I view it in a different light than just payola, and an opportunity for UND, the tribes, and alumni.
  9. I see an opportunity here that I can't believe some marketing student hasn't jumped on. I think that the Sioux tribes should get together themselves and with the UND hierarchy to consider the following: The "official" Sioux tribes should certainly be able to put together a package that involves licensing the right to use "Sioux" by UND. The license would involve an annual payment to the Sioux tribes, as well as a percentage of all revenues received from the sale of merchandise with an official Sioux logo on it. The tribes would be involved in the approval of any logos, which would be trademarked. Any non-UND sales of Sioux items with the logo would have to be licensed (such as Home of Economy, Scheels, etc.). With the revenues received, the tribes can do any number of things to support their nations such as college scholarships, economic development, affordable housing, etc. They would be able to ensure that logos, emblems, etc. are not displayed, assembled, or used in a many that they consider demeaning or derogatory. Everybody wins, except of course the NCAA monarchists. The tribes receive economic benefit, use of the Sioux name and logos has tribal approval, UND fans and alumni are happy. The only other possible unhappy individuals are those that truly feel such an arrangement is still demeaning to them. Based on comments that I have heard and seen, Sioux fans should surely be willing to cough up a few more bucks to maintain the UND history and name. I can certainly see some merit in an effort to remove the word "Fighting" from the name. Even though I believe it is out of respect for the courage and resourcefulness of Sioux Warriors, others view it as labeling the Sioux as a nation that lived on war and fighting. I think that the idea of a mandatory class for everyone (not just ticketholders) deserves some consideration. Simply have it count as part of the humanities requirement. Then there isn't any additional cost to anyone, and the native heritage of ND is spread. Is this too wacky of a concept?
  10. Picked up word this morning that Tysen Dowzak will be playing for Lincoln next year. He is only a few credits short of high school graduation, so he can play for Lincoln and pick those up there.
  11. Right on with that. There are a number of Fergus Falls cars (mine included) with season ticketholders that I see headed up to REA for Sioux games. And the local paper reports almost as much on the Sioux as the Gophers for hockey. One of my biggest chuckles a few months ago was when a telemarketer called to offer me a Gopher credit card. Just couldn't understand how someone living in MN could not root for the Gophers. He did admit that I was not the only one to turn it down. Following our very interesting discussion, I am only slightly optimistic that he has a much broader perspective on the world than rodentitis. I started this thread, but haven't been able to get an update on the visit. My little birdie was on the road this weekend, but when he gets back I will see if he can find out how the visit went.
  12. Is it possible that they can hire a coach just by considering inside candidates? By bringing in Motzko first as an assistant, he would already be in-house and they maybe can then shortcut the process. Pure speculation on my part since I don't know the rules they have to follow. That conspiracy theory does seem to answer the question as to why Motzko would leave an assistant position at a pseudo-successful program to take an assistant position at a not so successful program. Going from UM to SCSU does not strike me as a positive move unless there is something else going on. It would also serve as a means to provide an easier transition from Dahl to the new coach, if it is Motzko.
  13. A little birdie just informed me that Tysen Dowzak is visiting UND tomorrow (Friday May 27). Can't disclose exactly how this info came about, to protect the guilty, but that is the word. Here's hoping for a positive visit and another large defenseman headed to the Sioux in a year or two.
  14. Sid Hartman reports in his column in the Star Tribune that Craig Dahl will retire in the near future (near future is not defined) and that Bob Motzko, current gopher assistant, will take over. Motzko is to be named an assistant at SCSU and then take over at Dahl's retirement. See page 2 of the article at: http://www.startribune.com/stories/510/5423985-2.html
  15. Haven't seen it commented on directly yet, so I will throw it out there. I will agree that the money played a major part in Brady's decision. But is it just possible that the shoulder injury and the state of officiating (or lack thereof) in the WCHA played some part in the decision? The European game is a more wide open skating style. I have to believe that the Bina injury, the abuse that Zach Parise went through, Brady's shoulder injury and the potential for further injury had to play a part. With his speed and skill, Brady should shine in Switzerland, and likely with a smaller chance of career ending injury. The WCHA simply has to get its officiating act together or it will be a part of any top caliber players decision process.
  16. Sorry about that. A premature twitch sent the quote out before I had responded. Minot and Grand Forks AFB are not defensive bases. They are offensive bases. At one point in time Minot had the 5th Fighter Interceptor Squadron (my outfit). It was deactivated many years ago. That left the two bases with missles and bombers. Both of these weapon systems are offensive or retaliatory in nature. They don't defend. They are considered a deterrent to an attack, not a defense when an attack is on the way. Many of the older missle systems have been deactivated. The strength of Minot and Grand Forks was the over the pole route to the USSR. Now that the USSR is broken up and not seen as such a threat, it may be that the role of these bases is seen differently. There is also the issue of the tanker wings. To some extent it is logical to have tankers with the bombers, but in reality the tankers could rendezvous with the bombers somewhere in mid-mission and not have to tag along. From what I have seen, the role of the tankers in refueling has moved far from the two bases. That places an additional risk of having those wings move. Those are the weak points of the two bases. On the flip side, there used to be a whole string of bomber bases along the northern frontier, KI Sawyer in MI, Ellsworth at Rapid City, Malmstrom in Montana, and I believe one in WY. Again, the polar route and the missles were the reason for all of these. Maybe the two ND bases will be left in place as the last remnant of this deterrent force.
  17. I would find it hard to believe that anyone who has had a reasonable amount of experience in filling open positions could criticize the selection. First and foremost, before anyone is talked to, it would have to be documented to/by/for the selection committee as to what the goal is in hiring a new AD. What type of sports experience? What type of education? What type of fundraising experience? What type of management experience? What type of project management experience? The list goes on and on. And then you have to decide what the most important items are in filling the position. Then you review the candidates. By the time they got to bringing in the individuals that they wanted to interview, they would have done some preliminary screening on paper, and by telephone. I would think that they would have checked some references. By this point, you should not have what could be considered any bad candidates. Each candidate will bring strengths and weaknesses. I would guess that after interviewing the first three candidates they had identified some possible weak areas or areas of lack of experience in each of them, or took a second look at some applicants to see if there were other possibilities. You then take a step back to look if there might be something a little better in the pile. From my perspective, I have no personal knowledge of any of these individuals. I can only go by what I have read. I find no fault in the choice for AD. He looks to have a very impressive background and valuable experience in many areas. Furthermore, he may have the backbone to stand up to some unpleasant situations. For those of us with military experience, if you get on the wrong side of someone who outranks you, life can become miserable. I would guess that he likely had some concerns about someone getting upset at his applying for the position. His next post could have come quite quickly at some remote spot no one ever heard of before. It is totally unfair to be doing sniping or attacking the process unless you have very very intimate detail on what took place in the interviews and what the goals of the search were. If you do please point them out. No guess, no speculation, only what you know to be fact. Some people will always look for conspiracies or other ulterior motives, but we need facts to assess the situation. Let's give the guy a chance to prove himself in action.
  18. Proposed downtown Events Center went down 29% - 71%. High voter turnout with negative vote pretty unanimous across the city, even in the NDSU area.
  19. Does anyone know if the REA has anyone on staff that either is of Native American ancestry, or someone who is well educated on Native American language, culture, heritage, etc. to prevent any accidental faux pas? I think that it would be a good idea to have that as well as provide all REA employees with some indoctrination in that area so that they are prepared to notice or identify any situations that would be disrespectful to Native Americans. Being proactive is far better than reactive after the fact. I also think that it would be a good idea to consider roping off the Sioux logos inside the entrances so that they are not walked upon. I do know that some cultures consider even having the bottom of a foot pointed in your direction as an insult. I could certainly see that Native Americans might consider walking on the logo as disrespectful to their culture. And let's not get into a debate about sacred eagle feathers and the fact that these are only pictures of feathers, etc. etc. etc. Even if it isn't considered disrespectful by Native Americans, I take great pride in the Sioux logo. I would prefer not to have people walking on it with wet or dirty shoes. It is the same feeling that I would get if I ever saw someone checking their oil with an old Sioux jersey. Not good. Roping off the logos would also protect them from wear so that the emblems don't fade or look worn with time.
  20. Amen to that. That was their opportunity and they blew it. Even Bemidji State is outdoing NDSU in national sports coverage with making the NCAA playoffs and giving Denver a challenge. With the effort to try to go D1 in sports (DII+ in football), there won't be any money to do anything with hockey for decades.
  21. They do roam free in Teddy Roosevelt Park. Just ask the idiot who honked at one standing one the road. Final score: Buffalo 1, car 0. Drivers pants: not worth washing. Growing up in west central ND, I take the buffalo (Note: not a bison)
  22. I just heard last night that the people sitting next to me may not want to renew their tickets for the coming year. I may be able to put you in touch with them and you could work out a deal with them where they would renew and you buy the tickets from them.
