  1. I happen to work for a company that does quite a bit of work with the tribes in ND and MN. We have several employees who work indepth with tribal owned companies and tribal individuals. There is one facet of the current Native American culture on the reservations that just astounds us. We see and talk with the individuals that we deal with, and we have hired several Native Americans to work for the company, and we consistently get the same story. That story is that if a tribal member tries to improve themselves and their situation, they get pulled back down by other tribal members. We have seen it to such a degree, that it is the topic of discussion at some of our meetings on working with the tribes. It negatively affects the individuals and the tribal companies who are there to provide jobs and improve the life of tribal members. I and my company would certainly appreciate any insight or information you could provide on this phenomenon. We spend millions of dollars annually on economic development programs, which are available to all entities that we work with, including the tribal communities and companies. This attitude has held us back numerous times in trying to get things accomplished and moving forward. The end result is that a lot of resources are wasted in trying to overcome issues and situations that simply should not exist. It is not any official policy or action by the tribes, but involves the attitudes and behavior of individual tribal members. Very frustrating to us, and clearly a roadblock to improving things on the reservation. Any help or insight out there? Mako, KTF, GK, please??
  2. An absolutely tasteless post and very disturbing to those who suffer from gastrointestinal medical problems.
  3. Here is a link for stats. http://www.iihf.com/Hydra/Tournaments_06/o...x.jsp@compId=55 Lee and Chorney are tied with Butler, Bourque, and Kessel for the lead at +3.
  4. This is beginning to sound like the Mark Taylor - Doug Smail shorthanded connection.
  5. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL!!! STAFFORD WITH A SHORTIE!
  6. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!! Oshie is a catch.
  7. Gee, just last Saturday night on the shuttle bus to the arena I sat behind two Native American women (appeared to be in their 20's) who were fully decked out in Sioux jerseys, with the logo. They did not appear to be intimidated, no one accosted them or called them names, and they just appeared to be enjoying themselves. I didn't even see them looking around thinking someone was going to be hostile and abusive to them. Of course, I did not think to check their tribal ID's to find out if they were reservation registered Sioux tribal members. But it appears obvious from GK's remarks that these two women were totally clueless, stupid, and not worthy of being tribal members.
  8. 2-0 WI over MN. Gophers D let WI walk to the front of the goal again. Sounds like Badgers are dominating.
  9. Toews SSSSSCCCCOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSS
  10. Watched it for a while, but the feed doesn't have any audio. They were just playing "Prairie Home Companion" during the game. Looked like you could have walked in, bought a ticket, and sat at the glass. Pretty empty. I finally killed the video feed and jumped to the radio feed.
  11. Stafford has both. First one short-handed.
  12. Absolutely!! Green always on top. Go SIOUX!
  13. I believe that Karl is skating with the U.S. team over in Europe. Unfortunately he got bombed pretty hard the other night and the announcers were not too kind about his play. Here is a link to a recent story. See the right hand side of the page. http://proxy.espn.go.com/keyword/searchRes...spn&CMP=IL20269
  14. Eddie Balfour is now tied for #2 on the all-time win list (447) in the NHL behind Patrick Roy (551 wins). Way to go Eddie! He is looking pretty good for a 40-year old. It's a long way to #1, but who knows? http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/recap;_ylt=Aso...5112826&prov=ap
  15. Al Pearson is looking for some more people to go on the bus to Houghton. He has about 23 and he says he needs at least 25 to go. Right now, with 25 people going its about $150 for the bus ride/ticket to the game/beer on the bus. Then hotels/food are extra. If more people go, then it will be less for everyone. He said everyone who has gone has absolutely loved the trip and says you won't be disappointed.

The thing that struck me the most in last Saturday's game was that the Sioux could not run the ball. And that came down to execution from a team perspective. The offense thus became very one-dimensional and bogged down. I couldn't tell if it was the 3-4 defense of UNO that was giving problems or that the blocking just was not lining up the blocks. Without a running game, that put pressure on every other phase of the game. Without being able to gain more than 2.5 yards a carry, the passing game became obvious and made it easier for UNO to focus on a few passing routes. The bubble screen, even though passes were completed, was shut down and there were literally no YAC. Yes there were turnovers. But the fact is that in the second half the offense was not able to move the ball effectively to keep the Sioux defense off the field for a rest. I haven't seen the time of possession for the second half, but I believe that it was strongly in favor of UNO. Running the football is essential at this level, and is a team effort. It just did not happen against UNO.

Speaking of which, one has to question Gwozdecky's intelligence. Putting Paukovich on the ice in the last two minutes of a 7-2 game was the ultimate in dumb moves. It is like trying to incite something to happen, which it almost did. Even if you were short forwards, put someone else out there the last couple of shifts to avoid trouble.
  19. It simply isn't possible to compare the two buildings. The old REA was concrete and steel. Great material for getting sound to reverberate and grow. There is nothing there to absorb the sound and deaden it. In the new REA, there are sound absorbing panels in the ceiling around the edge. We have nice soft chairs, very little bare concrete or other hard surfaces with which to reflect sound. The new REA will never ever have the sound of the old REA, even if all seats were filled with screaming students. Having said that, it sure is possible to improve on what is there for fan involvement and enthusiasm in the new REA. And I would whole-heartedly support clever chants over profane chants. Maybe we need to start a creativity movement on ss.com to develop some new ones, say pseudo-cheerleader board.
  20. After watching TJ Oshie play, he reminds me of another Sioux player with similar yet slightly different skills, TZ (Travis Zajac). They both exihibit excellent puck skills, corner skills, passing skills, shooting skills, and great all around playmaking ability. I do believe that TJ Oshie plays just a bit more physical. If his linemates do some decent scoring during the entire season, he has the potential to upstage Mr. All-Media in the Twin Cities for WCHA Rookie of the Year. And that would be the icing on the cake!!
  21. Nothing of consequence in these comments. Just nice safe coach-speak that won't rile up the opponent or cause any type of controversy. Speak nice of your opponent and your own team, then get the heck out of there. Classic Head Coach Media Relations 101
  22. My first chance to see the Sioux and all the freshman in person tonight. Impressive group of freshman. Lee looked like a veteran on defense. The defense kept its cool and was really sweeping the puck away from the front of the net most of the time before Denver could get another chance. A few mishandles on pucks during the game, but I think they were notable mostly because I was used to seeing none of that by the end of last year. Toews goal was an incredible wrist shot. Quick shot, pinpoint, and hard. Impressive. Oshie must really be solid, because he made his presence known and has no fear. And all night long when the opportunities were there, the Sioux were crashing the net, including the D. There were a couple of times that I thought the D played too cautious and could have stepped up to grab loose pucks, but that should come. JPar, what can you say? He looks so quick, so confident, and is solid. The only goal Denver got JPar was screened by his own player. Stafford and Zajac were, well, Stafford and Zajac. Porter appears to really have stepped up his game. And it was great to see Prpich get under the Denver skin, and then just stand there and laugh, ignoring the chance to take a cheap shot. The team had a flat second period, as they have other games. Need to fix that, and be more consistent. Took too many penalties that nullified power plays, but I don't think as many of those as previous games. UND-UNO football game tomorrow afternoon, followed by hockey tomorrow night. What a weekend.
  23. How ironic. GK slams everyone for his view of their lack of knowledge of Native Americans, and then slams those non-Native Americans who have learned a tribal language and those trying to learn, because they aren't Native American. Reminds me of my drill sergeant in basic. SSgt. Mayfield could phrase a question so that you were damned whether you said yes or no. Come to think about it, SSgt Mayfield was far more enlightening than GK.
