FSU has always had a good relationship with the Seminole tribe. That is why the tribal leaders stepped up right away to support FSU. FSU didn't have to go and convince the tribal leaders That also happened with several other tribes. UND didn't have that support from any of the tribes in 2005. Many of us expect the NCAA to extend the policy to all Native American names and imagery at some point in the future. They could possibly go even further. The exceptions were put in place to help the process along. You don't need to remind the NCAA of anything, they are very aware of what is going on and what their eventual goals are. But if you want to waste your time, go ahead and send your comments to the NCAA. The comments probably won't have much effect, unless they get enough backing to push up the timetable on the next step. Your anger at FSU fans is misplaced. They are doing what is allowed by the school, and even encouraged by the school. If no one tells them that it is wrong, and why it is wrong, how would they know. Go ahead and be mad at the NCAA, it's their policy. Be mad at the FSU administration for allowing the antics. The fans are just supporting their school in the way they always have, just like UND fans would like to do.

My impression is that they were talking about all the lit outside signage, which would include the logos. Overall this is good news. The cost for replacing the signage will be much less than the original changes demanded by the NCAA. And it opens the building for hosting NCAA events again. Much better than some of the potential outcomes.

Those things may not have happened at the hockey party. But the attitude toward alcohol has changed. When most of us were younger we drank to have fun and to party. We didn't have a goal of getting bombed and passing out. The fact that they were so drunk they passed out at 8 PM, and the fact that their teammates left them to pass out, are both at least a little disturbing.

It will be on TV in the region, but Fox College Sports didn't pick up the UND football games this year. You will have to catch it on Big Sky TV.

CBS Sports Network releases 2012 college hockey schedule

How do you know I'm not screaming at my computer? It just might not be for the same reasons. -
Maybe if you or someone in your family, like maybe your teenage son, ended up in the hospital with alcohol poisoning you might be a little more concerned. Or maybe you wouldn't.

The difference between a situation like this where an individual is passed out, and an injury where the person is awake and alert, is that the person that is passed out can't tell you where or how much it hurts. It is almost impossible to know whether the problem is actually life threatening without medical personnel. Alcohol poisoning can be life threatening. Just because you saw similar things doesn't mean that the people you saw weren't in danger. I haven't really seen people saying that this is "the worst thing ever" or "the sign of the end of decent youth forever". Those seem to be hyperbole that you've thrown in. But binge drinking and alcohol are problems for many college students and it is important that the hockey program address this issue.

I said right in my post that I would deduct more for a loss to a weak team than I would for a loss to a strong team. But so far UNI has had few points deducted even for 3 losses. That approach ends up giving too much leeway to teams that are highly ranked early in the season. They can stay too high in the polls if they prove to be weaker than people originally thought. As someone else said, UNI cold lose this week and would still be top 20 with a 1-4 record. That doesn't make much sense no matter who they lost to.
-
The RA called 911. When 911 is called they send the police, paramedics and fire department for every call. Even for less serious emergencies they send all 3 departments. The first emergency responder appears to be the UND police officer. She knew that paramedics were on the way, so my guess is that she called a responsible UND official. For a UND athlete that would probably be a coach or the athletic director. For a non-athlete in the dorm they probably have another staff person designated. If this had happened off campus, and a city police officer had responded, their first call would have probably gone to whatever emergency contact the individual had listed.

I was happier with the performance of the team during the loss to SDSU than to USF. But both were losses and if voting in a poll would regard them both as losses. For me, I would deduct more for a loss to a bad team than a loss to a better team. But there should be a penalty in a poll for losing no matter how good the opponent. Otherwise the top teams at the beginning of the year become very hard to knock down even if they lose some games. And polls at the beginning of the year are usually not very reflective of how all ranked teams will perform during the year. I find it interesting to compare Bison fans with attitudes shown on Bville. Sometimes you follow along with the herd, sometimes you deviate. It's refreshing to know that not all Bison fans completely follow the party line.

The NCAA wouldn't have a problem with Dakotans as long as no Native American imagery was used. That is why the Fighting Illini is still allowed, the name was originally to represent Illinois residents that fought in World War I and the NCAA allows Illinois to use the name because it represents residents of the state. Dakotans and probably even Fighting Dakotans would be allowable under the NCAA policy.
-
I believe that Bville would classify the 2 FBS games as "moral victories". Bville really seems to be hung up on moral victories. But now you're giving UNI real credit for performing well in those games. I don't put much stock in polls, especially any polls done before the middle of the season. But polls should be based on actual performance, not perceived strength of the teams.

Normally Hak would handle the minors with internal punishment. But if he is trying to really make a point with this team, especially with this situation, he may give additional punishment this time. That is even more true if he gave them a warning before the party. But only time will tell whether he will do more or not.

CBS Sports Network releases 2012 college hockey schedule
82SiouxGuy replied to nodak651's topic in Men's Hockey
Multiple WCHA schools have TV contracts in place that make their games available on sports networks available all over the country. I would guess that 1 or more of them would have a problem with the WCHA putting games, especially their games, on a national outlet. CBS Sports has no relationship with the WCHA. They have relationships with other schools and conferences. They have a contract with the NCHC for next year. But that has nothing to do with the WCHA, which is where UND will be playing this year. This thread is much ado about nothing. This isn't some big conspiracy. It is all about contracts. The WCHA doesn't have a national contract at least in part because several of the top schools already have a TV contract in place. It isn't often that you can have both available nationally. UND hockey games will be seen on Fox College Sports again this year. Minnesota, Denver and other games will also be available on sports networks. Enjoy all of the games that will be on TV. -
The general public isn't going to support cutting the oil extraction tax because of something like this. The general public doesn't connect his name with oil, they think of names like BP or Mobil. This is about helping get more qualified employees for the oil fields. That is worth a lot more money than cutting the oil extraction tax. As Mr. Hamm stated, he believes that they are only able to extract 2.5-3% of the oil that is actually there. Just doubling that amount would be worth a lot more than cutting a few percent off the oil extraction tax. If just 1 of these students figures out how to increase the amount of oil they can extract from the current wells Mr. Hamm could make this money back many times over. It is a wise investment for him and a great gift for UND.

That is the correct terminology. A student is a freshman for their entire first year. If they are being redshirted, the redshirt can be pulled at any time during the year. So they are considered true freshman. Second year students are sophomores in class, but are redshirt freshman if they were redshirted for their first year.

That's what the Governor said at the announcement.

I think that most fundraisers would disagree with you. You start a major campaign by quietly working with potential large donors to find a good match. When enough large donations have been received, you go public with a lot of celebration and hype in order to help attract the remainder of the donations to finish the project. Ralph's gift was unique in many ways. As it relates to this discussion, there was no need for further fundraising. Ralph was funding the entire project. The other thing about Ralph's announcement is that it was done in his style. Fundraisers will often try to match the donor's style to make them feel as comfortable as possible. Ralph himself wasn't glittery or fancy, in spite of his years in Las Vegas. He liked the low key and making the announcement at the Old Ralph was exactly the way he wanted it. Most fundraising announcements for projects like the Spirit campaign would have been handled in a similar manner to what UND did.
-
Think of it as seed money. They aren't building a new building right away. This is how fundraising usually works. They work behind the scenes to start. They get a major donation and make an announcement. Then they start filling in some smaller donations that are attracted by the major donation. It rarely comes all at one time. Getting $14 million to start should be enough to guarantee the project. A lot of major projects are announced when they have somewhere between 50-80% of the funding or donations in place. I wouldn't be surprised if there are more oil industry donations in the works, but they may not be finalized yet. You make the announcements individually to give donors their time in the sun, you don't wait until you have all the money before you announce the project.

POLL: Should UND-NDSU Resume the Football Series?
82SiouxGuy replied to ShilohSioux's topic in Football
It is on the Community Forum. $10 million in donations and $4 million from the state of North Dakota oil and gas research fund. -
What exactly qualifies as a major announcement to you? Most schools on the planet would consider a $10 million donation a major announcement.
-
Mr. Hamm has made a few donations in North Dakota during recent years. I'm sure that part of the reason is to say thank you to the state for the money he has made here, and the money that he will continue to make. And another reason is to build a supply of the specialized employees that he knows will be needed in the future in Western North Dakota. A wise business man invests in helping build an educated work force for his future needs.
-
I concur. The donations are very generous and very much appreciated.
-
The report in the Forum says that it is $5 million from Mr. Hamm, $5 million from Continental Resources and they are asking the state for $4 million from an oil and gas research fund.

And several of us think that you aren't making a big enough deal of this. Consumption of alcohol patterns have changed since you were in college. As someone mentioned, the goal for a lot of students now is to pass out, not just to drink and have fun. Binge drinking has become a bigger problem in college and for the general public in a lot of places. People are more apt to make bad decisions when under the influence of alcohol. Educating people about the dangers and teaching lessons are ways to fight that problem.
