SIOUX Recruits - 2008-09 Updates, Monitoring Their Junior League Play
82SiouxGuy replied to AZSIOUX's topic in Men's Hockey
The United States is going to follow the lead of Team Canada and hold a World Junior camp in December. They will invite back the top players from this summer and the ones that have been playing well up to that point in the season. Then they will choose the final members of the team from that group. Players that were cut from this summer's camp may be invited back if they are playing well. And the whole thing will take place at the Ralph starting December 15th. The team will play UND on Dec. 19th. -
I am pretty sure that they are open to all league possibilities. However, the Big Sky has shown very little interest in expansion and even less interest in expanding to the Central time zone. Something major would have to change within the league before they would seriously consider UND. The only league that currently is actively interested in expansion and makes sense geographically is the Summit.

Do we have a Snoopy on defense to take him down?
-
As of right now it is being reported as a home/home. Of course we may learn something different later. I just hope that Montana actually makes the trip to Grand Forks.
-
It looks like Baron Batch will be back early and available to face the Fighting Sioux.
-
Wayne confirms the Montana game for next year and expects the game at the Alerus for 2013.
-
Just wanted a clarification for anyone just tuning in. I know that NDSU also played the Griz several years ago but IIRC it was a single game contract.
-
The Cats or the Griz? That would be the Montana State Bobcats or the University of Montana Grizzlies?
-
You are correct, their attitude has changed a little bit in recent years. I believe their limited travel policy started several years ago when they had financial problems in their athletic program. They sell out every home game, no matter the opponent. So they scheduled as many home games as possible to make as much money as possible. The problem is that quality FCS programs don't like to schedule only road games against other FCS teams, they want home and homes. The Montana fanbase has tired of playing so many lesser programs. So it sounds like the Griz are starting to schedule some actual home and homes again and they might actually make a return trip. I just hope that any buyout in the contract is rather large.
-
They don't like to travel for non-conference games, so I would be surprised if they showed up in Grand Forks.
-
You still can't guarantee that UND would have had that game, although there is a good chance they would have been first choice. But UMTC didn't have to sign a contract for a game 3 years out this early. If they wanted to play UND they could have waited 3 months and the decision would have been made either way about the nickname. That tells me that UMTC just wanted to get a game on the schedule and weren't as concerned as you are about playing a regional school every year.
-
There is absolutely no guarantee that UMTC would have scheduled a game with UND in 2012 with or without the nickname issue. Open dates may not have lined up, UMTC may have wanted to take a break from playing regional FCS teams, they may not have offered enough dollars to UND if UND got another FBS offer, or who knows what else could have prevented the schools from playing. There is also no guarantee that the nickname will have to be changed. I agree that the chances of getting a 30 year agreement are slim. The SBOHE may pull back from that number, maybe allow a 20 year agreement, if the tribes would agree to that. Or the tribes may just decide to remain in opposition. A process in in place to decide the nickname issue. UND will let it play out and move on from there. Making a rash move to gain 1 game against Minnesota or any other school would have been very short-sighted and would have been a mistake.

It sounds like the answer is yes and no. He was one of the players allowed to go home when they reduced the roster for the rest of camp (they cut back to 29). But the actual WJ roster will be decided in December and will be based on this camp plus play through the first couple months of the season. So any of the players that were in camp this summer can still make the team, and they could even go off the board and add someone else. So yes, he was sent home during the cut down, but no he hasn't officially been cut from the team because it won't be chosen for 4 months. -
What's the deal with giving athletic scholarships to old, washed-up actors? A few years ago Lee Marvin was playing hockey. Can't these guys afford to pay for school with all the money they made in the movies?

The vote at Spirit Lake and a potential vote at Standing Rock would be meaningless to the NCAA if the tribal councils on both reservations don't agree to allow the use of the name. The tribal councils have the last say on the matter, the votes of the members are non-binding. However, if the tribal councils both agree to allow the use of the Fighting Sioux nickname then neither the administration at UND or the NCAA will stand in the way under the current policy.

There may be some similarity in style of typing, but I'm pretty sure that this isn't the aforementioned NDSU fan. If you look at previous posts from GF siouxfan he looks like an actual Sioux fan. There is no way that our "friend" from the south could have made as many positive posts about UND as GF has done without his head exploding.

Check the source, it looks like you have fellow rodents abandoning the good ship Lucia.

Since they sold out just about every game, including the Manitoba game, they don't have to do it right now. Attendance at the Manitoba game was 11,571 last year.
-
It probably would. But demand is higher for Gopher games so I am sure that is why they are priced a little higher.
-
The demand from Badger fans isn't quite as high as it is from Gopher fans, probably in large part because the travel distance is a little further.

The press release stated that the money would be given at $2 million per year over 10 years. The first check was presented shortly after that, so at a minimum they made a donation of $2 million for academics. That was approximately 2 years ago. If UND didn't receive the check a year ago there would have been some Engelstad enemy such as yourself that would have made a stink about it. We get it, you didn't like Ralph and don't like his family. But you can't debate the fact that they have donated large sums of money for a variety of good causes whether you like how they got the money or not.
-
This press release at fightingsioux.com talks about the donation of $20 million for scholarships and other academic uses at the University of North Dakota. It also discusses many other donations made by the Engelstads.
-
Because they can sell them for that. Plus, the lower bowl is pretty much all sold out through season tickets and students so the only seats available are in the upper deck.

This video from the Star Tribue website is a clip of Brad Childress talking about Jim Kleisasser. In it he talks about several things including him being in good shape for a 270 lb man and how Childress mistook him for a maintenance man the first time he saw Kleisnasser in the locker room.
