From a leprechaun? I don't think that information has been released. The tournament will be at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, IL and you can check the link for information as it is released.

Since hockey is the biggest draw it probably has a place in both forums. I just thought I would mention that it was in Community for those people that don't pay attention to hockey (all 3 of them ;-)).
-
This was posted under Community because it includes other sports also.

I didn't see this anywhere else. Brad has updates on a few former Sioux. Watkins can become a free agent if he doesn't sign with Dallas by August 15th, just like Porter did a couple of years ago. Radke is going back to Idaho of the ECHL and Schneekloth is staying with Colorado of the CHL.

Brad has a new story on TJ Oshie in the Sunday Grand Forks Herald.

NDSU would probably need a similar sized donation to make it happen. So we need several schools switching conferences and multi-million dollar donations made to both UND and NDSU all within a fairly short window in time. I think that's doable.

I think it would be tough using the Alerus for any length of time without a major overhaul, and I believe that said overhaul would be a tough sell for the city unless UND paid for it. I think that adding another 44 scholarships (going from 63 to 85 for football and the same increase for women) would be very difficult. I think that the travel would be tougher and more expensive for other sports when compared to the Summit. And it might be a tough sell to go alone, unless at least one of the other Dakota schools went along. NDSU would of course be the most logical, but that would require the schools working together. Bottom line, it would cost a lot of money to make it happen and UND would need to increase their ticket buying fanbase for football and basketball by a significant margin to make it worthwhile. It isn't impossible, but it would definitely be a tough task and a tough sell at this time. Especially to the people that think UND should have stayed in DII.

The 2 teams out of the Big Sky that would make the most sense to me would be Montana and Montana State. That would make the Big Sky less desirable to UND. But it might make the Big Sky look at Cal Poly and Davis, or more likely Southern Utah and Utah Valley University. Southern Utah going to the Big Sky would probably make a lot of Summit League members happy because they could shrink their footprint and decrease travel. But anyone leaving the Great West for football would hurt UND. UND would have a tough time making the leap to FBS with the current facilities, even without looking at things like travel to compete in the WAC and scholarships and all of the other things it would entail. UND would have to build a new football stadium plus the indoor training facility before they would have any chance to move up. Plus they would have to develop the attendance at all sports. UND won't be ready to even think about another move up to FBS for quite a while.

In the shadows, not necessarily because they have their own niche and their own following. But their logo doesn't help them because most people across the country will either think of Georgia or the Green Bay Packers. The only way you know it's Grambling is if it also says Grambling, which means the logo is not effective. Will they become more popular with a new logo, maybe or maybe not. That would depend on the quality of the logo and what they did with it. But they would be able to be more identifiable with a new logo. Grambling may be satisfied with the niche they are in, one of the former black colleges. If I remember right, their league doesn't participate in the FCS tournament so they have already chosen to run things a little differently. If they like the niche then I would tell them to keep the logo. If they want to be more identifiable on a national scale I would tell them to change the logo. It goes back to what I have said before, if you want to run the program like the big boys you will want a unique logo or unique identifier. If you want to have your school continually confused with a larger competitor than you can use something that looks like a copy. That is what a few of the smaller schools do because they have no concerns about being recognized on a national scale.

Sorry Dave, I'm trying to think outside the box. UND doesn't have an unlimited budget. And people really don't care who had it first, the other guys have it now. So we need something that isn't exactly the same other than color (especially since they use green as a school color too). Sharing may be good for children, but it isn't going to work when one of the major names in college athletics is so far out front. We will always be in very deep, dark shadows if we try to share a logo with them.
-
Look familiar Dave? Continuing to use a logo that you know will always be associated with another school instead of your school is really thinking small time.

It's pretty simple. Either it is an important topic, which means that a democratic decision by a vote of the people would be appropriate if they choose to do it, or it is a trivial issue, which means that the tribal government probably shouldn't be wasting any time getting involved in any way. It's awfully difficult to say that it is important enough for the tribal council but the people really shouldn't bother themselves with it.

For the 3rd time I ask, do they want to follow the path of the big boys by having a distinct logo or if they want to settle for being a copycat (as it appears to 99% of the population)?
-
Did you even read what I said? I said that UND had the logo first in that post. And in previous posts I have pointed out that the perception of the public is that the logo belongs to Notre Dame even if UND had it first. Also, I asked if they want to follow the path of the big boys by having a distinct logo or if they want to settle for being a copycat (as it appears to 99% of the population). The level distinction only applies to football, if UND is going to use this logo for any length of time it will end up being used in other sports where UND may compete directly with Notre Dame (like they have always done in hockey, the only other sport you are interested in following).

It was a pretty free wheeling game, at least the parts we could watch through the fog. IIRC Eddie Belfour even played wing instead of playing goalie.
-
The bottom line is that the top level of college sports, FBS level of Division I, have distinct logos and do not copy others that they may compete with. Lower levels sometimes copy the big boys. Should UND follow the path of the big boys or should they settle by being another copycat (even if they technically had the logo first)?

If voting on a nickname is such a small item, of so little importance, so trivial, than why does an important legislative body such as a tribal council need to get involved? An issue is as important as the people want it to be. If the citizens of the reservations want to decide the issue then the democratic way to decide it is to let them. The proper treatment isn't to force a decision on them by a their elected government.

UND had an alumni hockey game several years ago. I believe that it was held in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of hockey as a varsity sport (maybe 1998 or 1999). It was during the summer and held at the old Ralph, I believe it was in July. It was so warm out that there was a fog hanging over the ice. But it was a fun event. They had part of the event on campus and then I think that a bunch of the players ended up at someone's lake cabin for the rest of the weekend. Edit: I think it was a free event and attendance wasn't real huge, probably only a few hundred in attendance but it could have been more.

And common sense.

They start drinking as soon as they are tall enough to reach the bar in Wisconsin.

To compare how schools can use the same logo I went back and looked at how many schools used paw prints logos on their football helmets. The entire current list in FBS is: Clemson Tiger paw print The FBS list in historical terms (to 1960) also includes: University of Ohio from late 70s to mid 90s California used a bear paw print with Cal over it during the mid 80s Since this list was statistically very small I moved on to include current FCS school: South Dakota Coyote paw print Sam Houston State Bearcats have a small paw print superimposed over SH since 2005 Savannah State has a small paw print under initials SSU, have used a plain paw print in the past at times The FCS list in historical terms includes: Idaho State for 1 season in 2000 Northeastern in the mid to late 90s Brown had bear print in early 2000s Albany had great dane paw print late 70s to mid 80s Lafayette in early 80s Drake in early 2000s Still not finding a lot I moved on to DII current teams: Northwood St Josephs Northwest Missouri State has Bearcat print with N imbedded Pace has paw print with P imbedded Wayne State has paw print with WSC imbedded Adams State has grizzly print West Virginia Wesleyan bobcat print And DII historical teams: West Alabama through early 2000s Concord a couple of times I could have gone on to DIII and NAIA, but felt this was enough research. A couple of schools have logos that use initials and then add toes to try to make it look similar to a paw print. This research is not 100% accurate, especially for the smaller schools. My conclusions are that very few schools use paw prints as logos, especially at the upper levels. At the upper levels, even the few schools that have used them have tended to stop. And that the only schools that copy logos or use logos very similar to other schools are the smaller schools. Division I schools try to have unique logos so that they are recognizable. Sorry for the length of this post.

I've heard that multiple times in different parts of the country. And people don't really care who used it first. They perceive it as being "the Notre Dame logo" and you know what they say about perception. Some deviation might be a good move.

I figured out where our friend Jeff Dubay has been

Mr. Dubay has been sent to the county workhouse after failing the latest drug abuse program. -
Who cares what anyone else thinks? UND should keep using the interlocking ND logo as long as they want, even if that other "UND" doesn't like it.

UND makes top 20 on list of top party schools.
