  1. Stuckinfargo is out. Good thing someone else is playing goal this year.
  2. It's tough to get real excited about another DII game, but at least Western Washington is a solid team and the game should be competitive. Obviously it would be nice to have USD in Grand Forks next year, but we can't really complain too much if it's not. I've always considered the location of that game to be 50/50, certainly not automatic that it would be in Grand Forks. It's a new era and the GWFC has no obligation to follow the NCC rotation. Western Washington makes 4 home games so far (assuming SCSU is legit). Three DII and one DI. I hope there is one more DI home game on the schedule to get to 5 home games, whether that's USD or some other DI school. As tough as scheduling is this year, I'd still be disappointed if Southern Utah was the only DI home game on the schedule.
  3. In hindsight, knowing that the State would only grow to 650,000 people, they should have combined the two institutions at their inception. But they didn't and there's no going back now. If Chapman and NDSU would rather compete than cooperate, then I say UND should take the gloves off and compete. No sense complaining about it. Back to the original topic, I just assumed both NDSU and UND already had state-wide radio coverage. If not, that's a pretty sad commentary on both institutions as far as I'm concerned.
  4. Whoops. You're right. There are only 6 confirmed games right now. SCSU and SE Louisiana would put UND at 8. Another unconfirmed rumour is South Dakota a second time, but I assume (hope?) that's a last resort option.
  5. Residency is not permanent. Residency is not necessarily the address on your driver's license. It's more of a personal declaration. It's where someone actually lives combined with intent to stay for an undetermined period. A UND student could easily declare Grand Forks as their residency during their four or five years there, even if they intend to leave Grand Forks when they graduate. However, many students like to keep their residency at their hometown while they are at college and vote at their home precinct (usually by absentee ballot). That is the student's decision, and either one is fine as long they pick just one. According to this document on the North Dakota Secretary of State website, there are ways to prove residency other than a driver's license. http://www.state.nd.us/hava/education/doc/...equirements.pdf
  6. Doesn't the State determine residency requirements for voting purposes? I can't imagine the State gives municipalities the power to determine who gets to vote in their town. So if students think it's too tough to prove Grand Forks residency to vote, they should complain to the State Legislature, not the City of Grand Forks. Any students interested in voting in Grand Forks should research what it takes to prove residency. I know in Minnesota, it's not all that tough and I don't believe you have to change your driver's license.
  7. SCSU and SE Louisiana are the only two unconfirmed rumours out there. Those would put UND at 9 games. So there must be a couple other teams that UND is still talking to, but I haven't anything about who they are. And from the Herald article today: So presumably, Cal Poly is still a possibility, as remote as it may be.
  8. I don't really care where the students vote as long as they vote only once. If they choose Grand Forks as their residence while they are going to school at UND, they should vote in Grand Forks. If they don't, then they should vote at home.
  9. Yes, there was. If a traveling trophy was not started when it was fashionable to start a traveling trophy -- or when the teams first started playing each other -- it's going to take time for it to seem legitimate. I'll feel the same way about a new trophy between UND and USD.
  10. I can only speak to football, but I think UND and USD have always been rivals, just not arch-rivals. In DI, it will be a rivalry-out-of-necessity at first. Whether it blossoms into a legitimate heated rivalry will depend upon what happens on the field. My two cents - if they don't bring Sitting Bull back, I'd prefer no traveling trophy. I think contrived traveling trophies like the I-29 marker are stupid. A traveling trophy should have history.
  11. Mussman half-jokingly said when he was hired that he would want a home-and-home arrangement before considering scheduling SIU. The implication was that SIU was so good that it wouldn't make sense to play them right away unless UND got a home game out of it. Obviously circumstances have changed a bit since then. But I think this is a good move despite the fact that UND doesn't get a return home game out of it. It's top-quality competition and it builds goodwill. Politically, I don't think Lennon could come out of the gate with a home-and-home against his transitioning former school. But maybe SIU may consider a home-and-home contract at some point down the road.
  12. I don't think it's a sure thing that South Dakota will be at home next year. The league will determine where that game is played and does not have to follow the NCC rotation. South Dakota does not currently have a league home game and the league may see that they do.
  13. I'd guess the "misunderstanding" was that he didn't know his application would be made public. This was discussed with the search for President, but I think the open records laws should be changed to shield early-round applications to certain high-profile jobs. The State's interest in having as many qualified people as possible applying for these jobs outweighs the public's interest in knowing who is applying, at least at the earliest stage of the process.
  14. I doubt the Commissioner's motivation was to police Cal Poly's schedule for their own good. I think Hammersmith's explanation is much more plausible. I think the USD-UND game will be played in Vermillion again. The league will want to ensure that everyone has at least one home conference game. That kind of takes away the benefit of UND thinking ahead and scheduling Southern Utah to a home-and-home. But at the same time, the GWFC has no obligation to continue the NCC scheduling rotation.
  15. I confirmed that stuckinfargo is in as well and will play up. This will be the first year we won't have stuckinfargo in goal. You have BIG shoes to fill aleah.
  16. I think Diggin42 has been our contact the last couple years. If he's not interested this year, I can do it. I'll play again. I'll ask stuckinfargo if he wants to play again. I'm sure he'd be more than willing to play up this year if aleah wants to play net.
  17. Wow. Kelley is UND search committee's sole presidential finalist
  18. I'm sure BSU appreciates UND helping them out in scheduling the last several years. But I have no doubt that, given their choice, BSU would choose the Gophers to open up their new rink in a heartbeat. Being the Big Ten school of their own State, and the State-wide television that would accompany the game, would make the game feel bigger to the taxpayers that helped build the rink (especially to those taxpayers who are not avid college hockey fans). The reality is that non-Gopher fans throughout the region like to complain that Minnesota is arrogant, and at the same time, perpetuate that arrogance by treating them special.
  19. I don't doubt any of the stories on here about Mankato fans, but thought I would share that I spent all day Saturday in my Sioux sweatshirt in Mankato, at the game and the bars, and I didn't hear one negative word said in my direction. The Mankato fans seemed pretty tame to me.
  20. I was talking about competition. UND could possibly be competitive in DI lacrosse, but will never be anywhere close to competitive in DI baseball. Obviously UND would have to look at the finances before adding a sport. If they don't think lacrosse would break even, then they probably wouldn't add it.
  21. In the short term, Shawn-O is dead-on. UND has to wait until the conference affiliation thing shakes out before making a long-term decision on baseball. But generally speaking, unless UND needs baseball to help it get into a conference, I would be in favor of dropping it in favor of a sport like lacrosse. I'm sure the baseball players have been excellent additions to UND. But wouldn't lacrosse players be as well? (no Duke jokes please!) The bottom line is that UND will always be at a disadvantage in baseball due to the climate. Theoretically, UND could compete in a sport like lacrosse (using the Alerus Center as a venue). Moreover, times are changing. Lacrosse is on the up-swing in this country among the youth. It would be nice to see UND get in on the ground floor.
  22. If the Big Ten schools leave to form their own conference, they could fill out their new conference with pretty much any schools they want. If no other Big Ten schools add hockey, they could fill it out with non-Big Ten affiliate members. Maybe UND would be chosen as an affiliate member, maybe not. But I have no doubt as to which UND would prefer. If you're fine with UND being in a conference without Minnesota and Wisconsin, that's great. But I suspect you're in a tiny minority of Sioux fans that feel that way. I agree Minnesota and Wisconsin don't run the WCHA, but the reality is that they are the only schools where if they left, the others would ask if they could follow.
  23. You can call it mildly threatening if you want. Before the Big Ten Network, I also didn't give much thought to it. But all I know now is that the Big Ten Network would love to see it happen and the only thing standing in its way is the fact that the majority of Big Ten schools don't want it right now. Irritating two of the very schools that hold the power to make it happen is not in UND's best interest.
