  1. '98 (15 years old) isn't so bad. Kid could be in the CHL soon if he wasn't planning on NCAA.

I agree that it's not that bad; I seem to remember Kristo making his first visit or call to UND as a freshman. It's just still on the young side, so there's a higher risk that development doesn't continue along the projected path.

  2. Honestly, the one that most surprises me is the World Arena in Colorado Springs. Yes, it has hotels and places to eat nearby, and parking isn't astronomical like at some other arenas. But the last couple years I've been there the student section only has the first row or two filled out, and a substantial amount of the lower bowl is open for changing seats.

  3. Tonights Hammerism was calling RT O'Sullivans in Mesa RT Sullivans.

That was driving me nuts. It wouldn't have been a big deal if they only said it once, but since they continued to drop the name repeatedly, they should probably get that right.

The RTO's in Glendale carried all the games, too, though our crowd was significantly smaller than down in Mesa.

  4. I certainly hope that the veterans have warned the newbies about Bemidji. On paper, they may be easy to overlook. But despite the predominantly winning record against them, they always play the Sioux tough.

I love your sig quote, 90siouxfan. Duncan is so talented and yet so humble.

  5. Define "played." The tires the team throws on the ice for practice just to skate around don't get to claim they played, do they?

Hey, I actually played against the crappy teams (which included Bemidji). Though I was quite a phenomenal bench door opener against teams like Warroad and Hibbing.

At least I didn't quit hockey after 4th grade. :)

  6. In my opinion, it's a higher end version of the Scheel Arena. I like it. I got a tour when it opened and it's got a lot of amenities.

Any idea how the ice quality is in comparison to the old arena? I played there once in high school, and it was the softest, most miserable ice I've ever played on. I always felt bad for the boys when they had to play there.

  7. Oshie with 2 goals not even through two periods tonight. Both from backes. I'm guessing they play on the same line as well in Sochi.

Oshie with 38 points through 44 gams so far. Look forward to Olympic hockey with the three former sioux stars!

He's been great with assists all season, but he's definitely been making a statement since being selected.

  8. Great, as if I didn't have enough trouble trying to keep Mitch and Mark straight, now I have to remember that there are two kids named Colten on the team too?

Technically, you have Colten, Colten, and Coltyn :)

  9. Hennessy during the radio broadcast last weekend did mention Tambellini's dad was in attendance. I'm sure he had some influence on him leaving after watching how badly UND struggled against Canadian colleges. His dad was an NHL exec

But with needing his rights traded to Calgary, it's highly unlikely that this process didn't get started before last weekend.

  10. His brother racked up 45 pts his freshman year. Also, it seems times are slowly shifting back toward the CHL route for higher rated players. Blue chipers typcically went the CHL route prior to the early 2000's....then during the early to mid 2000's college hockey pulled in a ton of high drafted players. The past 2/3 years have slowly shifted back to the CHL....not overly sure why as they have always offered money under the table. I truly think the NHL teams (which own the CHL) are pushing that route behind the scenes.

I didn't realize that his brother was also a first round draft pick. He probably would have been successful any which way.

Bottom line: If you're not scoring goals, work to be better. At the very least, finish the season before bolting.

  11. I think it's interesting that Tambellini's brother played at Michigan and then played in the NHL. So it's not like he doesn't know anyone who has made it from the college game to the NHL.

  12. Agree on your last sentence however there are more 19 and 20 year olds in that league. I don't believe there are any 15 year olds in the Dub. When players are granted exceptional player status (ohl) they typically are sure fire a top 3 NHL pick....that's talent that doesn't come around college (anymore).

I know. I think 15 year olds are limited to 5 games anyway. But there's still a huge difference in physical maturity between 19/20 and 22/23/24; just looking at the Herald pictures from MacWilliam's freshman season shows that.

  13. Maybe it wasn't a mistake? For those of you that think Nchc is a complete step above the whl....you may be mistaken.

Or maybe it's because he's now playing in a league of 15-20 year olds. The average freshman college hockey player is 20. Those few years can make a huge difference in physical maturity and difficulty to play against.

  14. Actually Brock had like 20 some points his freshman year.....tambo was on pace for half of that.

Yeah, but most of those points for Brock came in the second half. At Christmas, he wasn't very far ahead of where Tambellini was.

  15. Colten would center regardless of Bryn or Panz, but I can see your point of Bryn not playing. Although if he has paid his debt I hope he plays over Panz.

I guess it would depend on how hard he'd been practicing on his own. I was under the impression that he wasn't allowed to practice with the team during this suspension. In that case, I think I'd take Panz and give Chyzyk a week to get back into the swing of things.

  16. Technically Chyzyk was reinstated Monday. But just because Tambelini's departure didn't get released until today doesn't mean the coaches didn't know about it on Monday.

  17. As big of a supporter of Bryn as I have been, I agree. This was his 3rd documented alcohol offense. Chyzyk being reinstated today...after Tambo bolts...doesn't look good.

Technically, Chyzyk was reinstated Monday. But it does look rather sketchy at first observation.

Hakstol said Bryn fulfilled his responsibilities with the program and with the University. I wonder what those were, because it certainly doesn't seem like much time has passed. Though if he comes back and turns into the next Matt Frattin, I guess I'd be okay with that.

  18. Care to elaborate for those of us who missed it?

Hak said "This is not an easy place to play at, or be successful, nor should it be."

Simpson said "That's his decision. Our locker room won't worry about it; we have big games this week against CC."

Those quotes are per UND Men's Hockey on Twitter.
