I have not been a supporter of the nickname Roughriders in the past, but see it as the best of the remaining 7 options. My biggest problem has been that it was not unique, since RRHS uses that name along with various professional teams and high schools. It is, however, unique in the college ranks, though. And there is linkage between TR, Roughriders and North Dakota. Last time there was a guy who wanted to get in the race for UND president, but didn't due to ND open recorded laws. I believe he had just become president at Shippensburg. Perhaps you are right that it will be deemed an epic failure, but let's layout it out correctly. The Sioux Uprising didn't occur in North Dakota. It occurred in Southwestern Minnesota. The Dakota Calvary was protecting the settlers, kind of the reason that a lot of folks now live in North Dakota. So we can't have Sioux, because it dishonors them. We can't have Arrows because it is Native American imagery. We can't have Cavalry because they protected the white folks. Like Oxbow said, welcome North Dakota Green. I would say North Dakota White, but that would be racist.

Roughriders is not unique. Not only the HS, but Cedar Rapids for hockey, Saskatchewan for football and Frisco Texas for AAA Baseball. I can't find a HS, College or Professional team with the nickname Cavalry. That is unique. And for the record, I don't/didn't hate RRHS. I played football there.

Of the remaining names left, Cavalry has the most appeal to me. And I think the potential for logos and marketing for the name is tremendous. North Dakota Cavalry. Has a nice ring to it.

Are these guys really that important that they need a chief of staff? It looks to me like another layer of insulation to provide plausible deniability. Your job is to run the University. I know that the GFH piece that first came out about the "weeding out" said that Arrows was eliminated because it is considered Native American imagery. Was this an oversight by the Herald or was there a change of position by the committee? And yes, this is wishful thinking MafiaMan.

I thought of that when I was posting. Just trying to point out that arrows go back thousands of years and using the bible was the best way to prove that point, which is lost on the powers that be anyway.
