  1. Check Hypocrisy at the Door

Hypocrisy is everywhere these days. In pop culture, it's Donald Trump playing judge, jury, and executioner of ethics and morality. In politics, it's former Congressman Mark Foley chairing the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children. In sports, it's T.O. opening his mouth. It's the fart in the room that nobody wants to claim, and until someone opens a window, it seems it's staying stinkily put.

    columnist-dekrey

It's no different at the University of North Dakota, especially when discussing the ever-problematic and ever-controversial 'Fighting Sioux' nickname. Three specific instances of blatant hypocrisy have emerged in the course of the whole mess that makes one question the merits of the circumstances at hand, leaving one to wonder

  2. You're entitled to your opinion. I think the SEC is overrated and the Big 10 is underrated. That's my opinion and nothing you say is going to change my mind. I'm done with this argument.

Thanks for use of the gif, PCM.

  3. Dave the season is over. Florida won. Give it a rest.

BTW, it wouldn't suprise me to see Florida back there again next year. Good coach. Good Kids. SPEED.

Did you know that Florida is now the Divison I champ in both basketball and football. It has never happened before.

  4. A list of Proposed UND Capital Projects for 2007-2009

Of course the eye-catcher is the indoor practice facility.

  5. One additional point about the time zone... While it is true that people get their news less and less from television and the morning news paper we shouldn't forget what the people want reported (and what television and newspapers have to offer). While all of the scores would be available fairly soon after the game is over, any articles and or television highlights would have to wait til the next day. I want to see the highlights and read the local angle and I don't want to wait til day 2..... The score is really a secondary thing.

I haven't lived in GF since 1993, so I'm not sure about the coverage the local media is providing. On the away games are they currently showing the game highlights that same night? With advances in broadcasting and video streaming that will become reality. Star2City knows more about the media packages available with the Big Sky, but I believe that the Altitude Network has teamed up with the Big Sky in a television package.

I would hope that the Herald would be sending a reporter with the team on road trips and with the technologies available today, I can see no reason why they can't get the story in the paper for the next morning, at the very least in the online version.

  6. Op/Ed in Winnipeg Free Press.

    Lure Penguins to Winnipeg

I hope that the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce and Manitoba Hotel Association are working with the group trying to relocate the Pittsburgh Penguins to Winnipeg. I know that NHL president Gary Bettman is reluctant to put a team back in Winnipeg; especially with a player with the talents of Sidney Crosby. I know that hockey fans from Regina, Thompson, Kenora, Grand Forks, Fargo and Brandon will be coming to Winnipeg to see Crosby play.
  7. History says the nickname had a tremendous impact on Indian programs at UND. If it wasn't for the Fighting Sioux nickname, UND would likely be no more distinquished than NDSU or SDSU as far as its Indian programs. In other words: pathetic.

Nor would UND be proposing to spend $10M on an American Indian Center.

  8. The Herald has picked up the story with Buning's comments added.

UND NICKNAME: Brand: NCAA won't back down

"Based on Brand's statement, I'm glad we have the injunction and if this is a projected fight, at least the sanctions that would negatively affect the student athletes are off the table for now," Buning told the Herald on Tuesday. "It definitely places great value on the injunction."

Buning was at the NCAA Convention in Orlando, Fla., and he was greeted with many questions as to the status of the nickname debate at UND, he said.

"People were all very interested and yet I don't know if those people realize how much a part of everyday culture that image is here," said Buning. "This requires a individualized approach to the issue more than a cookie-cutter one."

  9. While there may be pockets in CO and AZ, the vast majority of out-of-state alumni are in the Twin Cities and that's clearly a check for the Mid-Con. While having football and basketball in the same league would be nice, I don't think it's a necessity. And people consistently seem to neglect the time difference. That would certainly hurt media coverage, with games not finishing it time for newspaper deadlines and the evening news.

While your time zone point is a valid one, I don't think the Twin Cities/Mid-Con connection is as strong an argument. Other than NDSU and SDSU the Mid-Con is in Shreveport, Kansas City, Rochester Hills MI, Tulsa, Cedar City UT, Macomb IL, Indianapolis and Fort Wayne IN. None of these cities are particularly close to MSP. I would think that UND would be attempting to schedule both SDSU and NDSU on an annual basis regardless of which conference the Sioux end up in.

With the Big Sky, you would have UM and MSU next door. UNC is close to Denver, Flagstaff is about a 2 hour drive from Phoenix and all of the grads in the Seattle and Portland areas.

Back to the time zone issue. With the internet, I think people rely far less on the nightly newscast and the morning paper. If and when all of the games are streamed, you will have less of a time zone issue.

  10. The Big Sky has fallen considerably with the losses of Boise St., Idaho and Nevada. I'm not sure how UND is a good fit for the Sky at this point. The sporting offerings don't match up, it's a very poor geographic fit - let alone the time zone issues, and it doesn't fit into the UND recruiting footprint. As much as it pains some, the Mid-Con is clearly a better fit.

As discussed previously and pictorally with Wyobison's NDSU's alumni map, UND and NDSU have big pockets of fan support in AZ and CO, not to mention the Pacific NW. Plus one home for the "money" sports would be great. I think Swimming and Diving could become part of the Mid-Con or Horizon as an associate member. The big problem with the Big Sky insofar as a conference home for sports would be baseball and softball.

  11. If it is true that he would then bring it up on membership vote, then he must feel that he has the vote to do it. Why else would he say "It's done."?

I have absolutely no legal experience, so I'll have to rely on those who do to explain Brand's comments.

Additionally, aren't these kind of comments fodder for the lawsuit?

  12. Brand: NCAA stands by nickname ban

Win or lose a legal fight in North Dakota, NCAA president Myles Brand says the association won't back off its controversial restrictions on schools' use of Native American nicknames and mascots.

A state judge handling the University of North Dakota's challenge has urged the sides to settle in advance of a trial scheduled for Dec. 10.

"There are probably ways to reach mediation," Brand said, "but the NCAA will not be changing its position on this. We'll help and work with the university if they so desire, (though) they have not shown any desire at this point."

"We'll pursue this case up to an appeal to the state supreme court if it's necessary; we're committed to that," Brand said. "But this court is not considering anything substantive. They're just looking at the procedural issue of the way the NCAA made its decision. … If we win, that's fine. We think we should. But if we lose, we'll just change our procedures. … The measure is not being challenged. So we're not going to even look at that measure. It's in place. It's done."

Someone said it earlier today. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

I also see in the article where the USA Today had us hosting a I-AA playoff game.

  13. I'm also applying for this job. Since it doesn't exist yet, I'm also in process of writing my job description, compensation and incentives package.

I figure I'll start interviewing potential assistant coaches in the next month or so. Blaiser will be welcome to apply. :D

Don't forget to set up your lucrative severance package, so you have a golden parachute should things go south down south.

  14. More news on the Northern border surveillance

CBP Unmanned Aircraft to Patrol Northern Border

U.S. Customs and Border Protection today announced its decision to establish a northern border unmanned aircraft system (UAS) pilot program. Based in Grand Forks, N.D., the pilot program will be established by the end of fiscal year 2007.

"As unmanned aircraft have proven to be effective on our southern border, this first step in North Dakota will lay the foundation to expand UAS operations along the nation's northern border," said Michael Kostelnik, assistant commissioner, CBP Air and Marine. "As Customs and Border Protection expands air operations along the northern tier, the presence of the UAS will further enhance our situational awareness."

CBP decided to establish the pilot program in Grand Forks because of its central location along the northern border. With the program based in Grand Forks, CBP will have the capability to launch UAS operations across the entire northern tier.

  15. Yeah, well, that's been well documented here. I thought it wouldn't hurt to throw out some positives for all you Negative-Nellies.

Thanks for analysis Dagies. I'm looking forward to a great 2nd half of the season. All of the pieces are there. Execute and win. Go Sioux !!!

  16. AD Harper addresses coaching, fights and letters

"My personal opinion, why I wrote to The D, is that I think that if characterization of a race and anything is hurtful to a group of people, no matter what, then we should really not do it. You just try to be respectful of somebody's feelings." she said during the interview.
Once again, I must ask, how is UND doing anything that is hurtful to a race??

Thank goodness Josie isn't in charge of anything else. In her world, if anyone was going to be offended, nothing could move forward. Someone is always is going to be on the short end of the stick. Someone is always is going to be offended in some way, real or otherwise.

When asked if she would amend anything from her original statement, Harper said she would have made it clear that she was speaking only to Dartmouth. "I might have said a hundred times before I started after I wrote the note to The D 'I would like to address our community.'"
