  1. You'd think that'd be the case if the justification was 'academics' based.

If the justification for "five years" is something else, say 'business decision', they probably would not waive it.

    They don't waive it.

    You decide.

Hmmm, that a tough decision.

  2. That's all well and good in theory, but in reality those dI "standards" aren't apparently all that difficult to get around in terms of getting academically-challenged "student"-athletes into a dI school. The Cincinnati basketball program under Bob Huggins would seem to have been a prime example of that.

Although I've been an FSU fan for years, I can't recall a year where at least one starter is declared academically ineligible for the bowl game after the end of the first semester.

  3. It's not to protect UND's student athletes, it's to protect the student athletes at other DI schools from UND's student athletes..

    Consider this hypothetical scenario:

school X, a DII school, signs a bunch of superman athletes who were unable to qualify academically with the DI standards but were able to qualify with the DII standards.

school X moves up to DI the next year and is then able to compete at the DI level with the supermen for 4 years, even though those kids should've never been at the DI level due to their low academics.

Essentially, it weeds out the DII academic guys so the school is working with only DI qualifiers when they start official DI play.

So if said DII school sets their academic standards at our above the DI level, they should be exempted from the probationary years?

  4. So what the hell happened with Veldman? What possessed him to go up the river?

I'm sure that it was tough decision, but he felt that NDSU was a better fit for him. Best of luck to him.

  5. I got an email from a friend in GF this morning saying he is thankful there is no wind as the temperature itself is cold enough today without adding the wind to it. I remember being thankful once like that. I was in Bismarck one morning in December of 1983 and got up to -40 degrees and thought it wasn't bad because of the lack of wind.

  6. He's waiting on the Gophers, why would he sign with NDSU until he finds out what is going on with the UofM? Nice try though. If the U tells him no or to walk on and if it drags out until 7th, then you might have a point because of the family connections with UND.

If you read further up the thread, MplsBison said

Aparantly Minnesota hasn't and will not offer Veldman.

I wasn't trying to contrive anything out of this. I was simply hypothesizing given what MplsBison stated. Take it for what is worth. Which is probably nothing. :)

  7. If this was a few years ago, or four years from now, I'd love UND's chances, given the family connections to UND and Lennon. With the impending transition period, it's tough to say what UND's chances are. It may depend in large part on what he wants to major in.

I agree that UND would have had a better chance 5 years ago, but I also have the view that the longer it takes Veldman to commit, the better chance UND has. If it was strictly going to a team that was playoff eligible, NDSU would be a slam dunk and he would have already committed.

  8. With the way the Sioux played over the last 8-9 minutes, I think they would have lost tonight regardless of who they were playing. SCSU is still the worst team in the league, tonight's game notwithstanding. UND won't have to play them in the regional, because SCSU won't be in it. But what tonight's game does show is that the margin for error between UND and everybody else isn't large enough to win without playing relatively well. I don't know whether losing to an average team like SCSU makes it easier or more difficult to take than losing to a really good team like Augie or USD?

You're right. My mind was on last season.

  9. Toews, Oshie appear in court

Police officers were called out to Judy's, at 1221 North 20th Street, just after 9 p.m. Sunday to investigate a report of possible minors on the premises.
Oshie and Toews were allegedly in Judy's Tavern on Sunday night in Grand Forks. Both are scheduled to appear for arraignment on charges of "minor not allowed on liquor premises" in municipal court on Feb. 12.
  10. Mark and Steve were the two Veldmans who played at UND. Didn't a third play at Moorhead State? If this kid is Mark or Steve's kid, and anyone played on those teams with them in the early 1980's, call those guys and make sure we don't lose this kid to the AC. Tell them if they let their son or nephew go to the AC Gene Murphy will come back and run over them with his scooter and make them do power conditioning until they puke. This kid could make this one of the best recruiting classes in school history.

I'm sure that you are probably joking about calling. But just so those don't know ... no tampering with recruits by boosters.

  11. What are the odds that we would see another article on the Sioux name in the St. Cloud State newspaper? :)

UND student speaks out against name

Frank Sage, a senior at the University of North Dakota (UND), a member of the Navajo Nation, a prominent speaker on American Indian issues, and the President of Building Roads Into Diverse Groups Empowering Students (BRIDGES) spoke out Monday, condemning UND, and its use of the Fighting Sioux nickname.

SCSU competes against UND in just about every collegiate sport. According to some American Indians, the use of the Sioux term has dehumanized their people by subjecting them to unfair persecution by opposing teams' fans.

Sage showed a video directed by Monica Briane, another American Indian activist. The video highlighted the historic plight of American Indians through periods of Euro-Christian cultural assimilation.

"Our primary purpose is to dismantle the use of the Fighting Sioux logo, and all the negativity that accompanies it," he said.

I guess it's good to have goals, even though they are destructive. (That was sarcasm Hammersmith :) )

The only negativity that I see from the logo comes from BRIDGES.

  12. I read a claim once that 401k/403b contributions are not counted as "savings" in surveys like this.

    Fact? Fiction?

You may be on to something, since 401 programs are pre-tax...

The savings rate is computed by taking the amount of personal income left after taxes are paid, an amount known as disposable income, and subtracting the amount of spending. Since the figure has dipped into negative territory, it means consumers are spending all of disposable income and then some.
    OTOH..

During the Great Depression, when one-fourth of the labor force was without a job, people dipped into savings in an effort to meet the basic necessities of shelter and clothing.

I doubt if this is what is occurring. I find it more likely that people are living beyond their means. Is every household now required to have a big screen HD TV? I see people with families down here spend huge dollars for the rims on their car and live paycheck to paycheck. Priorities and responsibilities are not what they used to be.

  13. I think the Bye week came at just the right time. A little cooling down period would be good regardless of whether the boys ride the bench or not. If Hakstol is going to sit them down, he has plenty of time to prepare for not playing them. Shuffling lines and such.

  14. Well if it's true that Holy Cross would have had to play an extra game before destroying the Gofers last year than it's officially a bad idea. Sorry GeauxSioux...

Nothing to apolgize to me for. I didn't write the article, I just posted it.

By the way Tommiejo, it has warmed up a lot since Sunday PM when we were below freezing. Tonight's low is about 50.

  15. Right Man For The Job

Amazingly, that script played out exactly as Fabian hypothesized. However, he credited a seemingly-irate Hakstol for that calm.

Hakstol spent five minutes prior to leaving the bench after the period ended in a heated discussion with referee Jon Campion over a penalty Campion called on Rylan Kaip, which was a shaky call at best. However, as angry as Hakstol looked, he was calm with his team."

Coach walked in, looked at the team, and said, "'We're okay here guys; we're only down a goal,' said Fabian. "Literally, that was about it. He put the game in our hands."
