  1. Floods of Memory

Brosseau says Grand Forks is the result of 10 years of thinking about the Red River flood, and in the album's finale, "97 Flood" he returns to his hometown. Backed by a slow and simple chord progression, the water rises higher with each quiet verse until it pours "into every corner, into every hall, to the pews in every church, to the stools in every bar." The simple documentary style of the song proves almost as devastating as the events it describes.
  2. Amendment would give chancellor greater powers

A proposed constitutional amendment would give the chancellor of North Dakota's university system broad powers, including the authority to hire and fire the presidents of its colleges.

The amendment, introduced by Rep. Bob Skarphol, R-Tioga, stems from the Board of Higher Education's handling of a dispute with former Chancellor Robert Potts that led to Potts' resignation last August.

  3. Ignore the issue all you want guys, it doesn't help your position it only makes you look weaker. It's obvious trying to have a serious discussion on this is a waste of time. With comments about seedless watermelons ect I can only say good luck to you in trying to improve your image as well as defend yourselves. I don't see either one being an easy task, the people I do feel sorry for are the American Indians with whom your issue is really with but you don't want to address that. That and of course those pesky taxpayers who think they have a right to know how a public institution is spending money. Silly thought all of them, dam the people and their silly rights this is UND after all who dares question them. Carry on its business as usual for some of you.

    One more time...

“I know how much it’s costing the taxpayers of North Dakota, and that is nothing,” Stenehjem said.
  4. You'd think, being a city commissioner and all, that Mike Williams would know what he is proposing is against city bylaws.

3-1509. Dedication of tax proceeds.--In accordance with Article 3P(4) of the Home Rule

Charter of the city of Fargo, the revenues raised and collected pursuant to this article, less

administrative expenses, are hereby dedicated to the construction, maintenance, and operation of a

multi-purpose dome facility to be located on or adjacent to the campus of North Dakota State

University to be used as a center for conventions and/or conferences, musical activities, sports

activities and such other convention, cultural and sports functions as the dome authority, hereinafter

created, may deem appropriate. Proceeds from such tax may be used to make direct payment of the

costs for such construction, maintenance and operation or may be pledged to amortize bonds or other

debt instruments which may be sold to finance such costs; provided, that such proceeds shall be

deposited in two separate funds, to be established and utilized as follows:

    A. FargoDome Debt Service and Reserve Fund - Proceeds from the sales and

use tax shall be placed in this fund in an amount which is sufficient to

amortize any bonds or other debt instruments which may be sold to finance

the construction cost of the FargoDome, and to provide a reserve therefor.

The amount to be placed in this fund and disbursed therefrom shall be as

provided in any resolution authorizing the bonds or other debt instruments.

    B. FargoDome Sales Tax Surplus Fund - All proceeds from the sales and use tax

which are not placed in the FargoDome Debt Service and Reserve Fund as

hereinabove provided shall be placed in this fund to be utilized for

construction, operation, and maintenance of the FargoDome. Use of such

funds by the Fargo Dome Authority shall be subject to approval of the board

of city commissioners of the city of Fargo.

According to the by-laws is an addition to the Farogdome covered here or is this language specifically for the original construction of the dome?

  5. I for one hope this venture succeeds, but by your directions, I assume you are describing the plot of land directly south of Famous Daves. That area is being developed now as retail and medical. Seems unlikely that the land available is sufficient in size for the scale of this project.

If you click on the general brochure in the following link there is a map of the area.

  6. UND seems to be in good company at the University Private Equity Summit.

More than 120 students from prestigious business schools will get an insider's look at the extraordinary opportunity....Participating schools include Arizona State University, Boston College, Brigham Young University, Carnegie Mellon, Harvard Business School, Occidental College, Purdue University, Syracuse University, University of Kansas, University of North Dakota, University of Oklahoma, University of Texas, University of Virginia, University of Wisconsin, Utah State University, Westminster College, Wharton University and William Paterson University.
Students Gain Insights on Entrepreneurship and Venture Capital from Industry Professionals at University Private Equity Summit

    Pretty neat concept.

For venture capitalists who want to discover and bankroll start-up companies taking early advantage of consumer trends and high-tech innovations, hanging out with students is an opportunity to learn as well as teach. "The University Private Equity Summit is the only private equity conference that brings together the next generation of entrepreneurial talent and today's experienced professionals," said John Crocker, managing director of Citigroup Private Equity, who has attended the conference for the past two years of its four-year run.
  7. Looks like things are coming together for an expansion to hockey in Fargo. Originally the cost was to be around 40 Million Dollars, that has since been reduced to around 34 Million. They are going to be built just north of 32nd Avenue & just west of 45th Street. The main arena will seat 4900 people and have 40 Luxury Suites, the main youth arena will seat 2200 and the other 3 youth rinks will hold 800 each. The cost of the main arena will be around 20 Million...the people behind the project have been working with NDSU to no avail...they would have went to a 7500 to 8000 seat rink if NDSU would have been interested. They are working with a couple different USHL teams, for now the Jets team looks like it will be going into a very nice facuility.

The youth rinks are projected to be done in October of 2008, with the main arena projected for October of 2009. I think it's fantastic that people have visions for the future. I know Fargo has never been noted for being a hockey town, but with this project I think things look very bright for the future of hockey in Fargo.

PS No matter what...I will always be a UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA FIGHTING SIOUX FAN.

Granted, I know very little of the state of hockey in Fargo, but what are they going to do with 40 luxury suites? The last time I remember seeing attendance figures for the Jets it was around 800.

  8. U.S. drones to patrol border

Never before has the U.S. kept such a close watch over its northern boundary. The move is a response to growing American fears that the entry of even one potential terrorist through Canada could have serious consequences, said Scott Baker. He took over last Friday as Chief Patrol Agent of Customs and Border Protection in Grand Forks, N.D., responsible for guarding the 1,400-kilometre stretch of border between Lake Superior and Montana.
Washington is working on the UAV project with the North Dakota Air National Guard, based in Fargo, and UND in Grand Forks. Ground controllers in Fargo will conduct Predator missions, but military officials in other places could also guide the remote-controlled drones.
  9. It appears that winter has finally arrived in GF. I'm waiting, not anxiously, for that cold blast to work it's way down to the Gulf Coast.

GF is cuurently at -17, while Pensacola is 59 degrees. That is a 76 degree difference.

GF high for today is -8, while Pensacola is 70.

I'm going to enjoy this while I can, because as I said it is going to plunge down south.

I had a meeting over in Kiln MS this week, at which one of the people had come in from Denver. All of the Southerners were talking about hold cold it must be in Denver. The guy from Denver chimed in that Denver doesn't compare to Grand Forks, ND. Of course at that point I told him that I was from GF and we had a long conversation about North Dakota. Turns out we were both involved in the same project 17 years ago at GFAFB.

    Keep warm.
