  1. Sioux land Utah State transfer

UND men's basketball coach Brian Jones didn't have much time to recruit last season as he took over the Sioux program in late May.

But he and his staff have had time to recruit this season. And Jones couldn't be happier with his first true recruiting class, which was topped off by Thursday's announcement that the Sioux had landed Utah State transfer O.J. Harrison, a 6-foot-4 wing who is expected to further upgrade UND's athleticism.

This team should be a lot of fun to watch. Good luck to Coach Jones on the season.
  2. Study: Newspapers Make Many Errors, Correct Few

As much as traditional media outlets and old-fashioned political types like to rag on blogs for being inaccurate, the fact is the old media is hardly a paragon of accuracy. According to a University of Oregon study (h/t Glenn Reynolds), newspapers are full of mistakes that almost never get corrected.

The average newspaper should expand by a factor of 50 the amount of space given to corrections if Scott R. Maier's research is any guide.

Maier, an associate professor at the University of Oregon's School of Journalism and Communication, describes in a forthcoming research paper his findings that fewer than 2 percent of factually flawed articles are corrected at dailies.

Maier's study relied on data gathered from 10 metropolitan newspapers: the Boulder Daily Camera, the Charlotte Observer, the Detroit Free Press, the Grand Forks Herald, the Lexington Herald-Leader, the Miami Herald (Broward Edition), the Philadelphia Inquirer, the San Jose Mercury News, the Tallahassee Democrat, and the Wichita Eagle.

  3. I think your missing the point, seeing things through your "stream yellow" glasses. "Anyplace, anywhere, anytime" would imply that you don't make excuses for not playing someone. On a side-note, didn't baseball carry through for one more year until the Bison decided they didn't want to play UND anymore??

  4. I suggest the Diggler Scholarship. The scholarship will go to a former student athlete who exhausted their athletic eligibility at least three years ago but is still attending UND.

Are there any limitations on GPA? I mean as in "cannot exceed" type limitations.

  5. OUR OPINION : The Kettering Bug and the humble origin of UAVs

Unmanned aerial vehicles' local prospects gained even more altitude last week with the news that Grand Forks will headquarter the federal government's efforts to patrol America's northern border with UAVs.

Congratulations to Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., and others for this dramatic upgrade in our regional mission. The change accelerates Grand Forks' emergence as a national leader in this amazing industry.

Speaking of which, let's take a quick look at that industry's ever-brightening near future as well as its somewhat checkered distant past.

Sounds like a good industry for Grand Forks and UND to be involved in.
  6. UND: Committee works to fine-tune president job profile

The search committee that will field candidates to be UND's next president debated Tuesday how to present the issue of UND's Fighting Sioux nickname lawsuit against the NCAA to presidential candidates.

Committee member Rick Burgum, president and CEO of Arthur Companies in Arthur, N.D., said he worries a draft job profile for the president's position overstates the importance of the nickname to the next president's work.

Whether UND's lawsuit against the NCAA is won or lost, North Dakota's State Board of Higher Education, not the UND president, ultimately will decide whether to retire or retain the nickname, said board president John Paulsen, also a member of the search committee.

Because the next president will have no authority to change or retain UND's nickname, Burgum said, he worries the profile might overstate his or her role in managing the controversy.

  7. This story caught my eye because UND's Greg Weisenstein is on the list of candidates for FGCU, as well as listed as a possible UND candidate. The story is actually about a wealthy businessman from Michigan who is also a candidate at FGCU. After reading it started me thinking as to what qualities UND is looking for in their next president. Obviously fundraising and research dollars are a huge part of todays presidents, but beyond that would you like to see from the next UND president?
  8. I saw this in the paper this morning and thought it pertinent as UND is looking for a new president.. Presidential paycheck

University of West Florida President John Cavanaugh has hit a salary bonanza.

Even as Florida universities struggle with shrinking dollars and frozen faculty and staff salaries, the UWF Board of Trustees has extended Cavanaugh a five-year contract that increases his first-year compensation package to as much as $464,250.

Making the deal more lucrative is the fact that Cavanaugh and his wife live rent-free in a university-owned home in downtown Pensacola. Their electricity and natural gas bills are paid for, the university covers his social club dues and he receives a substantial car allowance.

And, if Cavanaugh remains at the university for five more years, the deal becomes even sweeter, with the awarding of a $250,000 retention bonus.

"John is very highly regarded nationwide in the university system and has provided very solid leadership at UWF," said Board of Trustees Chairman Kenneth "KC" Clark of St. Pete Beach. "We didn't want to lose that."

In June, the 13-member board unanimously signed off on the contract, Cavanaugh's first since coming to the university in 2002. It extends to June 30, 2012.

UWF is a 40 year old Division II school that is transitioning from a commuter school to room/board type school. Beautiful campus in the woods 10 miles north of downtown. My property backs up to UWF, so I do lot of hiking in "their" woods.
  9. Alerus Center Tailgating fees

If you plan to tailgate at UND football games this year, you'll pay a fee. A pass reserved the Monday of game week will go for $7.50, and tailgaters will have to drop by the Alerus Center's administration office to get them. A tailgating pass bought on game day will cost $10. Season passes go for $30 for five games and up to three playoff games.

ALERUS CENTER: Yes, you will pay to tailgate

Rumors have swirled around town since news got out that Grand Forks' Alerus Center would start charging a parking fee for UND football games and other major events starting later this month.

Center executive director Charlie Jeske said he and UND officials have received worried calls from tailgaters wondering if the tailgating area will be moved or even if there will be any tailgating allowed. Members of official Fighting Sioux fan clubs have wondered if they now have to pay.

One of the issues with pay parking for the center will be dealing with Canad Inns customers, who mainly use the lot east of the hotel and entertainment complex. Alerus Center officials said Canad will issue parking passes to hotel guests, while customers of the hotel's bar and restaurants will probably get their parking fees reimbursed.

Some football fans, Jeske said, have discussed circumventing the parking fees by going to Canad Inn bar and restaurants before the game. But, he said, that's nothing the center can control.

  10. UND makes leap in time

UND made its move just in the nick of time. The Sioux are in their exploratory year in their five-year transition to NCAA Division I.

The NCAA this week announced an immediate four-year moratorium on accepting new Division I members.

The moratorium was enacted by the NCAA's board of directors and was endorsed by the NCAA Executive Committee Membership Working Group, a panel that is studying the association's three-division structure and its growth.

  11. When I lived in GF my parents took the family to Fargo several times a year. When we moved to Fargo, we never went back to GF. I'll have to ask my parents for an explanation.

I lived in GF pretty much all the way through college and the only time we really went to Fargo when I was a kid was for the UND/NDSU basketball games and even then we stayed at the Holiday Inn in Moorhead. Other than that Fargo was on the way to Mpls. Nothing against Fargo, it just wasn't a real draw for us.

  12. Grand Forks border patrol to get drone next spring

Grand Forks) GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) The new federal Customs and Border Patrol air branch in Grand Forks will start using a drone to patrol the northern border next spring.

Senator Kent Conrad says the first of four aircraft will arrive in Grand Forks around April 15th.

Conrad briefed border agents yesterday on a federal Homeland Security bill headed for a House-Senate conference committee.

A formal opening of the new northern border air wing at the Grand Forks airport is set for September 22nd. Conrad says it'll be an operational hub.

He says 85 agents will be added to help guard the 861 border miles in the Grand Forks district.

He says the southern border has some 12,000 agents, or about 12 times as many as the northern border.

  13. UND, like NDSU, has been a Division I school for years and just didn't realize it. I was skeptical when NDSU made the jump and if you go back in my past posts you can probably see a comment regarding that. Whether it was NSDU or the possibility of global warming that made UND move doesn't matter to me at this point. I'm just thankful that the move was made before the door closed.

  14. With UND going into the FCS, hopefully in the next couple of years they'll be playing some teams in the south. I'd love to take a little trip over to Louisiana to see a game.
