I think their fans who think the roster should be 100% Minnesotan (despite the fact they haven't won a national title since 2003 and their last 2 national titles don't happen without Thomas Vanek (Austria) and Grant Potulny (North Dakota) are dumb as hell, stuck in the past, and have their heads in the sand. The Gophers two best players in recent memory are from Pennsylvania and Arizona, at least IMHO, as they were better than Faber

Which basically means if you combined the Michigan approach and the Minnesota approach, you’d win national championships pretty consistently. But both of those programs get in their own way for different reasons, hence their title droughts. North Dakota should have the right mix every year, but the coaching and potentially some of the recruiting has dipped lately.

I think you need a balance of your top end stars in the Toews, Oshie, Boeser, Schmaltz type, but you still need your Cole Smith, Austin Poganski, Gage Ausmus type guys too. And you need to recruit the rare Caggiula types who have pretty high end skill for the NCAA level but grit/bite/edge/tenacity that few have anymore. Also, just recruit a top end goalie, I know they're hard to find, but c'mon on. Wonder if Jacob Fowler was not pursued hard by Berry and staff, or if he just wanted to stay east of Lake Michigan, in which he came down to Boston College & Michigan, obviously chose the Eagles.
