Was UND as much of a “hockey-first” school before the REA? Imo it got way more intense after the new rink got built. I also think D1 is a completely different animal than the D2 und departed.

As great as the new Ralph is, the old Ralph was a crazy, wonderful, right on top of the ice, type atmosphere with incredible fans each moment of each game. UND was hockey back then too!

    Give me your reason.

See the 2nd half of the Richmond game especially 4th Q when he needed to make passes and didn't. Yes WR's dropped a couple but he missed too many. He almost ALWAYS had one receiver he locked in on as they left the huddle; when that guy wasn't open, he ran.

No I don't believe he had the "it" factor. As many have noted here, the 8-0 BS run was very much D aided including the NAU game in which the D scored at least 1 TD if not 2? I don't recall.

I think he needs to find a QB willing to run a little bit when the play isn't open.  Kett can do it, but seems to stop running the deeper we get into the game.  In the 3rd quarter he could have made a couple first downs with his legs and didn't.

Though he made a really nice run before the Oliviera/Kett mishandled handoff in the first half.

I agree. We ran that blitz a few times and it worked great. If 3 guys make the tackle we aren’t talking about that play.

I do agree the first half we were lost on defense. Just by alignment they had us. They had a blocker for every guy we had in in the box. The running back doesn’t have to be great to get yards when that is the case. Even with the sets they got us in...it was our lack of effort that killed us the most.

It's the alignment that concerned me. Over and over again, we stuck with it for NO GOOD reason except that was the game plan.

If the kid makes the tackle like he's supposed to that play only goes for ten yards.

And if kids make catches, and if Oliviera gets his feet under him in the endzone it's a TD and if the line gives Kett a bit more time the play works, and if Santiago or Oliviera don't get tripped at the line of scrimmage and if …

How many times did their QB break tackles to get extra yards. TACKLING would seem to me, to be THE first thing a D coordinator focuses on?

That’s why I like the D....they take chances.  Taking chances is a risk. Risking is being aggressive. Being aggressive shows the fans you want to do what it takes to win. Winning is why they play

Sometimes you will “eat it” with being aggressive but it beats being conservative and non adjusting like the bore that is Rudy ball.

    FIVE FUNKING YEARS!!!!!!!!!!

Who is Rudy supposed to be aggressive with? The WR's who can't get separation or the ones who can't catch passes? Or should he be aggressive with a QB who is often running for his life?

I read a post in which someone said that he should have just ran the ball in the 4th. Great. When that wouldn't work we'd have had 90 percent of the posters say he ran the ball too much.

The D gave up over 350 yards in the first half and the offense actually played keep away for a good part of the half.  The Defense was better in the 2nd half but flat out sucked in the first.

And the best D in the first half was the crowd which caused penalties that kept them from scoring TD's on 2 possessions and instead they had to settle for FG's.

The D never gets critiqued. It's all Rudy. That's wrong. IF and I know it's a big IF, Kett doesn't F up a handoff to Oliviera, it's 21-6. Instead, immediately after, ONE RB goes 80 yards in 3 plays and it's a new game.

80 YARDS IN THREE PLAYS. ONE RB. SAME PLAY EACH TIME!!!

    But it's Rudy's fault.

I hope not, if he’s forced to make a decision. Bad things will only come of that. If the AD meets with a coach about what needs to be changed and he doesn’t like it. He’s the one that should make the change. If the coach doesn’t want to make a change the chances are his new choice won’t be better or won’t have a chemistry with the other coaches.

But it seems to play out that way for lots of coaches.

The D gave up 6 points in the 2nd half. They made adjustments. Although not perfect ....it was MUCH better than the 1st half where Idaho st was just shy of 400 yards.  Yet, the bengals made defensive adjustments late 2nd qtr and completely shut down Unds O from that point on.  I get it that Idaho st is known nationally for their defense  (maximum sarcasm )....but I was thinking und would be able to score double digits at home against them.   Rudy can’t adjust !!!!!!!!!!  FIVE FUNKING YEARS!!!!!!   Same damn thing over and over and over and over.

But that's my point. It took till the 2nd half (NOT THE 2nd QUARTER) fpr the D to make adjustments. WHY??? WHY couldn't Schmidt see the adjustments in the 2nd quarter????

I’m a pitcher of margaritas into it and I’ve decided I’m still a UND football fan (hockey second). I believe we can still win a national championship with Bubba as the head coach, but it won’t be this year. I believe we need to create consistency within the program and Bubba will give us that. He can coach here for ten more years but he’ll have some tough decisions after the season as to what his staff will look like next year.

He will be approached at season's end with a choice-make staff changes or the whole staff will be changed.

  11. I see the Rudy bashing, but when your D can NOT figure out a scheme to shut down a running game, and the QB can run OVER guys who simply don't know how to tackle, we NEVER on this site, ask for Schmidt's head.

    EVER

Why does it take till the 2nd half to make "adjustments"?

I got real tired of that toss play on Saturday also but in fairness the bomb to Izzy was a fake toss play action....

Fairness? Around here? When talking about the offense?

    Sorry, not allowed.

Cieslak got a paw on it.

There's a video out there of Bennett nailing the QB for a sack, but it was Cieslak who bull-rushed the lineman into the QB forcing him from the pocket in the first place. He had a nice game.

I am so absolutely proud of Bubba Schweigert and his football team (and belated happy birthday to him as well).

UND handled the challenge put out in front on them with maturity, confidence, and perseverance. Wow! What a job by everyone involved for UND!

Enjoy it appropriately, then put in the work and put it out there again for the home fans to enjoy during the Potato Bowl/Homecoming Game on September 22nd against Idaho State.

Very astute. I agree "Enjoy it appropriately" and let's pack the Al next Saturday.

You wanna see a iffy call that could have changed the game.

4th Quarter. 14:09 remaining. Santiego fielded the SHSU punt, but Personal Foul #39 for UND. Half distance to the goal.

He literally got called for blocking on the play half a second after the play was over (more like he was penalized for hitting too hard as the other player went flying).

I want to watch the game again. Is there a site that has it?
