The BEST thing about Midco is that it DOESN'T have Sweeney.

I disagree. It's an entire system at UND that values developing pro hockey players over NCAA success.
Minnesota had the same problem last year. Hard to focus on winning an NCAA tournament game when 5-6 guys are more worried about when pen to use when signing their pro contract five minutes after their season ends.
But if that notion is true, wasn't that system in place when Gino and Blais were winning titles? Lots of pros during those years too.
-
don't think Osbourne was there when Bohl was.
My bad, You're right in that it was Solich at the end when Bohl was let go. Osborne was there for Bohls first couple of years.
-
4 Frozen Fours in his first 4 years and one since. That may be tough to argue against.
And one might argue those were Blais' recruits too.
-
Sounds like I was wise not to go tonight.
-
I think Bohl would be considered, but IIRC he was let go by Osborne after some alum/admin pressure. Not sure how many of them are still there.

No one said it's the only draw, but the nicest arena AND 10000 great fans has to help.
I watched the Miami game in which they opened their new arena. They were so proud of what looked like the Scheels Arena in Fargo. It's a shell of the Ralph.
Its not idiotic or stupid to state plainly the facilities, fans and tradition are sold to guys being recruited. A UND coach who didn't use those things in recruiting would be idiotic or stupid.

Agree 100%. As it stands right now, Hakstol = Woog. That could change this year, it could change next year or it may never change. Hakstol has had everything you could ask for to win at this level. Facilities, tradition, institutional and community support, talent. When you have all of this and you cannot bring home even ONE NCAA title, it is completely fair to ask the questions being asked. Not saying we should fire Hakstol, but it is more than fair to criticize his game management and his "systems" (which he is married to at all times, no matter what the situation). Being objective does not make you a "bad fan" or "disloyal" or whatever.
Having said all that, Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Good stuff. I get why the supporters like Hak, I do. But those of us on this side of the fence are just saying that very good is just not good enough for UND hockey. He's been no better than Gino and he was similarly beloved, but it was time to go. Same for Hak.

I get the strong support for Hak and I said he's been a VERY GOOD coach, but yes, UND hockey fans may deserve to feel a sense of entitlement if only that a title can be expected at least every ten years.
I have NO CLUE who to hire, but I also stand by the strong draw the program and facilities are to any kid anywhere so I reasonably believe that whoever it is will succeed, and if after 10 years he doesn't get it done I'll call for a change then too. But it's not like he's been here a short time and hasn't been given a fair chance.
I know it's hard to win a title, but I'm also proud to be a fan of a team in which not winning a title in 10 years is grounds for a change.
-
Why is that idiotic? Why don't we seek more? Why isn't a title in ten years a requirement to keep your job? Who couldn't recruit to this program? What kid wouldn't want to play in this arena with that many fans?
-
He's a very good coach but no Championships is THE issue and UND expects championships. Maybe it's bad luck, bad mojo, bad karma, whatever, in the final analysis his teams don't get it done.
We aren't here to get to the Final Four. We are UND hockey and we seek titles. If the coach can't bring them we bring in a new coach.
As another poster noted, no one thought Gino (who won Titles) would be shown the door. Hak does NOT have Ginos record so this would not be unprecedented.

Oh I agree there are no guarantees, but as sports bets go, this is a good one though I'd guess they'd be a 2-1 favorite or worse.
Not sure what Bama was to start the season, maybe 4-1?
-
I haven't been on this board for a long time. One of my last topics was re: Jordan Parise who was off to Austria and I was disagreeing with those who were sure he'd end up an NHL goalie. Anyway, I agree that Hak has a great reputation and it would be a questioned decision if he was axed, but we expect National Championships here and he hasnt delivered.
Thus it's time. The next guy gets the benefit of recruiting to a great program and the best college arena in the country and we can't go without a title for any more years. Let's do it.

With A bye to start and home games after, where can I bet on the Fargo guys for another title?
-
If Pelini gets canned at Nebraska I could see the mutual interest for them in Bohl and Bohl in them, but Id be shocked if Florida seeks him. Also as a USC fan, I highly doubt Orgeron moves to FCS level if he doesn't become the head coach there.
I love the idea of an SU coach coming here. They know the recipe for success and recruiting to ND.

If anyone wants a short diversion from the game you can head to iTunes where I stumbled across a DAVE TIPPETT iMIX.
Not sure if that will help ease the pain but somehow I just can't imagine Tippett listening to Norah Jones.
We sure could use a guy like him this year
-
Hextall's a decent player. But yes, don't know about the top line for him. Toews I think they are trying to figure out where he fits in. He has only played 2 games. Defense should be a focus in practice this week... because it was awful in the third period. We don't have a brick wall in goal yet to bail us out like we did last year. Oh, and Miller needs to be more consistent if he wants to be in the lineup every night, i don't think he played well tonight.
I hate to be so blunt, but I have a better chance of scoring on the weekend than Miller does.
You can take that any way you'd like.

I am not one of those Sioux fans who typically blames everything on the refs, and I'm not now as this Bokal or Bakol whatever his name is called the WORST hockey game I've ever seen. To his credit both sides suffered. Wisco got whistled for phantom penalties and at the end of the 2nd, beginning of 3rd the Sioux got nailed with calls that wouldn't have been FOULS in a BB game. If the purpose of the WCHA to have 2 refs is to call every little touch then count me out. I'm done watching this crap.
On the other hand, a young Sioux team took a 3rd period nap and while the officiating sucked (the other Ref didn't call anything which is GOOD) the Sioux lost this one with weak d, no O and a lack of critical stops by the goalie.
Total team suckage that was only surpassed by a Ref that should NOT be doing Pee Wee games.
How did this bum get a WCHA job???
-
Really, lets not get silly, no one was suggesting throwing anyone under the bus in my section of the arena.
Yes but for some posters, if you don't effusively praise every Sioux player and in doing so compare them to Bobby Orr (defense) or Gretzky (forward) you ARE throwing them under the bus.
-
One need not be an expert to know that this out of the way Austro pro league does not produce very many NHL players. The fact that only one name has been mentioned proves my point.
The facts are there. To deny them is to deny reality.
And to suggest as one poster has that Parise may have had other offers seems incredulous. I need not be behind the scenes to suggest that IF he did have OTHER OFFERS wouldn't he have taken one of them instead of heading to Austria IF only because he presumably would know the road to the NHL has many paths but the one through Austria is seldom taken.
If at all.
But now I've grown tired of this topic.

Good point, Tim Thomas went from the NHL/AHL to the Finnish Elite League back to a starting goal tending position in the NHL.
Anything can happen.
Yes, you are correct, anything can happen. One day, while playing at King's Walk I could get a hole-in-one AND meet a Brazilian Supermodel who's got it bad for mid-forties single guys from small town ND.
Nonetheless, I HIGHLY doubt, given his skill set AND the fact that other NHL GM's have witnessed his skill set, that JPar is on his way to the NHL via Austria.
Or is it Australia? Same difference.

PA and Dubay had Johnny Pohl on the other day and said that playing in Europe is compatible with playing in the USA only that they pay for your housing. If that is true he probably got a better deal than he would playing for an AHL team.
If I remember right Brady Murray got a pretty good deal to play in Europe as well and he did in fact end up playing the NHL for a few games...
As I was typing my post above, I thought of Murray, but I do not know if he made it to the NHL or not. If so, it was as you say, a few games.
I didn't think Parise was an NHL caliber goalie when he was at UND and I still don't and I suspect if NHL GM's thought he was he wouldn't be shipping himself overseas.
-
I suspect Jordan P went to wherever he went because he actually CAN play there and even he acknowledges his limits.
Going overseas to play in order to come back to star in the NHL doesn't often happen unless your last name happens to be Forsberg.
Jordan P was a good COLLEGE goalie. That hardly ensures success in the NHL and there's no way he was every considered the heir apparent to Brodeur.

The way he's trying to incite the members makes me wonder....
breakin face = the "source"
Yeah, I don't know who he is, but the arrogance is a bit boring.
That said, there are SO MANY regulars on here who are SO SURE that ANY Sioux recruit will come in and replace the Sioux who signs early or on those rare occasions actually graduates that I swear the Sioux could say that I, a 44 year old lawyer is coming in next year and a few of the cheerleaders would immediately post something about "Shep will pick up some of the slack left by Oshie" that it's just so hard to take this place seriously most of the time.
Look I've been a fan for over 25 years, will always cheer for the team, but I've seen TOO MANY hot shots come in here who leave anonymously.
As for Kozek, seriously, what team thinks he's pro ready or is he just the next Travis Roche (PLACE ANY OTHER NAME HERE) who wiles his time away in the minors after leaving school too early?

My thoughts aren't based on one weekend, but on ten years. Plus is Western Michigan any kind of litmus test?
