I heard that Maag could have been used in red zone, jump ball situations vs. PSU - so hopefully he'll be able to suit up and contribute by Saturday. I don't know anything about Toivenen or Izzy.

360 guys suggested Toivonen could be back.

  2. This is a prediction not my hope, but …

Win or lose next week, Rudy is gone and Kostich is moved to some other part of the program. I believe he's a good recruiter and has value there.

Lose next week, and it's all over for this group of coaches.

If Golladay is the measuring stick for productive WR’s FYI

    Kenny Golladay’s first 2 years
    UND threw 827 times
Golladay-99 catches or 11.9 % of UND total
Golladay - 9 TD or 1.09% per UND throw
Golladay -1313 yds or 1.59 yds per UND throw
    Wanzek first 2 years
    UND threw 620 times
Wanzek- 77 catches or 12.42% of UND total
Wanzek- 8 TD or 1.29% per UND throw
Wanzek- 1015 yds or 1.64 yds per UND throw

    Very nice work.

Thank you for putting things into a proper perspective.

Any time you spend more than 33 minutes on the field and only give up 10 points I’ll take it.  Yes some missed tackles and I don’t understand why Schmidt waited so long to spy the qb, he was the entire offense.

They spent 33 minutes on the field because they gave up gashing runs by a QB that the coordinator didn't understand was killing us until the 4th Q and the times players had a shot at him, they couldn't make a freaking tackle.

The OL was absolutely atrocious today. When we needed a yard or two we got stuffed consistently.

Kett played terribly. He’s not a leader. He’s a doofus.

Rudy had one really nice drive called today. The rest was typical for him. That means he’s a bad as we all think. A good OC will exploit his roster to its fullest potential by creating advantages. He doesn’t, because he can’t.

Schmidt, we all knew we needed to spy the qb. What gives? Other than that the defense was pretty solid but again, pad level is a concern.

The lack of a spy on the QB is beyond belief. They had a 50% 3rd down success with ONE GUY SCRAMBLING THROUGH OUR D. Where's the spy?

  6. I didn't see the game last week, but was the OLine this bad last week? This is a huge regression from early in the year. Kett looked out of sorts all day. Bad decisions with some bad passes. Yes he was rushed and a couple times didn't even get to look at a receiver as the D was on him so fast. Still needs to do better, though.

What time will Playmakers open Saturday?

I think it's noon, but in light of the lousy service at the Tavern, why wouldn't they open at 11:00?

    Understood.

In general, in the context of this discussion, less weight towards UND connections and local ties and more weight towards previous success.

Again...makes sense so long as we don't ignore a candidate's UND connections.

As Ira mentioned, familiarity and ties should be a factor, just not the most important factor nor the deciding factor.

I’m not sure anyone can prove that such ties have not been used as the deciding factor in the past at UND, however. My initial post simply warned of this and asked for an emphasis on a fair evaluation process.

    I appreciate your sentiment here.

I replied only due to the use of the word "fair" as that is now the code word that gets my attention in this and any discussion. What's fair to one is not to another and fair is only fair if the individual thinks it is. It's subjective in a way that defies meaning.

UND is obviously only capable at hiring from within the family instead of the best candidate. No other way to explain Mike Mannausa as the new athletic director.

By the same token, lots of schools bring back former players to be in that department. Lots bring back former grads, coaches who have a familiarity with the school. Corporations do it too. Is that a bad thing really?

You do realize the GOBC is some guys who are self proclaimed insiders.  I don't believe in the tooth fairy but I used to get money if I lost a tooth and put it under my pillow.  Santa and Bunny are real and have more influence than the GOBC here and everywhere. The GOBC folks will be able to chat with decision makers if they donate a few thousand each year but then the decision makers move on, laugh about some of the stupid things they just heard and move on.  If you want the bartender to change the big screen to your game talk to the GOBC.  If you want to influence UND and the athletic department you need at least 8 figures and then you better now what you are talking about.  Sanford offered an initial $10 million with a promise for more for the exclusive Sports Med rights and UND passed.  Keep that in mind before you believe a few thousand a year gets you a "seat in the board room".

    "some guys"????

It's a guy on a forum pretending to have influence.

In the good ol' days a GOBC may have existed, but you hit the nail on the head here, money talks. However, I'd be careful to think that money influences who is hired as a HC. I do believe they want someone who will bring money to the U.

  12. 15. Other than the RBs, the O looks mostly intact coming back next year. Stanley and Aplin were solid though.

D takes a front line hit. Not easy to replace them and these pages have already had NG discussions, but it looks like the D loses only one LB Palmborg (Williams as a backup), one CB Harris so the LB and secondary look like strengths. Getting Ott back will be huge.

Which RS's do we expect to see take on larger rolls?

  13. I did not see one second of yesterday's game as I was in a sports bar in Fargo (after a wedding) that had SU on all TV's.

Can someone update me on injuries? Helgren, Wanzek, Maag. Who else and how serious?

I caution this. As per this thread's title, the staff needs new blood.

New blood = new ideas and new culture.

Freund is a great guy who bleeds green; however, the ideology of the offense and special teams needs to be changed from what it has been the past 5 years.

Bubba and Schmidt are tied in strategy/scheme so they come as a package.

FYI, I"m not saying Freund IS the answer at OC, but I think he could disagree with the O ideology but is stuck with it from above. He could see the team in a completely different light than Rudy and frankly, I believe he's a great recruiter too.

It was just an example.  But people that aren’t standouts merely average in one technical job can be absolutely outstanding executive in another and vice versa.

People are gifted differently and a good AD and HC understands that.

    True.

I think that we shouldn't discount the possibility of Freund doing well in a different roll. Can't blame a coach for being a team player so if he's following the OC's lead, he's not able to put out his own thoughts/techniques/ideas all the time.
