The school I used to teach at formed what was called an "Athletes Lifting" PE class. The problem was that too many kids considered themselves athletes, and they could only have this a period or two a day because the school I was at didn't have a bevy of PE teachers that could teach the class. This created a clogged up weight room with kids with different lifting routines, and not a lot has gotten accomplished since then. I would be in favor of allowing teams to have like a spring camp weekend during the school year. Where your Juniors and down can have a weekend of practices or football drilling together. Each team in North Dakota is allowed to do a camp during the summer for a week or so, but thats so close to the season getting going that its almost like an add on to the beginning of fall camp. Once again though, this would conflict with spring sports......

I've heard this as well. That he is kind of "the players choice" to be the starting QB, like Manke was a couple of years ago.

Pretty good points. I think if the Sioux lose to Sioux Falls again it may be the end of the Mussman era for UND football. I don't care if they are the national champions of NAIA football, you aren't supposed to get beaten by those schools. A Dale Lennon team would have never lost to an NAIA school. I think anything less than an 8 win season would be a disapointment. And please....lets stop someone on defense this year.....

I like the idea of spring football, but in North Dakota a lot of your football players in the fall are playing baseball, track or golf in the spring. With the size of the schools in North Dakota we have to have a lot of three sport athletes to keep some of the programs going. If I look at the high school football team in the community that I live in and go position by position, 95% of the kids are involved in a spring sport, and put their football pads away from November until August. With the addition of spring football I think you'd see the end of a baseball, track, or golf team because of lack of participation. But you are correct, we would have better football players.

I agree, but I don't see North Dakota becoming more competitive in high school football. I mean you watch a game on Friday night in North Dakota (even at the AAA level) and a game in California or Texas, and its completely different football. Part of the move to DI football meant that less and less kids from North Dakota would be seeing the field for the Sioux, and I'm still in the denial stage about this.... There are simply better athletes in Texas, Arizona, Missouri, California, etc. And if UND wants to schedule games against Texas Tech, Fresno State, Idaho, they'd better go out of state to get kids to keep the game close.

I'd love to see the gophers win by thirty, but I agree, it just won't happen. Brock Jensen is an okay QB for the Bison, but I don't see him pulling a Steve Walker against the gophers for the Bison. NDSU played just about a perfect game to beat the gophers at the dome, and the Gophers made a ton of mistakes (including a HUGE roughing the kicker at the end of the game). I'll say Gophers 24....NDSU 14. But its not an upset if the Bison beat them.

Not a lot of North Dakota/Minnesota kids discussed in this recruiting thread....guess its all part of being a DI football program. I'm going to miss the days when the Sioux had QBs from Cogswell.....defensive backs out of Red River High School.....great running backs from Washburn, and speedy little receivers from Bismarck.

I saw plenty of the pistol last year. The high school football team in the town I lived in ran that offense for their entire season.....and surprisingly only won two games because it seemed everything was a second or two off. So basically it was watch crappy offense on Friday.....watch crappy offense on Saturday....then Vikings on Sunday..... I would like to see the pistol holstered....
-
Agreed. To run the pistol offense you need the threat of a QB that can outrun an opposing defense, and UND didn't really have that last year. That and you have to make quick accurate throws which the Sioux didn't have either..... I wouldn't mind seeing the Sioux get back to more of a pro style formation going out of the shotgun once in a while to spread teams out a bit. With Solum at FB I think that gives them the opportunity to do more stacked backfield formations as well which sets up play action passes. Like I said, cautiously optimistic about this football season.
-
Thank God.....talk about watching an offense that looked forced the entire season. I think it was the worst type of offense for Jake Landry to run. He just didn't seem comfortable at all in the offense before he got hurt.
-
Agreed. The Sioux need to beat Sioux Falls by at least 30 points. They didn't just come into the Alerus and eke out a win, they were the better team in every facet of the game. Their QB made our QB look like a JV QB that day.
-
Cautiously optimistic about this years football team. Some big games on the schedule, but at the same time it sucks that you see a Black Hills State or whoever on the schedule as well. I know its still transition time, but I guess I thought the Sioux would be done playing NAIA opponents, even if it meant going on the road. I will say that the Sioux should not lose a game at the Alerus center this season. Which hopefully means they'll have an 8 win season. Any guesses on who the starting QB will be for the opener against Drake? My guess would be Goska being a senior, but I've heard a lot of positive stuff about Bradley. I'm on the bandwagon to have Marcus Hendrickson change positions. Maybe a move back to wide receiver? Showed last year he's probably not the right guy at QB, but a pretty good athlete and a playmaker.
-
Great....my 80% C- just went to a 70% F......depending on the grading scale......
-
Dangit.....Cichy and Bruno.....should have had those two.....I guess we didn't see those two numbers on the ice a lot last year....so thats my excuse....
-
Here we go!!!!!!!!!!! 5-Genoway 8-Martens? 13-Marvin?? 15-Davidson 16-Duncan 17-Gregoire 19-Trupp 21-Frattin 22-Malone 28-Bina?? I'm guessing I got a 80 percent.
-
Its funny that the NCAA hadn't mentioned that at all.... Hmmm.....a hockey tournament in a football stadium......who came up with that idea?
-
The ranking is kind of like when the Ralph opened back in 2001, and that team with all sorts of Freshman coming in was given a high ranking (might have been a top five ranking right away), and Dean Blais was baffled as to why his young team was ranked so highly.

Nice to see the Sioux pick up a North Dakota kid who will only get better with three years with the US Developmental program. A kid that I hope is on their radar is the Nelson kid from Williston. I've heard that he has been approached by Bemidji and Mankato, but hopefully the Sioux give him a serious look. He has two years of junior hockey eligibility left so he could play two years in Fargo and then head North. UND is all about four year guys, and I think Nelson would fit that quota.
-
I didn't think so. I didn't think they had played in the Everglades Classic that happens around the holiday season etc. I agree with what someone said earlier, I think the crowds have the possibility to be atrocious......If Denver and CC fans don't travel to St. Paul to watch their teams I'm guessing they won't travel to Florida. This would be the year too that a Fairbanks or Anchorage makes the frozen four too.....talk about playing a long ways from home..... If Fairbanks makes the frozen four they will be playing 4,743 miles from home....thank you mapquest!
-
Hmmm....question....Have the Sioux ever played a hockey game in the state of Florida?
-
This is quite possibly the post of the year. And at the same time its so true it hurts.......
-
You can't replace a guy like Genoway.......gosh I'm going to miss Chay......If its any of those guys my guess would be Dillon Simpson. He got a little bit of time on the power play last season, so it wouldn't surprise me to see him thrown into the fire.
-
+1 Completely agree. Guys like Malone, Trupp, Genoway, LaPoint, Frattin, Marto....you get my point. As Freshman they take their lumps a little bit, but by the time they are seniors you've got yourself a group of experienced hockey players who have been there done that.

The Sioux have been pretty blessed the past couple of years with defensemen that have been able to play forward (Marto, Gleason, Simpson) and Forwards that have been able to drop back and help out defensively (Davidson). I'm sure it will be no different this year. I could see Gleason getting his fair share of looks at forward this next season if he doesn't make the top six defensemen. I don't think we'll see Simpson play any Forward next season, as he'll likely be a top 4 guy on the blue line.
