A UND fan?  Yes.  A fan of the philosophy of the football team where they keep doing the same thing and expecting different results?  No.  Despite being second fiddle in town UND football has enough going for it where just being average should not be the expectation year after year.

Why would you cheer for a team you literally have nothing positive to say about? That's like being a Browns fan because you know it will piss you off and bring negativity into your life. Unless you played for UND or have a child on the current squad, I highly suggest you find a new team to follow because there is a very slim chance this team ever lives up to your expectations.

  2. My initial though is here is where you plug in someone with FBS type experience. Similar to what we got with Pawlak (who is a great coach) we look to find someone who has been hanging around FBS programs in some coaching aspect and maybe even played for one.

35-30 over last 6 years?  Yeah that's pretty much the definition of average.......but just wait til next year right?

If you know anything about taking over a program, you know that the first 2-3 years are a wash because what was there when you got there was not exactly what you want for your schemes and beliefs. Not disrespect, but it is not like Bubba took over Bama. He took over a hockey school's football program. We won a Big Sky Championship, which I consider the best overall conference in the FCS. Ya I know you are going to start on "the Mighty Valley", but look at the bottom half of the Valley. It's real bad. Look at your last ten comments, are you even a UND fan or just someone who comes on here to piss off true fans with negativity and moaning?

He will need an extension after this season, that's my point.

I bet they give him a very modest 2 year extension, then hand the reigns to Danny. With Schmidt gone, that opens the door for Danny to be hired in the near future, unless they open it up and someone incredibly impressive applies.

Yes a company should reward its employees and hire internally if those employees have made the company successful.  In a company that has underperformed by only being average, fresh blood is needed.

Average teams don't make the playoffs. That's what above average teams do. We beat Montana State this year, who willed themselves all the way to the Semi Finals. You really think we are average. This is a hockey school. We are fortunate to have a football program that is competitive to go along with it.

Brilliant selection by Bubba.  If he opens it up and brings in a fresh talented hire for DC he would be hearing calls for his job halfway through his next muddling 6-5 season.  Now with Holinka and Freund (and Bubba's contract) he has guaranteed himself another couple years since there is no viable in-house option to replace him.

False. I would say if Bubba decided to step down and they hired Danny Freund to be the HC few would complain......

Don't know but I believe we hired our WR coach for $40k if that is any indicator.

Unless we pay more than them it is hard to see anybody making a lateral move to come to GF without some personal tie to the area or the staff.

Isn't Bubba one of the lowest paid HC in the FCS as well?

don't get your hopes too high

Part of this is to keep our expectations on here in check. I haven't the slightest idea who I would hire, however, I won't be surprised if it is an internal promotion with a hire of a new defensive assistant. As far as outside hires, I wouldn't be surprised by Dosch or someone else with familiarity to the staff. It is hard to hire someone to be a coordinator that doesn't have a relationship with the current staff. That being said, don't expect a splashy hire.

Your typical assumptions are mind numbing.  Where did I say Satter was better than Klein??  Never did.

Did you see either Carrier or Belquist play over the past couple seasons?  Disn't think so.

I have watched both play in person. Two times for Bo, three times for Carrier. Very different players. I would say Bo can do more and shows a high level of athleticism. Whereas, Carrier is that "let's see what we can make you" type guy. Nice size, good vert, and hands. Seems to be a little too emotional when playing, whereas Bo is calm, cool, and collective. For what UND does, I like Bo. For what NDSU does, who cares about receivers because they will just continue to run power ha

You think Kava will play FB?  Certainly doesn’t have the frame to be a DL in college.  He’s 240lbs now and is bulky at around 6’.

Best high school player in the state IMO

Andrew Leingang out of Century is the best overall high school football player in the state at the time.

Miller is the best recruit in the area......he'll have a good shot to play on Sundays IMO if he progresses. The Barnesville kid and Anderson from Moorhead are a slight notch below. Those are the top 3. Klein is a great pick-up for UND but we'll disagree he's the top ND recruit. The Satter kid is a flat out stud. Kava from Shanley will be terrific at this level.  Carrier to NDSU and Belquist to UND are a wash.

I'm not huge on Satter. Undersized and didn't prove to be a true game changer at the AAA level in my opinion. I don't know enough on the Kava kid to comment on that one, but I know his brother was over hyped out of high school, but like I said I won't say anything there.

I will say the Miller kid is legit. However, I believe in the importance of recruiting local, but our Wisconsin, Nebraska, Illinois, and Minnesota recruits are MUCH more important.

I did list them by each school. Go ahead and see for yourself.

"The majority"…..no but the recruiting gap locally has not shrunk one bit since Bubba took over. One of Bubba's main points of emphasis when he got the HC job at UND was that he was going to get the top end local kids to want to come to UND to play FB. 6 years later how has that worked out? Better players make better teams. Not complicated.

Let's be real here: you can't live on recruiting ND/MN. I feel like Bubba and the boys have done a much better job recruiting locally then we have in the past. First and foremost, I Klein is my top recruit in the state. We snagged him. The top "local" recruit would be the kid from Barnsville and well he is going to Iowa State. I also know for a fact NDSU had interest in Bo Belquist and we have him coming our way as well. Those are my top two ND dudes and they are hawks. If we are talking ND and ND alone for recruiting, yearly there will be an average of 2-3 kids who can legit play FCS football, I wouldn't get too giddy on the locals.

  13. What in the world does this have to do with the 2020 Hawk Football Season? Frankly, I don't care how many time Zach Vraa broke his collarbone. Maybe this is why UND is struggling to be more than average. The fanbase is dwelling on some dudes collarbone.

I am not aware of that at all. If that was the case then why are combines so highly attended and athletes are looked at from a quantitative perspective? This is a dead end at this point, but Sheppard ran a 4.66 (officially) with NFL caliber training and as a senior fresh off a national championship. From some articles I read into, while sheppard was decent in the hands game he was ripped a bit for his tangibles and numbers he posted. Maag ran a 4.6 as a senior in high school. Would love to see his numbers now. Sheppard had Wentz throwing to him while we had Kett. From a tangibles side, Maag gets the edge. From benefiting from a system and QB ability, sure Sheppard looks appealing. Give Maag a few years, and I wouldn't be surprised if Scouts are calling Bubba.

Case and point, establish a meaningful run game and give the QB time to toss it up (with a better OL) and let Maag, and boltmann go get it. WR are not the issue we face this off-season.

Completely agree. I would say our QB, DL, LB, RB, and OL rooms are all more of a concern than our wide receivers. I know Danny did a great job with them and it looks like the new guy is following suit.

Based on personal available, they put the best 3 on the field. That's about as simple as it gets. They used the pass game as an extension of the run game and those were the three most sure-handed.

Toivonen and Maag both ran plenty of intermediate and deep routes that took the attention of the safety. They were able to do it more with their size and go up and get the ball rather than blow by them. Not what everyone is looking for but again, you do the best with the personnel you have. Maag has some pretty decent speed for his size. He will be a monster the next two years if he can continue to develop and work on his hands a bit, he had a few issues towards the end of the year.
Wanzek was an excellent route runner and had the quickness to get open to go with his hands.
Boltman added a dynamic element, though I wouldn't classify him as a deep threat. He just needs the ball in space. I think he will play an absolutely huge role next year. If only he was a more accurate passer, he'd be fun to watch taking over the offense next year.

There's some intriguing guys looking to fill in for the seniors next year:
Cochran has some pretty good speed
Schmidt is a sprinter/hurdler on the indoor track team
Burian and Zalvalney are local kids who are developing nicely and fit the size mold of Wanzek/Toivonen

Looking forward, I completely agree. Maag has to be the man. It is that simple. To compliment Maag, I do believe Zavalney will be the guy to step into Toivonen's role next year. Looking at him in warm-ups are during practice he definitely passes the eye team and did make some very impressive catches during fall camp. Cochran is something we have been missing for a couple years now. Good speed, good hands, and plays with a lot of emotion and grit, which is evident. Boltman and McKinney are hard for me to even call true WR's, as they show the ability to produce in multiple positions. Griebel is the guy I am looking to make a step up moving forward. He was rather highly touted coming to UND and I guess I would just like to know where he fits in.

  16. Coaches are assigned regional areas for recruiting in most programs I have been around. It's not like the DL coach only recruits DL, the QB coach only recruits QBs, etc. You have an area you scout hard and pass along who can ball and who can't.

Actually these things don't just "happen" to us - they are self inflicted.  And the short answer as to why is because Bubba.

I don't know whose fault it is that our OL is undersized. However, Knauf getting canned was a great move for this program. Literally, the only thing he had going for him was that he played for Wisconsin. There is a reason he isn't coaching anymore.....

You are correct about the facilities - we need Phase II soon.  However, as nice as it to think that us average fans can up our contributions and take care of it, the amount necessary is far out of reach for that type of funding.  The administration needs to stop alienating big pockets donors from Sanford to the Engelstads.  That's the only way it will get built.  This isn't to say there shouldn't be a drive to raise money from fans - it would help and give everyone some skin in the game and unite the fan base.

This lack of progress doesn't mean Bubba should get a pass.  Much of our misery has been self-inflicted and has nothing to do with Phase II - from 5 years of Rudy to our annual trip to Idaho State to our "light line" experiment to his game and clock management - these are all things under Bubba's control.  Just watch the second half of the Richmond game to see the staff in action.  Better facilities would certainly help with recruiting, but that shouldn't be an excuse for Bubba's coaching decisions.

This is a solid post. I think all of the things said about Bubba are valid points. My thought is, despite the glaring downfalls, he has seemed to do a nice job bringing in a quality staff to support him (correct me if I am wrong). I feel like for the most part we have solid position coaches who do a nice job working with what we have and putting players in a position to succeed.

Yea, I’m not talking about their resume, I’m talking about the eye test. At the beginning of the year they were struggling a little bit and they lost games when the qb was out, but by the end of the season they were absolutely rolling. That team was poised to make a run.

I agree with you on that one. I can't help but think of how powerful our offense would be if we focused on developing the run. Our offense is above average-good there is no way around that. However, if the line improves and Skokna keeps rolling and we find a complimentary piece to help him out (no not McKinney, he is a nice gadget player, but not what we need) we will be just fine against MVFC defenses
