I work in a career field that is incredibly competitive. I have 90-day Objectives and Key Results that I, and all of my colleagues, need to hit every quarter over and over. Yes, there is room for a bad quarter here and there. But there also are never two quarters in a row where my OKRs are at the same level.

In my job, I must continuously improve and provide value to our company and consumers. If I'm not hitting those targets, I'm out of a job.

Why is it too much to expect the same of a head coach? Chaves likely has set season OKRs for him. An injury riddled season is understandable, it's out of his hands. But he needs to be improving and reaching bigger targets. Just making the playoffs every year isn't progressing. Losing to ISU every year isn't showing improvement year over year.

Why do we hold our head football coach to a lower standard than someone working in the business world? Just because he is a nice guy and came from UND?

That is neat. Sounds like you work in a concrete, number based industry. Football is not that. Clearly Chaves sees something in Bubba because his success is directly correlated to his success in a way.

We do not hold our head coach to a lower standard than someone in the business world. The world of college football requires you to work 1-2 years for free in most cases. Did you do that for your high stress job? Coaching college football is a stressful job for, usually a terrible salary. Yep. Bubba gets PAID. However, he has worked to get there, just like most in college football and it takes time to get to any Head Coaching position. Your misunderstanding of people's work ethic, livelihood, and well-being is concerning. I know that's part of the job is taking criticism from people who have never been in the industry and never will, but come on man. No one is sitting there saying "You know you are above average, but we want better."

Remember when we had a future FBS head coach apply for the job and they lost out to Bubba?

No, UND isn't getting a current FBS coach to head to GF, but to say UND should be happy with Bubba because it's not a destination school is crap. Get a coach on the rise instead of collecting a series of seasons just good enough to make the playoffs and then lose.

So you let someone go who is doing an adequate job because there is someone out there who might do better? Man I don't know what you do, but if you get canned tomorrow and you boss says "We like what you do, but we just feel there is something better out there". I hope you take it with humility, because that's what your asking Chaves to do. To bring it all in remember, the coordinators and assistants do 99% of the work and that's at any program. The HC is simply a personality and for North Dakota Bubba fits that.

Heck of an athlete. See him making some big plays this year.

I hope you are right! The way I look at it UND needs one of the two Local PWO kids to pan out (Zavalney or Overby). Would be interesting to see what others think of who will rise up out of these two local guys or if both will.

  4. I've been saying that to myself for years. Until NDSU shows a slight sign of slowing down, I just going to keep telling myself they will continue to dominate to not let my expectations get in the way of current reality.

I don’t think there is much NDSU envies of UND right now. It is up to UND to change that on the field. Fall 2020 is the next opportunity.

Until then, these “but we got this player and NDSU didn’t” arguments are petty at best.

Never used the word envy. The gap is still gigantic, but let's be honest, the gap is gigantic between the entire FCS and NDSU. I do believe UND is closing the gap, but we are still 5-10 years away from being competitive with them unless something unexpected happens. As a UND football fan, we need to take every "win" we can get, because when competing with that juggernaut, they are going to be few and far between.

    Definitely agree.

    • Running Back: If things break correctly, this could be a really fun group. To me all eyes are on Weah. If he can remain eligible, this group could be very fun to watch. Mitchell being on campus is big too. The more I think about it, this group could be much better than last year. JJ is a big loss, but he was basically the only Senior that played.
    • QB: Being the most important position by far on the field, it's strange how optimistic I am. Put me in the camp that thought Kett was above average last year, so I'd be surprised if this group was better than last year. I'm confident with three talented arms on campus that one will step up.
    • Wide Receiver: These skill positions I'll always feel like you can have guys step in and get the job done.

Between RB / WR you lose three key contributors and virtually no depth, a lot returning from those groups.

As far as RB goes, I really don't think we can look at JJ as a huge loss, I know the line was subpar last year, but let's be real special backs make something happen and he really didn't create any opportunities for himself. Gee was "meh" and I see him as our 4th most explosive weapon in the backfield. Looking for Skokna, Mitchell, and Weah to make up the RB position next year with Gee spelling when need be.

Quick thoughts on some position groups before Spring Ball.

    • Better than 2019 - Same reasoning for all four groups, they return so much.
      • Offensive / Defensive Line
      • Secondary
    • Biggest Concern
      • Linebacker (Both ILB/OLB)

Most other groups QB / RB / WR / TE would probably trend a little closer to the "worse than" column than the "better than 2019" column, but right now it's really hard to say. I'm such a big believer in the lines playing such a crucial part that significant improvement (which I do expect), can go such a long ways.

I really think QB/RB/WR will all have guys step up and we won't lose much as far as production. However, TE scares the sh*t outta me right now.....

Probably. But they may be ok with the TE from Wisconsin they signed instead of Klein. And perhaps they think the Terhark kid from WF Sheyenne and Satter from Davies are better than Belquist, which is not far fetched idea.

They obviously think there are kids they evaluated this year that are worthy of an early offer. I don’t think they are worried about UND stealing in-state kids that NDSU wants. Look at which school has more ND kids contributing for them. I think NDSU is getting any ND kid they think can contribute.

I'm sorry, but this is a terrible take.

1.) I'm sure NDSU does enjoy their TE from Wisconsin, however in their offense they need 2-3 per class to develop, so I'm sure they would have loved Klein if they had a shot at him.

2.) Terhark is a walk-on. They clearly don't think they world of him. Satter will play D at that school in Fargo, so he isn't comparable to Belquist in this situation.

3.) They are worried about UND snagging in state kids who can compete. As you stated yourself, "Look at which school has more ND kids contributing for them. I think NDSU is getting any ND kid they think can contribute." If that changes, which it is startly to slighty shift, NDSU starts sweating a tad.

I see Burian as a sleeper at WR. (Call him a poor man's Wanzek.)

Lennon is at DE. He's a big body and solid BB player (hands). Why not at TE? Or is that because the kid from Mandan is the future TE?

See and I know Burian has the speed, but everytime I go to practice he drops numerous passes. They love Lennon on the DL so he won't be going anywhere soon. Watch them flex Zavalney to TE when they need an athletic look.

I don't get the warm fuzzies looking at the roster.  Reading the puff piece helps a little, but I am a little worried at this point.  We need a bunch of good things to go our way this spring into fall camp.

    1. need a Stud QB to emerge

    2. Will Otis be eligible?  That would help a lot at RB.  Small and quick, potential game breakers.......but most teams have game breakers at RB.

    3. At D-line.  Is bigger big enough?  A lot of unknowns, but some should break in a good way.

    4. Excited about Ventrelli at 300 lbs, super athletic out of High School.  Can Hergel, Tobin, Nguon, Waletzko make us pretty tough up front?

    5. Can Krzanowski make the jump and be productive at LB?  We have an interesting mix of old and new at LB.  Rastas bulked up to 2010 with a 5lb weight in his drawers.  Geier is off the roster, what a disappointment he was.

    6. Corners look to be salty

    7.  Hopefully the new kid helps at Safety, Wilcoxen.  Koshiol runs well, too.

    8. WR - we look pretty bad or should I say thin here.  Maag......Brockstar..........................Cochran.........then pretty much crickets after that.  Tough to run 4 wide with 2.5 proven wide-outs.

    9. TE's suffered the Rudy Hangover last year.  I know we are high on Riviere.

Super Stud Game Changers - Maybe Jaxon Turner, Evan Holm

I just don't see the high end game changers.....  We'll see what Spring Ball looks like!!

I completely agree with you. I think our transition into the valley will be very until and tough to tell where we sit until we play the games. I do feel that those bottom end Valley teams and very poor, where last season we didnt have many "incredibly bad" teams on the schedule. Ya ya I get it the top end Valley teams are good, but take the Bison out of there and it's a slightly above average conference. I think WR will be fine. Maeg is a legit NFL. Cochran will be a legit shifty dude we have been missing in the past. Watch for Zavalney to step up be that missing piece. 360 guys like him and they have intel we don't. That with the 4-game freshman rule and we will be fine. I do agree with you though. All in all, we aren't very deep.

interesting how NDSU is offering North Dakota kids really early this year, like months earlier than last year.

Guarentee they are still pissed off about not getting Klein and Bellquist.

So who gets their redshirt pulled?

    Quincy Vaughn?

    Creighton Mitchell?

    Marcus Preston or Jack Wright?

    Someone else?

Obviously, this is all based on speculation, but at this point of the year it is something, football related, to talk about.

Personally, I'm really excited to see Creighton Mitchell. Sounds like he has some serious speed, and hopefully the O Line can make some room for him. Hoping Vaughn can impress too. I'm sure there are some others. Just interested to hear what everyone thinks...

I agree with this. In my opinion, Vaughn and Mitchell have the best chance offensively to get their shirts pulled, due to those being two spots we are somewhat lacking depth. The only thing with Mitchell is he may be very similar Skokna, which isn't a bad thing, but would allow the staff to keep him at or under 4 games. I don't see any wide receivers having their shirts pulled. They were able to keep Cochran and Zavalney another year by not red shirting them and I believe they will end up playing a good amount with Maag and Boltman next season.

Defensively, I would say Agyekum has a decent shot to not redshirt. His hips are quick enough to play D1 football already and well you can never have enough DBs.

  13. As much as I enjoy when UND is at the top of these lists, they are hard to put a ton of stock into. Remember, one of the highest profile recruits UND has brought in the last five years was Zeke Ott and well as unfortunate as it was, it didn't pan out. You can never truly know who will flop, get hurt, or transfer.

I agree that Schuster did a good job when he came in against SHSU and was very poised for a true freshman.

I realize it is a very small sample size but his game stats don't stand out when compared to our other QBs last year.   Both Ket and Zim had higher QB ratings and completion %.

In my mind he has an advantage based on his time in the program and the word is he was great in practice but I don't think he is a lock based on last year.

All in all, I think in the end they will bring in a JUCO or Grad Transfer to be the starter. If that isn't the case, even though they are young, it still isn't a terrible situation. Competition is always a good thing and there hasn't always been a ton of competition at that position in the past.

This...….7-4 next year is best case scenario IMO. 6-5 is most probable. UND just has a history of pissing away a game they shouldn't lose year in and year out..

They also won two games they maybe shouldn't have this year and almost beat a Weber team on the road they shouldn't have came close to......

We do??????  May be Lakes---but not the rest of us.

Ya I am far from an NDSU fan, but I don't think the MWC is something NDSU wants a part of. That conference has really lost some clout if you ask me. Boise is your top dog and they are no where near the current FBS playoff format. This maybe gets NDSU some intriguing non-conference games and a gator bowl yearly, but that's not what Bison fans want. Let's also remember, there are more sports than football that would have to more over......

What do you think- Is it time for NDSU to move their football program up to the next level now? 8 championships in 9 seasons at the FCS level... this question will certainly never go away. Even James Madison is looking at moving up (joining the AAC), and they have nothing on the NDSU program.

I know this article is from July, but still completely relevant.

    https://247sports.com/college/north-dakota-state/Article/brake-fbs-question-133770261/

In my mind, it really doesn't make sense for NDSU to move up to any conference, but the BIG10 and they know that. They also know that competing in the BIG10 would be incredibly difficult for them in all aspects of the move. I do see the argument for the MWC, but at the same time, even if they dominated that conference, which they possibly could, the ceiling there is low and they would never be National Champions ever again.

  18. When you put something out there like best "QB Coach in the Country" it is pretty black and white. If he isn't the top guy I would want on my staff to coach lead the QBs, he is not, in my opinion, the best in the country.

  19. 18 minutes ago, JohnboyND7 said:

Idk if he is the best or not, but his qb's have done rather well. If you can do better, I suppose you owe it to yourself to do it!

His QBs have without a doubt been the best in the FCS. There is no argument about that. I think we often forget there are 130 FBS out there that have some legit coaches. I know I know "BuT tHe BiZoN bEaT fBs TeAmS", I still believe if he was that great of a QB whisperer he would be in the FBS or the NFL.

So, when does a FCS or a FBS school looking for a HC come knocking on Tyler Roehl's door?

Lol ok fan police.  You should be in charge of UND Football advertising campaign....."Middle of the pack keeps Bubba coming back"

Well I am just saying click on your profile and go look at every single one of your comments. Literally every comment you post is negative. When was the last time you said anything positive about UND football?

  23. My opinion: Dosch is old. We talk about how being able to recruit plays a huge factor in this, well kids these days want to play for "cool" young coaches. Bubba knows he is the old "old" dude on staff and that his best days are behind him. He needs to set the program up for what he thinks will help most in the future, regardless of past experience at times.
