  1. Padron Chile has now closed in Grand Forks after being open for less than a year. I admit being late eating there, but really enjoyed my visit a few weeks ago. Any takers on opening a Vinyl Taco type of establishment?

  2. Bismarck already has a Northwoods team coming in 2017, NAHL, and now in the running for an independent basketball league. TRF is scheduled to get a junior hockey team. Why has there not been any discussions about Grand Forks being home to a non-college team? The city has 3 large indoor sport arenas and Icon Center, all of which could use another tenant.

As a fellow Gamble Hall grad, I could not agree more.

Showcase it as a centerpiece of campus (Which I know is difficult because of its current location and surroundings).

Would there be enough room to the east across the street to add on a 3-level addition of some sort and connect it with an overhead hamster tube?  I can't recall off the top of my head.

I also am a CoBPA grad and loved Gamble Hall. Perhaps they can tear down the former Alumni House to the north and use it for a small expansion area. There is also plenty of land to the east between Gamble and the library, but that is such a nice walking path.

Uh ... Don't you have to be an NCAA member to if your end goal to play NCAA hockey? Shouldn't they be making the move to leave the NAIA for the NCAA? Shouldn't they be talking to the (already bloated for membership) Northern Sun to have an NCAA home?

Who says they are not already? They could also go D3 and play in the 13 team MIAC conference (yes they are not a Minnesota school, stranger conferences exist)

Living in Jamestown, and being a graduate back when it was Jamestown College, the growth the campus has seen, and the number of buildings that have sprung up, definitely leads me to believe something is up for the future. I can't see them developing this to stay at the ACHA level.

However, the hockey facilities themselves need a vast improvement in order to make that kind of jump, in my opinion.

I hope they do it, it would be fun to have a place to take the kids for some higher level play, outside High School hockey.

Newman Ice Arena has a nice ring to it :)

  6. The U of Jamestown Hockey program is really starting to get organized with 13 players already signed.  2016 will be their first year as an ACHA DI Program, with all other sports still at NAIA. Any thoughts on the potential for athletics to become NCAA D-3 or perhaps D-1 in hockey a few years down the road?

Here is Boise State, sport by sport, in 2015. I'd bet most school's athletic departments look that way, namely, one or two programs "in the black" and all the rest "dead red".

Thanks for this and two thoughts came to mind. 1) Boise State only has 16 teams and they are FBS and a major university. Puts into perspective the 21 sports at UND 2) Hard to believe women's basketball lost $813,000 for what is likely the most popular women's sport. Eye opening

Plus, what is the cost of a full schollie for a student-athlete from Europe?

Likely the same as a domestic one. The cost of a student is fixed, no matter from North Dakota, other states, or another country.  The only difference is, ND kids get a discounted rate instead of the full cost required.

That's pretty easy.  18 schollies vs 13 schollies.  Idalski makes more than Jones.  Men buckets get paid for guarantee games.  Whockey gets nothing.

I'm sure equipment and facility cost also play a part

Great group of games at the Ralph yesterday with more on tap today.

1st 2 games were close all the way through with USA finishing strong winning 8-2. Post thoughts on any aspect of the tournament from atmosphere (was terrific yesterday) to games/anything in between.

I plan on attending tonight's Canada match, but photos from the Herald seem like a small crowd for yesterday's USA match. However, lot of cool pictures on Instagram are floating around.

Walton leaving means that they can easily give Peter Johnson a raise when his annual review comes around since he'll be assuming duties.

My position on Campus was in a new department established to provide customer service and help student navigate UND's large, bureaucratic system. Many other schools have this department because it improve retention and satisfaction. We actually keep data to back that up. The department will continue to exist because of restructuring, but it was gutted. I don't feel that I was being cut to make the institution better. It was purely a cost-saving method to maintain the jobs of people who have been at the institution longer. But, then again, another person being cut along with me was at UND for 13 years. Another was at UND for several and held prominent positions in lower administration.

I remember talking about this with a friend of mine in December and January; I was a little worried, but she suspected that there would be cuts to travel and some other line items. I don't think anyone expected this. I also think there are going to be more cuts the next fiscal year as well.

I'm sure some people think UND is simply cutting the fat, but I think this is a whole lot deeper than that. I'm telling my story because I want to put a small voice to the cuts. I'm going to miss UND. I have many friends who work there and they are wonderful people. I don't feel as if I got the opportunity to make the impact that I wanted to. I gave UND my money (tuition), my sweat (working various positions on campus) and now my tears. I have nothing left to give it.

Thanks for the personal story. I just shows behind every cut is a person and a life being affected. Best luck finding another position.
