I looked into falconry awhile back, very cool but lots of work.. keeping hawks or falcons puts owning a dog to shame as far a time commitment goes. Still, I think to have an actual hawk as the mascot would be loads better than a guy in a fursuit, and possibly UND could use said hawk or hawks, to educate the public on wildlife conservation. Not sure what the cost would be or if the Bio department already keeps live animals, but I would rather see the university pay for that than flush more money down the toilet on out of state firms creating more designs.

So actually as far as owning a hawk goes, it depends on the state and the Species of Hawk. You can't just own one as a pet, but if you have a Falconry license you are allowed to trap and keep a Hawk or Falcon, or other raptors for the purpose of hunting. I know in Minnesota Apprentice falconers are allowed to take and keep Red-tailed Hawks, while Master Falconers can keep Red-tailed Hawks and Falcons. Now there may be different rules for institutions, UND does offer majors in Wildlife Managment, presumably, this means that the biology department would be able to keep animals that could serve both educational and mascot purposes. Both the Ferruginous Hawk and Swainsons hawk are found in North Dakota and could offer an opportunity to salvage something more regionally unique out of an otherwise bland nickname.

Not that it really matters anymore but my Prefered nickname options 1. No nickname 2. Nokota 3. Rough Riders 4.Aero's/Raiders -anything that could be given an aviation theme 5. Nodaks 6. Flickertails(Only if Conker could be the Mascot) or Fighting hawks . . . 100099. Sundogs

I doubt the stupid fursuit will cost that much, still in a time of budget cuts you have to question how they are doing this mascot thing. It seems like they are making the same mistakes they made with the Logo, farming it out to some focus group BS firm in Ohio, instead of using the in-house resources the university already has. Or how about just shelving this whole thing till the budget situation is better? Why spend money on something extra when we have had to get rid of three programs already.

Doesn't surprise me that a lot of the faculty hate Kennedy, too many of the Liberal Arts and Social Science faculty are so leftist that they hate anyone to the right marxism. I once when into a professor's office in the English Department, she had a picture of Karl Marx, like some Catholics have pictures of Jesus or people in North Korea have pictures of the Kim's.

I'm kind of sad that we didn't go with Flickertails we could have just worked out something with rare entertainment and used Conker as our logo and mascot.
