Has anyone here in this forum been out to Colorado Springs to watch the Sioux? If so, could you tell me about some Sioux-friendly bars/restaurants or hot spots around Colorado Springs that might be of interest?

I'm also curious to know of any good hotel recommendations for the trip. I'd most like to stay where the team is staying (if anyone knows of that location) but am open to other suggestions.

The dynamic of the trip will be three die-hard Sioux fans and me--a Gophers fan that will be there for the love of college hockey and to spend time with my dad. Two young guys and two old guys total.

Anyway, let me know what you think.

Thanks,

Jeff

i went to the west regional 2 seasons ago when we lost to DU after outshooting them 1000 to 10....as you can see i have forgotten about this great game :glare:

cc was ok, they did a crappy job promoting the regional so there were seats open everywhere so the atmospere sucked, but i would guess a true hockey weekend involving CC will be much better..im not sure on the bars all around as i hit up one right by the arena and drank before and after all games..i think i also hit up a chicagos pizza/bar which was downtown..pretty cool area...

also the team stayed here at the Antlers Hilton

heres a weblink for CC and any other school..have fun..may be out there as well!!

Me and some buddies went out there last year for the Gophers/Tigers series and we thought it was a fabulous trip. I've made each WCHA trip sans AA, and this one ranked near the top of the list for me. The area around the arena is very good for roadtrips, since there are a few restraunts (Outback, some Italian grill place, and a few others) within walking distance. Plus there are 2-3 hotels right next to the arena as well. I believe there's a Doubletree and I know for sure there's a La Quinta which was pretty nice and you can't beat the price (about $60/night when we went). There's also a Target and a strip mall all in that same little area.

We drove towards Pike's Peak one day and there was a lot of cool photo ops and light climbing type things to do along the way. The city of Denver is only about 45 minutes away so you can scoot up there for fun stuff to do as well.

Also, typically flights are about 1/2 the price if you fly into Denver as opposed to the Springs, so look into that. The drive in scenic to the Springs from Denver and the speed limit is 75 I think, so it's worth it if you can save the money.

Arena is okay, nothing special.

Compared to the REA--is anything special?

We don't need a palace on the prairie. We have the mountains to break up the horizon. Which explains why in Colorado, you can't stand on a five gallon bucket and see the back of your head. :glare:

The 75 MPH speed limit is there, but depending on the time of day you won't even approach that.

A short day trip might be to the Royal Gorge bridge. This is the highest suspension bridge in the world. If you're afraid of heights do not go.

Also a trip up Pikes Peak could be in order, but you are at the mercy of the weather more with Pikes Peak. Even with the temperature being 40 below what it is in Colorado Springs, it could seem like a heat wave for the hearty types from North Dakota.

All good advice as there are plenty of hotels and restaurants around the arena. In addition to the La Quinta and higher end Antlers there is also a Marriott Residence Hotel if you like to have your own suite to relax in. Old Chicago's is great if you are a beer drinker as their selection is second to none and their pizza is decent. In addition to the previously mentioned restaurants, I believe there is a Chili's in the same parking lot and a short drive towards the mountains and there is a Benigans and a Macaroni Grill on your left. Colorado College is extremely small, about 1500 students I believe, so if your are looking for more night activities you need to make the one hour drive north to Denver.

My wife and I went to the games last year. We used priceline to get our hotel room. We paid $65 a night and stayed at the Antlers Hilton. The hotel is a short drive from the arena but puts you close to the downtown which is full of small restraunts and bars. Before the games, it seemed like a lot of fans gathered at an Applebee's near the arena.

Personally, I enjoy going to the Denver series as they have a nice arena without any bad seats. I am looking forward to this year's series more than ever now that there is a little added fire from the events of last year.

Both CC and Denver arenas have lots of Sioux fans for the games.

When is that series? Royal gorge is a must see, I would take the train up Pike's Peak if it still is running. It has to close do to the large amounts of snowfall they get in the winter.

Actually, they now do a good job of keeping the train running close to year round on weekends and you can find the schedule here:

Panino's Downtown is the place to be before a game although it will be filled with a large amount of Tiger fans. It is run by someone in the Sertich family and they have an outlet is Roseville, MN as well. Great food, great pre-game atmosphere.

If you're the gambling type, Cripple Creek is just a couple hours away. Small mining town with a number of casinos. Large factory outlet shops just north in Castle Rock. The Air Force Academy is probably worth seeing if you got nothing better to do.

I believe that Tony Frasca (1950 CC NCAA Champ Team) started the Panino's chain and I seem to recall hearing that he is Sertich's grandfather. If you are going up to Cripple Creek don't drive the road at night or after a few wobbley-pops. Either use one of the casino buses or make it an overnight activity

I don't know of any places to hang out down there, but there's lots around that area.(If I hear anything, I'll be sure to pass it on). It's really gotten built up. I think you have a pretty wide choice of hotels. I stayed at one about 10 years ago that was $130 per night and as others have said, there's cheaper too. As for the game atmosphere, it's usually excellent. CC has some die hard fans and it's usually pretty full. I agree that the arena is nothing spectacular otherwise..

I try to get to either CC or DU when the Sioux are in the state, and have just moved down to Colorado Springs from the Denver area. There are usually a lot of Sioux fans at these games but we could always use more! The only wildcard is the weather as for taking in the local sights. Never know what it will be like in Feb at any given time. Might be tough getting up into the foothills..

I'm considering making a trip up to ND myself, probably next season after I've accumulated some vacation time. I guess it's pointless to ask if there are any Sioux-friendly spots up there! Can anyone tell me if it's difficult at all to get tickets, or find places to stay up there, and if there's any tips for a good time? I haven't been up that way in a really long time and would have a blast being where Green is the majority..

We went to the regional in 2004. Flew into the Denver airport and rented a car. It was a nice drive to Colorado Springs that took about an hour so don't be put off if you want to save some money and fly into Denver.

Colorado Springs is a very narrow and long town and the World Arena is on the south end of town about 4-5 miles south of the downtown area. There are only two hotels near the arena but both are easy walking distance to the game. The closest is La Quinta Hotel where we stayed. It's a basic hotel but has no bar or restaurant. The second hotel is the Doubletree where the visting team usually stays. They have a bar and restaurant.

There is an Outback across the street from La Quinta and there is an Italian restaurant called Carrabba's Italian Grill. We spent all of our drinking time at Carrabba's. Real small bar but easy to fill up with Sioux fans.

Things to do:

- Take a drive to the top of Pikes Peak. It is a little scary once you get above the tree line but you need to do it at least once. When you get down stop at The Wines of Colorado which is about 1/2 mile towards town from the Pikes Peak exit. They have a lot of wines and you may need a drink after your scare on Pikes Peak. Plus they have very good food.

- Walk or drive through The Garden of the Gods. Very picturesque and interesting place.

- Go up to Seven Falls. This is a waterfall that is literally about 10 minutes from the World Arena. Very nice http://www.sevenfalls.com/

- Stop at the Broadmoor hotel and walk aroudn the grounds/golf course and take a peak at the old hockey arena.

- Go downtown and drink and eat at one of the Irish pubs.

- other things: Cripple creek for gambling, Royal Gorge for the view, Glen Eyrie castle.

One last note: When we got to the arena to pick up our will call tickets there was a young guy wearing a Gopher shirt standing in front of us. I think we said something about Gopher fans being so stupid that they didn't know Minnesota wasn't playing in this region. He was actually there to buy circus tickets. What a dumb a??

Actually, there are now several hotels that are in the same parking area as the arena including a Marriott Residence Inn.

If you saw the old Broadmoor World Arena when you were out here for the 2004 Regionals I want a shot of what you were drinking because it was demolished in 1995. I know that for a fact because it also used to house our curling club when I was living there. :glare:

Gees I'm just trying to help out a little. I didn't see the old Broadmoor when we were there in 2004 but I thought it was because we didn't know where the hell we were going. Now I know I wasn't smoking something and it really wasn't there.

Of course I didn't know about any new hotels since I HAVEN'T BEEN THERE SINCE 2004. :glare: I was just recapping our experience.

No big deal I just thought I'd respond.

Oh, I see what's going on here...it's the old "confuse the Gophers fan while he's in Colorado Springs by telling him to go to a bunch of places that don't exist" thread.

Now that I've scratched off the Broadmoor as places to see, is there really a Pikes Peak?  :glare:

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Yeah, but it's not that impressive. Looks a lot like the old toboggon hill at Lincoln Park.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

At the expense of being called someone not able to recognize a tongue in cheek comment---here goes.

I'm not familiar with the toboggan run @ Lincoln Park, but if it drops from over 14,000 feet to just over 6000 feet I definitely want to attempt that ride.

But....since the highest point in No Dak is ONLY 3,500 feet (officially, 3,506) I realize that 6 feet is probably discernable and important to people that live at about half our altitude here in Colorado Springs.

The top of any toboggan run in Minnesota or North Dakota starts at an altitude well below the end of our toboggan runs.

There is NO way that Pikes Peak is a toboggan run.

BTW: There are over 50 mountains higher than 14,000 feet in Colorado, but none get the same coverage as Pikes Peak. Look here: http://www.toppeak.com/map.html

There was something I remember from marketing class, "If you think marketing doesn't count, remember this: There are more than twenty mountains higher than Pikes Peak in Colorado....name one."

  • 4 months later...

I am heading there with some buddies, we are flying out of MSP into Denver. But we are going to be staying with some friend in the springs. We are trying to get tickets for the Sat noon game between the AVS/RED WINGS (GO WINGS) game. That will kill Sat. afternoon.

GO SIOUX!!!!

My plans sound pretty much the same except I'm flying into Colorado Springs out of MSP on Thursday. A buddy of mine in Colorado Springs hooked us up with Redwings/Avs tickets for Saturday afternoon (center ice, 11 rows up!!!!). Topped of with tickets to both Sioux games. What a weekend it will be.

Our group will be staying at the Residence Inn (the one that's close to the arena). We get there Thursday afternoon and are leaving Sunday morning. I doubt will go to Denver...seems like it should be a separate trip. Any ski resorts in the Colorado Springs area? Maybe that could be my Friday afternoon. (Then spend the rest of the weekend in the hospital)

I'll preview the CC team this weekend while I watch my "goofers" battle with them for second place. I don't think either team is as good as they think they are.

Here is one link that may help: http://www.coloradoski.com/

It depends on your definition of "area" but there are no "real close" ski areas to Colorado Springs. Lift tickets at Monarch are around $50

Monarch is the closest ski area to Colorado Springs. The altitude is fairly high, and they have some pretty good snow fall this year. The temps are not out of the "normal winter" range for you North Dakota residents.

Good luck.
