SWSiouxMN Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 UND had a forgettable roadtrip last weekend, needing a buzzer beater to survive SUU and was denied one at NAU. They look to turn the page to this week as they only play once against travel partner UNC. The Bears season was virtually over when the school put themselves on a 1 year postseason ban due to violations under the previous coach. At first, it seemed to be okay with a 3-1 start to the conference, maybe it would be a catalyst to a surprise regular season title. Since that start? They have lost 5 out of their last 6 and are now playing out the season with nothing to play for but pride. They do have solid players that UND needs to keep an eye on, starting with Jordan Davis, who is one of the better guards in the conference as a sophomore (averaging 19 a game with 5 boards and 5 assists). DJ Miles is a solid sharpshooter who can burn a team if they are not respecting him. The record against UNC in Big Sky play has not been stellar. 3-5 overall and 2-2 in Grand Forks. The games in this series has typically gone down to the wire. UND needs to get back to what they were doing before the road trip last weekend. Hopefully Avants is finally back healthy and nobody else is fighting the same illness he was. The schedule picks up from here starting next Thursday Other matchups: MSU (6-4) @ Montana (5-5) My oh my how the season has flipped. MSU has come in winners of their last 5 and the Griz losers of their last 4. MSU got a statement win at home against EWU, really increasing their confidence. Both teams have sights on a top 3 finish and be the biggest game in the rivalry in quite some time. Can MSU win in Missoula for the first time in how long? Or can the Griz finally right the ship and get back in the race for a top 3 finish. PSU (4-5) @ EWU (7-3): Like UND, EWU needs to survive the potential trap game at home before a major showdown with UND next Thursday for 2nd. PSU hot start has now fallen by the wayside and they need a win to turn things back around if they want the bye. EWU wants to keep the surprise going, they might have what it takes to win the whole ball of wax in Reno. SAC (4-5) @ Idaho (6-4): Idaho is right back in the hunt for a first round bye and a top 3 spot after a slow start and getting a victory over PSU helped as Idaho has won 4 out of their last 5. Now they can try to hold serve at home before going on a road trek with a showdown game at UND next Saturday. SAC still looking to get going as it has been up and down all year for them. NAU (3-7) @ Weber (8-1): After getting a big win against UND, NAU proceded to throw up a clunker against ISU, losing in OT. Now they go to Weber, who looks to keep a 2 game advantage over EWU and UND. Schedule starts to pick up for Weber after this one with several big games in the month of February. NAU looking to get their biggest win in a quite a while and get these young kids some confidence going into Reno. SUU (2-8) @ ISU (2-7): Its the battle of the basement in Poky, not exactly where ISU wanted to be at this time of the year but its not too late for them to turn it around and get hot at Reno. SUU just looking to get anything going at this point, there has been flashes but nothing concrete. The call: UND cannot afford to look past this game to their matchups at home next week, as UNC has nothing to play but pride and be the spoiler. The NAU loss was a bad loss and was a golden opportunity to gain some separation and stay hot behind Webers heels. They cannot afford to lose this game and get caught further in the muck. That being said, this team is experienced enough to realize that and after a good week of practice should bounce back and get the W before the biggest home stand of the year next week. Our big 2 will outplay theirs and get the close win 77-71 UND 4 Quote
