dakotadan Posted May 13, 2011 Author Posted May 13, 2011 Sioux prep for four-game series with NJIT The Fighting Sioux begin a nine-game homestand to close out their regular season on Friday with the opener of a four-game series against NJIT. UND and the Highlanders split a four-game series in Newark last season. The nine-game homestand is the longest of the season for the Sioux as they are set to play those contests over an eight-day span. UND will host South Dakota State in a non-conference game on Tuesday, May 17 before concluding the Great West slate with a four-game series against Texas-Pan American starting Thursday, May 19. Hopefully the weather holds out for them and they are able to get all of the games in. It would be nice to see some decent sized crowds at these games. I am sure the guys would appreciate our support. Also, don't forget that UND will be hosting the Great West tournament at Kraft Field from May 24-28. Quote

dakotadan Posted May 15, 2011 Author Posted May 15, 2011 Final game: NJIT 11 UND 9 In a season that was supposed to see a big decrease in scoring for college teams, the Sioux have done a very good job of producing offense. Now they just need to step up the defense and stop the late inning comebacks by these other teams. Quote

star2city Posted May 25, 2011 Posted May 25, 2011 A nice baseball blog from New York Tech We got acquainted with the brand new turf at Kraft Field and it is definitely going to provide a challenge for all teams in the tournament both defensively and offensively. The field seemed to play slow, which is really going to force the infielders to attack the ball aggressively. Offensively, bunting is going to be a major weapon this week if done correctly as the ball rolls level without it leaning foul. The biggest challenge with the turf is the mound. There are not many mounds in the NCAA (if any) that use a turf mound and is going to be a challenge for pitchers getting used to it in a game situation. We practice indoors on turf mounds all winter leading up to the break of our season, but throwing bullpens in a cage is completely different then throwing in the conference tournament. There are a few teams that have the advantage as they pitched on it prior to the commencement of this tournament, but for those who had the privilege of North Dakota traveling to their campuses, the only time they will see the mound will be in pivotal game action. Aside from the practice and the field, North Dakota has done a really great job in hosting so far with the kids camp today and the inaugural Great West Baseball pre-tournament banquet (or as Stephen MacNamara likes to call it a Quote

Makes a huge difference when you're getting some pitching. Had a staff ERA of over 8 going into the tournament and all of a sudden our pitchers have only given up a total of 3 runs in two games. We've got decent hitting (team BA of .291), so if we continue to get that kind of pitching, who knows. . . . . . Quote
