star2city Posted January 11, 2011 Share Posted January 11, 2011 The Longwood game is just another illustration that the true building blocks of a mid-major program start with the freshmen. This program needs the capability of offering three scholarships both this spring and next in order for this program to continue building. Sadly, the scholarships held by the sophomores are a noose around the neck of this program. Without a change, 2013 is the earliest date in which significantly more talent would come into the program. With the high amount of scholarships held by the underperforming sophomore class, the freshman will only get help when they are seniors. With about 7 minutes left one of my kids asked if they ever get to a 100. I said "sometimes, but they won't this game". When they had 90 with about 3 minutes left, I thought I was going to have to eat my words. I think the guys tried to get there (100) and maybe tried a bit too hard. Nice win. GO SIOUX!!! It is a shame but you look at attendence figures at the lower D1 schools and they dont draw 1000 per game and they've been established D1 schools for a long time. The attendence will continue to grow as the team continues to improve. Us diehards will see the growth while others will just wait and see the final product. Lets enjoy the growth. While football numbers have increased with the move to D-I, we are not anywhere near historic numbers in men's basketball. Yes, that's what I thought but I took a closer look at my source and now see I also included some stats of TOTAL attendance (road and home). This is the list I should have posted. Still, the point is valid. There has been a drop off for all the Dakota schools since our heydays in Div. II. Even the Bison didn't have numbers that approached their old Div. II days a couple of years ago when they had that nice run that landed them in the Big Dance. bincitysioux Posted January 12, 2011 Share Posted January 12, 2011 I believe it was star2city that posted a link that college basketball has been struggling even for the high majors in recent seasons. Honestly, I don't expect UND to ever average near the 5,000 mark for attendance in the near future, however as we progress into Big Sky play over the years, I think regular 3,000 plus crowds are attainable, and 2,000 or better for the women as long as we are competetive in league play. I'd think the same should be true for the other 3 Dakota schools. Historically, there's been some pretty good basketball played in the Dakota's amongst UND, USD, and SDSU.................
