The Bismarck Tribune has done a piece on Bismarck as the Capital City, Fargo as the city of commerce and now The Cities in between.

Grand Forks is probably the best example of a town built around one institution, the University of North Dakota.

Some see a rivalry between the towns, but Gershman does not agree with that thinking.

Get with it Hal. There is a rivalry between Fargo and Grand Forks. Why did they build the Alerus? Sioux football...nope it was concerts. Why are restaurants that were in Fargo now popping up in Grand Forks. Its to attract the Canadians. You are the first big city between Winnipeg and Fargo, you have to do something to keep shoppers up there. Thats why you have a Super Target and Fargo doesn't. Whatever Fargo has you know it won't be long before Grand Forks will try to have it too....except the best University in North Dakota!!!

They couldn't expand the old one any further so they had to build new. In Fargo they had room to expand the store a lot more. Other businesses also make their own decisions about whether to build in Grand Forks or Fargo or both, based on what they think is good for them.

The Alerus Center was built in part for concerts, and in part to attract conventions. Conventions bring a lot more people to town over a year than concerts, as I've mentioned before. Grand Forks didn't have anyplace that could do a good size convention before the Alerus. Fargo, Bismarck and even Minot had better facilities for conventions than Grand Forks before the Alerus. That was the big draw for the business community. The concert idea was a draw for the general public.

Their is plenty of rivalry between Fargo and Grand Forks, but not everything that happens in either town is because of the rivalry.

Target in Grand Forks couldn't get any bigger than it was. And it was doing close to the amount of business that the Fargo Target was doing. So they had to build a new store in a new location in order to keep building the business. At the time they were really kicking off the Super Target theme. So they chose to build a Super Target in Grand Forks. It was a test, and also a decision to build for the future rather than have to add on again in the future. In Fargo they had room so they added on to the store.

The city of Grand Forks had NO INFLUENCE on the decision to build a Super Target. That decision was made by Target management in MINNEAPOLIS. Any rivalry between Grand Forks and Fargo had absolutely NO BEARING on the decision by Target to build a Super Target in Grand Forks and not build one in Fargo. It was a business decision.

Did NDSU then go D1 out of envy of the success of UND hockey? If the Republicans have their way Fargo should be very worried about getting funding for their diversion project since that requires earmark spending. With no Pomeroy and Dorgan to get them the money they are in trouble, Oh but Berg and Hoeven will get the money for them. Neither of them have the muscle to get the kind of money Fargo needs. If someone lives in Fargo that posts here be afraid, and I mean very afraid, of future flooding.

I do think that the Bison went D-I in everything in part because Fargo wouldn't approve of money for the "multipurpose" arena that was to be used in part for Bison hockey. It might have happened anyway, but that decision by Fargo voters sealed it for NDSU's move up.

As for flood protection, I don't think anyone from either party will play politics with things like that. It will always backfire on you in the end. Fargo needs, should get and will get the diversion project. It is simply unacceptable to just rely on temporary clay dikes and sandbagging efforts to protect Fargo in future flood events.

Its funny. Our neighbors, the ones most like us, seem to be the ones we are suppose to hate (rivalry).
