JESUS,family, rutgers Posted October 4, 2010 Posted October 4, 2010 This may have already been covered, but will the Fighting Sioux logos be allowed on the inside and outside of the arena or are the PC thought police demanding they be removed? Quote
MissSioux85 Posted October 4, 2010 Posted October 4, 2010 It is my understanding that the logos won't be removed unless REA management decides to remove them, or UND convinces REA to remove them. The settlement was between the NCAA and UND. The Ralph is privately owned (UND rents) so it's technically not subject to terms of the settlement. However, if UND wants to host NCAA playoff games at The Ralph then it would need to convince REA management and the Engelstad family to abide by NCAA regulations and remove or replace some of the logos over the next 5-10 years. The more permanent logos (ie: the ones imbeded in granite) would not have to be removed. Jody Hodgson (REA General Manager) has stated that there are currently no plans to remove any of the logos and if they did agree to remove them, UND would have to foot the bill (last estimated at $1 million). Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Quote
jimdahl Posted October 4, 2010 Posted October 4, 2010 Future of REA logos explained - The Dakota Student Doesn't explain quite as much as the title implies, but... Boyd and Athletic Director Brian Faison added that the imagery of the Fighting Sioux logo in the Ralph will mostly affect UND's ability to host men's and women's post-season play But many still wonder about the thousands of Fighting Sioux logos in the Ralph and if these images will need to be removed. According to the NCAA-UND Settlement Agreement, there are three categories of imagery: imagery of historical significance, items embedded in architecture and removal in the ordinary course. The agreement states that certain imagery of historical significance and items imbedded in architecture can stay. The third category applies to items such as seats or rugs with Sioux logos that will eventually be replaced due to "ordinary wear and tear" with items that do not contain the Sioux logo. All REA items to be placed into the three categories will be determined later, Boyd said. Quote

The Sicatoka Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 All of the official documents between the NCAA and the State of ND (meaning the ND SBoHE and UND) are here: http://www.ag.nd.gov/NCAA/ncaa.htm The specific details to you question are in the last two pages of the Settlement Agreement, found here: http://www.ag.nd.gov/NCAA/SettlementAgreement.pdf Quote
darell1976 Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 What at the Ralph would host a playoff? The round robin that goes to the WCHA Final Five in St. Paul, and a West Reginal which I heard they are using more NHL arenas and not college arenas. So at most no regional and no round robin. That's not losing much. 2 wins on the road and you are in St. Paul. As for a regional we hosted 1 in our history and 1 NCAA Championship in the Old Ralph. Quote

The NCAA ban does not affect anything in WCHA play. So UND will still be able to host WCHA playoff rounds, and the Final Five will probably remain in St. Paul for the forseeable future. One possibility is that the NCAA has discussed going to a first round playoff series, especially if they add teams to the playoffs. That round wouldn't be held at the Ralph. Other potential casualties would be volleyball and women's basketball playoff games. Quote
mksioux Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 As others have said, REA is under no obligation to get rid of any of the Sioux imagry because it was not a party to the settlement agreement. Moreover, under the settlement agreement, UND can continue to use REA without penalty for all regular season games and WCHA playoff games. The only restriction is that the NCAA will not award REA an NCAA regional (or any other NCAA sponsored championship event) unless REA complies with limited removal of Sioux imagry pursuant to the details in the settlement. The chances of REA hosting a regional are not that great anymore anyway because the NCAA is moving toward neutral sight facilities, so my guess is that REA is not going to be in any hurry to remove any imagry.
