GeauxSioux
Steve Fool Bear, Fort Yates, N.D., column: Standing Rock Sioux's voices must be heardSome believe that the issue of the Fighting Sioux nickname at UND issue is a cause that should be decided by an outspoken few. But that idea completely contradicts the fundamental principles of our civilization: majority rule and democracy. Only on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation do the people have to fight for what is rightfully theirs
Chewey
Great article! This is so true. Let's hope that the SBoHE reads it. Steve Fool Bear hits the issue right on the head and he pulls no punches about the make up of the few anti-nicknamers.

Stating the obvious, the SBoHE doubly messed up with the October 1st date considering that Sept 30th is the SR council vote and also the week of UND Homecoming. The SBoHE cannot extend the deadline until after the SR vote, as extending it before would be considered tampering with the election. Effectively, Wednesday night if Murphy is elected, he has to request that the deadline be extended. Always thought saving the nickname would take a prayer of a last-second long shot: might come true. Call me cynical, but I'm thinking Brett Favre to Greg Lewis wouldn't help this.

When the SBoHE set the October 1 deadline they thought that Standing Rock would hold their election on September 15th. That would have given them 2 weeks to decide whether to extend or not. From the Grand Forks Herald on May 14th. Initially, Shaft recommended an Aug. 1 deadline to begin retiring the nickname. Board member Pam Kostelecky felt Oct. 1 would be better because it would give Standing Rock nickname supporters a chance to issue a referendum either at the July 15 primary election or the Sept. 15 tribal election. You are correct that they should have considered the fact that UND would be celebrating Homecoming that week.
The Sicatoka
I do enjoy that Mr. Fool Bear is calling out the hypocrisy of Mr. McNeil. It is ridiculous for a person to claim to be a traditionalist, then to disregard our sacred ceremony because of a disagreement with the UND nickname. And opponents must not claim they're fighting oppression, then seek to oppress the voices of their own people. Mr. McNeil (who claiming to be "traditional" changed his name to His Horse is Thunder) wants it both ways. It's good that someone's calling him on it. Blackheart
Steve Fool Bear can see it; why can't the SBoHE? They better walk the line as this plays out, Wouldn't it be something if they're the ones that take the vote away from Standing Rock? GeauxSioux
N. Dakota's 'Fighting Sioux,' fight for survival"One thing Ron His Horse Is Thunder has said is that the Constitution of the Standing Rock doesn't allow for a referendum," university spokesman Peter Johnson said. "But the tribal council could still vote for the resolution." The election for chairman comes not a moment too soon for Fighting Sioux fans. The North Dakota Board of Higher Education was scheduled Thursday to begin the process of retiring the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo.
