sprig Posted September 27, 2005 Posted September 27, 2005 A poster on another board recently commented that since North Dakota's coaches (Hakstol and Berry) didn't have a lot of points in their careers, our freshmen D were going to have to "learn on their own". I'm still laughing about that one. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Maybe the Sioux should get the Wooger out of retirement to teach how to be an offensive defensemen. First lesson, forget about that end where your goalie resides. Quote

I still expect Andy to be sent down, but it is amazing to me and a testimony to the UND program and Andy's talents that he's done this good thus far. As for the read on Chorney: WOW! I wish I was still in Grand Forks so I could see this kid play. Quote

AZSIOUX Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 matt jones survives another cut wit the coyotes. gretzky really likes him a lot! great for matt. im guessing there are 1 or 2 more cuts tops with only 3 preseason games left. he does not look to be in the lineup tonight unless there are some scratches at game time. chances are he will likely still be sent to san antonio to the AHL but then again maybe not!! redwing77 Posted September 29, 2005 Posted September 29, 2005 http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?ID=137989 It talks about rookies mentions bo and zpar. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Hardly anything. They spend most of their time touting Vanek and Lehtinen. Nothing false or dumb about it although Lindsay Ruff's quote to the Buffalo news: "He's probably the most all-around gifted player I've been around." got a chuckle. Obviously, it seems Vanek learned how to play defensively while with Rochester. Great player. All-around gifted? Stretch. Offensively gifted? Definitely. Quote
NDFlyer Posted September 29, 2005 Posted September 29, 2005 It is worth more than a chuckle, it is a pure gut buster. It is one of the most ridiculous quotes I have ever seen in hockey. Ruff must be getting senile. When I think of Vanek I think of "going through the motions" not "all around gifted." These coaches will say anything to cater to their fan base and coddle their baby prospects. Quote

redwing77 Posted September 29, 2005 Posted September 29, 2005 I liked how Matt took the demotion however, I'm not so sure that it was a failure to be sent down. I really think it came down to playing time. That was what the pundits were speculating and I really think it came down to that. The Oiler's defensive depth chart is deep and Greene, IMO, is good enough to make the team but what use would that make it if he spends it riding the pine most of the season or, more likely, taking in the game from the press box? In the AHL he gets to start off in a pivotal role on the blue line. He'll get a lot of time on the ice and there's no rule saying he can't be brought up later. Commodore only lasted half a season in the AHL before his first call up. I doubt Greene's case will be much different. Quote

NDFlyer Posted September 29, 2005 Posted September 29, 2005 Red Wing is 100% correct. M.G. needs ice time. No purpose is served by having a prospect see 3-4 shifts per night or watch the games from the press box when he could be getting 20+mins in the A. Besides, defense is a difficult position for a young guy to learn in the NHL. It takes time. Quote
