That's why I'm never a fan of transfers. They washed out at the last place they were at, so why should we expect any better of them here? I'm wondering if we won't have a few more leave by the time spring ball ends.
We didn't have much of a choice the 1st year.....we stretched on a couple guys like Jenkins-Moore and we had 2 guys that didn't even show. We are in a much better position this year to perform our due diligence with transfers, although our pot smoking WR isn't looking so hot right now. Anyway, not everyone has the fairy tale college career from recruiting to graduation. If that is the requirement, cast the 1st stone. If the coaches like a transfer and it's their belief a player will make us a better team, I support it.

Watch for Grant Aplin in spring ball at center, possibly at guard, fighting for a starting position. Put him on your radar as a player to watch.
I know from multiple sources 1) he has some of the biggest lifts in the weight room 2) his shuttle and vertical are at the top for O-line 3) he was tough as nails on the scout team last year, facing our starters 4) has a good rappot with Studsrud 5) coaches speak well of him as a person. Really, what more could you ask for in a guy?
-
My take on the O-line. Meehan at RT. Anderson at LG. Stockwell at LT If he is healed from his hernia by the start of the season. If not then Cox at LT. Everything else is up for grabs.
This O-line will not resemble last years. Unfortunately there are some health issues that will effect some would be impact players. Knauf is the real deal, a lot of respect.
Correct me if I am wrong, but the injuries now are not expected to be an issue this fall???
It would be a luxury to have 7-8 hogs ready to go this fall.

I was confused when I saw those tweets. Norberg's twitter lists himself as a linebacker, and Butler played linebacker all last year did he not? I can't really imagine they would move him from safety to linebacker just to move him back to safety the next year, Norberg I could potentially see playing either position though. Thoughts?
Depth is a need at RB, Norberg sticks at that position. He isn't very dynamic but if a hole is there he can get some yards. He also might transition into a fullback type, one that can sneak out and catch a ball or two. Butler I believe will be a situational guy used in passing downs to attach the QB. A nickel type that can be played by a safety or LB. Reyes and Johnson at the safeties, Dom, Sweed, Arnell at the backups for safety as it sits now. Spring ball ahead.......we'll know more after that.
-
Per Baukol's twitter, it looks like a couple bench press records were broken during testing:
Safety - Javen Butler benched 355 to break Justin Belotti's record
Running Back - Kyle Norberg benched 385 to break Shannon Burnell's record
Linebacker - Will Ratelle benched 405 to break Ben Leingang's record
Good to hear about Ratelle and the bench record. Ben Leingang never played a meaningful down at UND.
I hope Norberg learns to play as big as his bench.

I'm not sure that Crockett has the physical ability to play in the NFL. But, if he can get himself into a regular position in an NFL lineup, I don't doubt that he can be an emotional leader in the locker room for whatever team that might play for. Crockett's an outgoing, high energy kind of guy. He fits the profile of a locker room leader well.
I agree. Crockett has some shortcomings when comparing to NFL talent. 1) lacks a little vision 2) marginal lateral movement 3) if he has a hole for 3 yards, most times he gets you 3 yards (where an NFL type runner would get the 3 yards plus a couple more and even break long runs when nothing is there) His physical upside is when he has a hole for a home run, he has the speed to break it, but at the next level?? He is also durable, I don't think he missed much game time. All things considered.......I don't see NFL for him but it's an extremely high standard.
Who carries the ball more next year for SU?? Morelock or Fraizer? I think both bring a little less to the table than Crockett, but what's the view from SU guys? Anyone else going to get carries?
-
You'd have to imagine the plan will be to stop the run and make Wentz beat you; however, that's dangerous territory as well.
As a coaching friend once told me, when you pass the ball, three things can happen, and two of those things are bad. Focus should likely be to stop the run and bring pressure on Wentz, hoping for a sack fumble or deflected pass resulting in an interception. UND's defense will need to create turnovers for UND to have a shot.
I think you always game plan to stop the run......except for maybe an Eastern Washington, I don't know what the hell to plan against that. I think we will have a lot of run blitzes with the pulling and power run game we'll see from SU. Ratelle should be blowing things up in the backfield when Schmitty calls it at the right time. If we misalign or get caught in something SU could pop a 10-15 yarder. The other thing SU does is wear on you, and run plays you stop in the 1st half are all of a sudden going for 5 - 15 yards a crack. That's why we need some offensive production, to keep our D as fresh as possible.
SU's pass attack.......can be hit and miss in my opinion. The young kid they have RJ is pretty good. I'm sure we'll be aware of where he lines up on passing downs.

Hanging out in the big sky and avoiding area rivals keeps und on the verge of not being relevant in FB and BB compared to area rivals. IMO, that's a major mistake, especially with the national attention that the Summit will get in their new building. Talk all you want about FB in the 90's, but scholarship reductions were a big help then. At some point und will need to crawl back to Summit. You are current playing outside your recruiting footprint, and that hurts, especially in FB. For the Bison, und in the big sky and the rivalry on ice has been liberating, and a blessing. In FB, not having to deal with the ugliness of that rival has kept NDSU focused on the bigger picture.
Yawn.......
It is a long time between now and the game. What's on page 2 of 'Moronic Drivel to Post on a Non-Rivals Forum'? Seriously, page 1 wore out!!

Bubba's last experience against NDSU ended with I believe over 200 yards rushing in just over quarter.
I don't think ndsu will be anything special next year though. Should be neat to check the box score.
Ya, I gave Schmitty some crap about that. Other than being out gunned a little physically they had a LB blowing assignment after assignment. Then, other guys try to start compensating for that, then you end up with a cluster F.
-
I think ndsu will move the ball pretty well.
I think und still has trouble moving the ball.
I'll take ndsu by 3-5 touchdowns.
A 3-5 touchdown spread would be the case in any game where one team can move the ball and the other can't. It's a little early to give a score but Bubba and Schmitty are familiar with SU, this won't be their 1st rodeo in the Fargo Dome.
-
I am not as scared of this game as Bison fans think we should be. We can play against the run, we face wide-outs better than what NDSU has almost every week, and NDSU did lose a lot on D. But, I'm sure they'll still be talented all the way around and Wentz is a serious player with a good O-line.
NDSU is more of a known entity than we are, so a lot is going to have to do with our offense being able to step up their game.
Just some initial thoughts-
-
So with the likely suspension or dismissal of Clive Georges, would you say it's safe to say Alex Reed will be the #1 WR to start the 2015 season?
To be determined. We will get a look at his ball skills and what he can do in live action. WR is pretty open for playing time, but Reed definitely brings some toughness to the position.
-
Neither. My expressing what I think is the truth is neither trolling, nor evidence of my interest in a football game. It is simply the truth.
'Opinion' Moron, now beat it-
-
What, you can't handle the truth?
I'll be on the sideline with the team. I doubt you are even connected to the NDSU program. So, not worried one bit about what you think is the truth.
-
No, very few tickets will actually change hands in the secondary market, and those that do will mostly go to UND fans and fence-sitters who aren't really fans of either team. Bison fans aren't beyond taking advantage of delusional UND fans. But most that have tickets will keeps theirs. So, there will actually end up being very few UND fans at the game, and very few tickets sold at an inflated price.
Haven't we heard enough from this guy? Forever?

Thanks for the update. Has Cox added some weight over the winter?
From his 250 lb. roster weight last year.......I'd think so. The spring game roster might give a good update.
-
The starting O-Line is very far from being settled. As someone did elude to Francis did, or needs to have a little procedure on his knee. The freshman from Manitoba might be given a shot given how he played in the All Star US vs. Canada game. (The US team was pretty confident they loaded up the roster with more talent than Canada could handle, they were wrong). With any of my comments, I try to add what I can without breaking the 'bro code' with the guys I talk to. If you know someone on the O-Line, believe me the starting spots are unsettled, so keep up the hard work fellas. Other than Cox, numerous other guys were mentioned as well for working their tails off, but Cox and 1 other guy(totally forgot who) were said to be having 'breakout' years, putting themselves in contention for the starting line-up.
-
My kid is but I'd rather have you talk to the strength people. Not to be an ass but 1 of the 3 you listed is clearly the weakest on the team. It seems that some of the posters on this site have some inside knowledge. Is that true or is everybody just doing their best guess? I always have respected Geaux Siouxs input.
A breakout year for an individual, really stepping up his game, ready to play with the big boys.......from the horses mouth. Maybe the goal and excitement is about getting guys to compete at the level your son is already at? A little context.

For every bad report or story their exists countless good ones- I will share some tidbits, not all inclusive.
We have a 258 lb. LB running in the 'fastest' training group, top 5. How teams plan on blocking Ratelle next year will be interesting.
Flowers has been looking good and could contend for some playing time at corner, he will be a Sophomore only.
Alex Reed and the safety Johnson are impressing coaches. Look for both to start. Both are running in the top group, along with Reyes.
Cox is crushing it in the weight room for the O line.
3 deep at nose with Woodsmall, Gopher kid who's name I can't spell, and Tank. Should be a good rotation.
I will butcher these names but Bakker and Disterhaupt are not only solid backup options at LB, but could be pushing for starting jobs.
Film study film study for the QBs, mum is the word on who's going to be the man come fall. Stay tuned.
Arrington said UND workouts and way harder than what they did at UAB.
Nate is going to update on twitter the results of testing this spring. He knows we enjoy the numbers and updates......
That was long, I've got the munchies.

OK and when Harvard comes out with studies showing it can aid in recovery from concussions and other head injuries, we should just ignore that? Personally, I'd much rather have had a doctor prescribe a bag of weed for pain after my surgeries than have given me a bottle of Oxycontin.
Medical vs. recreational use. I am sure the 6 year old mentioned above was rolling joints, smoking it up. I am not against medical uses.
The big problem with weed is that, since it's illegal, you need to go through a drug dealer who, most likely sells other drugs too.
That sums it up.

Actually pot is for a variety of reasons, not even close to being as bad as alcohol. Also, this is 2015, for all we know he could have stopped in Colorado (or Washington or Oregon) and legally bought a bag. It's going to be legal in 10 years in this country and, it would be nice, if we as a society stopped ruining young people's lives over it.
Right-
Let's giggle our way into the playoffs. Sounds good.

I actually think it would be wrong to kick him off the team for this. A Class B misdemeanor is the same level as a DUI, minor in possession, or a noise violation in North Dakota. Couple this with the Grand Forks Police Department's wanton disregard to the 4th Amendment when it comes to UND students and I think this warrants internal team discipline vs dismissal.
Pot is way worse than alcohol. Pot is a cancer for a team, it's illegal, and you must know a drug dealer or associate with people that deal drugs to get it. All you need for some booze is a crappy fake ID or know a 21 year old buyer......
I hope it's dealt with cause I don't want to be hearing a pot story associated with UND football every few months.

Actually it was on the Herald site already on Saturday. No one is hiding anything. Article says he's still on the team. http://www.grandforksherald.com/sports/und-football/3689948-und-football-player-arrested-marijuana-possession
My point is the story is becoming a little less local.......more damaging to the program.
Serious question. Does the Herald report stories like this on NDSU football players as the Forum did in this case?....does a Herald/Forum relationship exist?
-
George thing is baseless.
Not his issue. Non-player issue.
So....nothing to see here.
The news just posted on Inforum 2 hours ago.
I predict a football career just went up in smoke.
Way to make the most of your second chance Clive.

2 games, just guessing.......
But, we'll have 3 guys starting that are transfers from this year. (Reed, Arrington, Johnson). Then look at Hinojsa, Flowers, Boas, Bakker, and you have 7 guys on the 2 deep for this year, all transfers. And I am probably missing a guy or two that will be on the 2 deep.
