Some day 5 notes on Maag. Maag impressed as a true freshman, is he poised for a bust out year? Is it possible he ends up with more receptions than Wanzek? Loving the talent and depth we finally have at WR this year. Garret Maag had a big day in the passing game, showcasing his overall skill set deep down the field and short underneath. UND is deep and experienced at wide receiver with Travis Toivonen and Noah Wanzek leading the way but Maag might have the highest potential ceiling of anyone in the group.

This ranking looks slightly different than some of the others. We are the last honorable mention on the list. It's time for our team to take a big leap this year and get back on the radar.....permanently! https://thefanatic.com/college/football/2019/08/the-fanatics-top-25-jackrabbits-lead-our-preseason-fcs-ranking/?fbclid=IwAR2FO7hwySTCF98JCjMHuT0F5wD_5Re6LXJsjktIDsi-9NxDUlmTkYpwR-8

Since we seem to have some decent depth at DB, would be nice to not have to pull the shirt on Fort?
-
Have they had McKinney fielding punts? I'd think he would be a great returner just like Dressler and Santiago, as long as he is sure handed enough and confident enough to field them under pressure.
-
If only 1 or 2 of our WR's could also play NG for depth....we'd be set!

Thanks again for the write up guys, I'm so pumped for this year! Nice that we finally have some good depth and a number of positions. Can't wait to see the new offense in action. I would expect success against Drake, it will be interesting to see how well the offense will do against NDSU in week 2. So thinking about areas of concern or lack of depth.....NG would be #1, what are the next areas of potential concern? Sure hope the special teams is drastically improved this year. Hopefully we actually feel fairly confident when we need to attempt a 42 yard field goal. I don't have much confidence though that we won't get a punt blocked, I just hope it doesn't come at a crucial time. Kostich has proven he doesn't know how to get his guys ready to handle punt protection, I doubt the light bulb magically came on for him this year. If I was a Vegas odds maker....I'd say about 80% chance of us getting a punt blocked this year. I'm thinking normally this should be around like 10% or something. Sounds like Fort is a stud and the real deal and will get his shirt pulled. Sure would have been nice to keep it and get a true senior year out of him where he is dominating, but I want to win now!

I agree, I'm not too concerned about getting Schuster on the field yet, I'd rather seem Grover and Zimm get some decent reps due to us having a big lead. Wouldn't be bad to get Schuster a couple live game snaps this year though, but pretty rare the 4th string gets in a game if the other 3 are healthy. Awesome write up Teeder, I don't know how you remember so many details....you must take good notes....I love it! I think our defense is going to be good this year, so very good sign that the offense is already keeping up with them. Some of it might be that our offense isn't so complicated to learn, that and the new offensive scheme is probably just so much better. I'm so excited for this season I can hardly stand it!

It's nice hearing a WR that is not even on the two deep making plays and getting noticed (Pedro Schmidt). Safe to say we have the deepest group of wide receivers we've ever had, at least since going DI? Which is good since we will be using them more and may need that depth. Sure is nice to have 3 QB's this year too. Man it was always so nerve racking when Studs was our only QB....and when every time he got shook up the entire season would flash in front of your eyes for a second. Thanks for the practice notes Teeder!

Not sure if you found it yet or if somebody else posted it, but here it is. I did find it on the FIghtingHawks.com site. 2019_Media_Guide.pdf

I'm sure there will be people that are glad it's on Saturday instead. Will be curious to see if turnout is better on Saturday than Thursday. Saturday may very well work out better for more people. It just doesn't work out better for me.....and it's all about me right? Game time is at 2:00 AZ time...was planning on being at a pool party at that time, guess I will be watching from my phone or bringing my laptop!
-
Now that the season is getting closer and have started to think more about the first game, I really wish they would have kept the first game of the year as a Thursday night game. Mid afternoon on a Saturday on Labor Day weekend kinda sucks. Was attendance on those Thursday night games really bad? I'd think Saturday on Labor Day weekend wouldn't be much better?

How far into camp is the roster usually updated with updated weights?

I think this sums things up perfectly. More diverse offense helps a lot, but I think another huge factor is the mentality that Danny and the new offense will bring. It was just completely demoralizing at the end of last year on offense, and there is no way our players couldn't feel that. We may not have success on offense all of the time this year, but I think the players are just going to have a more positive attitude, like there is hope the OC will find something that works, not just run the same 5 plays no matter what. You can't tell me Kett and all of the other guys aren't more excited in general about this year and the new offense than they were a year ago. The UND360 guys said there seems to be a lot of excitement within the team. I think us fans feel the excitement, I know I'm more excited this year than I ever remember being. I also like that we have a tough schedule this year, lets go out and make some waves. August is going to be the longest month ever, I can't wait!!
-
Back from my three week trip to ND, which always makes July go fast. Now I'm definitely ready and looking forward to football. Always excited for each season, but even more so this year with our particularly difficult schedule, but new OC to hopefully give us a much better chance to be successful. However it still feels like we are one injury away at NG, from our whole defense dropping down a couple of notches as teams salivate at getting 3 yards a crack up the middle at will.

You're right, that is a great article....sounds very impressive! Sounds like at one point they almost used him as safety....wonder if he would be considered at Safety? So how tall is he, the article says 5'10 but his hudl says 6'0? By looking at the hudl he probably looks more like 5'10? https://www.hudl.com/profile/7862989/Quinton-Urwiler

We definitely need to improve on defending mobile QB’s, but mobile QB’s give almost all teams fits.
-
Sounds like a great time, and a good idea.....I’d definitely be there is I was back for that game!

lol I just saw that this past weekend in the water. I'm always jealous every time I see it!

I've always thought white should be the next helmet color if they do get a new helmet, I'd take it over black easy. White would look sharp with the grey jerseys. The green helmet does look good with the white jerseys. I'm ok with the number on the side since the logo can only face the one way. The logo would really stand out on a white helmet, it gets kind of lost on the green ones.

Yep, you've gotta think big and try. We offered him first, so that also means something to kids sometimes too. I at least feel we have a better chance than we did a year ago with Danny talking to the kid and a more exciting offense (hopefully). He has made a lot of trips to bigger schools, so we probably won't get a real early commitment but you never know. Hopefully his trip to UND goes well! We seem to be getting some good hogs (OL) to commit early....would be nice to add a QB to that mix.
-
Does anybody know if they are still trying to find some type of transfer at NG yet? Or are we just gonna roll with undersized NG all season long. Given the DL as a whole with the starters and 2 deep, we loose Tank, Greer, and Ceislak (sp) but of course have Bennett back. Thoughts on if the other guys are going to step up and we will end up being just as good overall on the DL this year as we were last year?
-
Danny will certainly take a few lumps his first year, and probably look back at the end of the year and think of some things he could or should have done differently. and learn for the next year. As others have eluded though, the bar was so low after Rudy....particularly those last 3-4 game last year, that was simply pathetic.....almost anything will be an improvement. Was a good post by whoever it was that pointed out that if we score 1 more TD a game last year we are in the playoffs. 7 point jump on average points a game is a lot, but I think with a good OC we may have gotten close to that last year. Lets just hope the OL excels in this new offense, if they can be successful we will have a good year.
-
Exactly. At first I was ok with two bye weeks, since we had....three years in a row I think without a bye week during the season. But I'm thinking if we had an easy game scheduled, we could have gotten to 8 wins and given the strength of our schedule been in the playoffs. If we go 7-4 I'm not sure what will happen, with most teams playing 12 games I wonder how that is going to play out come playoff time. We can't have any bad losses this year, and need to knock off a few of the top teams we play.

McKinney does have a lot of god given natural talent and he will be important to the teams success this year. However due to his size I'm not sure if he is the type of back we want to give 20-25 carries to like a featured RB may get. He is going to be VERY important to our offense, therefore I want him healthy all year long. I actually didn't like it last year when they put him in at the end of games to run the ball when we were running the clock out, I was afraid he'd get hurt running up the gut when the game was already over. He was money on the sweep last year and we need him in there. He definitely needs 10-15 touches again, some rushing the ball, some sweeps, some screens, some out wide. I think that is how Danny will use him this year. I think we also need JJ and Gordon to also get 10-15 touches each game. JJ can be a bulldozer and wear them down, Gordon is mix between JJ and McKinney, then McKinney can run right by them. If McKinney, JJ, and Gordon all get 10-15 touches a game, that means we are likely being very successful moving the ball and we are winning games. I like having three different styles of RB's, gives us lots of options. I think we are all curious to see how the knew offense plays out and how each RB will fit into the offense. It may take a few games for Danny to get a feel for what works well and what doesn't work so well. Only problem after our first game the competition gets stiff so hopefully he figures it out quickly! Win or lose week 2, we will have a pretty good idea after that if our offense has taken a step forward.
-
Yeah forget about him sometimes, hopefully he is back to 100% this year as it will be nice to have him back to help stretch the field at the WR position.
