I sure hope so. I have a feeling it has been the choice of the silent majority for a long-time, but supporters have been much quieter and reserved than the Fighting Sioux Hardliners, the No-Namers and the Nodakers (there is considerable overlap amongst those three groups, but it isn't 100%).
I guess we'll find out later this month.
yup, the roughrider supporters have been quiet as a mouse, especially on this site. Lol

5- way tie 10000 votes each. Since there are not two leading vote getters, Kelly decides to make the decision himself, and christens UND as the Sundogs.

As I've said here, and other places, I'm perfectly fine having Roughriders as the name, even though I didn't vote that way. I don't consider TR a racist, because I do put him in the context of his times.
But I am curious about the big TR and Roughriders fans on this board. People do realize, don't they, that there is the thinnest of thin connections (if not none at all) between TR (and more importantly, the Roughriders) and UND?
Nodaks is not an ideal name, but at least it was the original name of our teams, so there is that connection. TR vacationed here. He was never here for more than about a month, and the total time he actually spent in the state was less than one year. He had a hunting camp here. At the same time he still lived in NY, ran for office and campaigned in NY, raised his family in NY. The Roosevelt family has no connection to UND, as far as I can tell.
The Roughriders were formed years after TR stopped vacationing in ND, and was formed by soldiers from the southwest, and TR's Ivy League buddies out east. I don't think they ever set foot in this state.
It would be like if George H.W. Bush vacationed in Maine (which he did), opened a fishing business while he was there which then failed in less than a year, causing him to return to Texas forever, and the University of Maine decides to name it's hockey team after George's military regiment. Um, ok I guess.
I've always been fascinated by the way the state of North Dakota has latched onto TR. I understand it. It's not like we're Ohio or Virginia or New York or some other state where numerous Presidents have been born, raised and entered politics.
But TR hunted deer and elk here, then muttered one very memorable phrase saying nice things about us, and we've suddenly adopted him as our native son, and now want to name our flagship University after his military regiment.
Again, Roughriders is a fine name, and I have no problem if that's what is chosen. But I just find the connection (or really, lack thereof) kind of funny.
nice post. I like your pres. bush analogy. Awhile back I posted it would be like taking into account bill Clinton visited North Dakota a couple times during his presidency, said he liked it here, and then UND deciding to call its teams the UND Saxophones.

Why?
if you wait until Friday, your vote gets counted twice.

Don't believe I've called anyone stupid, or a racist, but yeah I've posted stuff to support my agenda. Personally, I wouldn't go to those lengths, but to each his own.
I haven't, either. Not sure what your obsession is with me. But, to each his own.
-
so it's ok to call those of us supporting nodaks stupid, but it's not ok to post words from the mouth of teddy Roosevelt? like I said, everyone has posted stuff to support their agenda. if you are bothered by some direct quotes from the one man who is the only link between the state of north Dakota and the nickname roughriders, you should maybe consider a different nickname choice, rather than getting upset at the people posting direct quotes.

yeah, to the point of calling an American hero a racist, not taking the times he lived in into consideration. Heck, we should rename all of the schools in this nation named after Washington and Lincoln because of their racist views!
exactly. turn about is fair play. for several months, every post against roughriders has been met with a barrage of condescending posts. but if someone is a roughrider supporter, I suppose this is a great excuse/guilt trip so others don't point out the ridiculousness of your favorite choice.

This is too funny! It was only a few months ago that Hayduke and the other half dozen of you repeatedly chastised the "no nickname crowd" for not respecting the process when North Dakota was dropped as an option. Now you're chastising the no nickname crowd for respecting and taking part in the process. Too bad "Fighting Hypocrites" wasn't a nickname option for you guys. I'm glad the six of you, jdub and fightingsundogs4life included, are finally realizing that this nickname process definitely has not lived up to its potential.
Excellent post. Shows how everyone is just angling for their favorite choice and will say anything to support it and also to diminish the others.

you could save some money by buying either a nodak mutual insurance shirt, a nodak cab shirt, or a nodak electric cooperative hoodie, nodak outdoors hockey jersey, nodak records hat, or a nodak angler winter gloves?
You could buy a condom. Or stop by the local high school. Or if you wanted to be a bit more extravagant, drive over to JCPenney and buy some front butt mom jeans by Lee. Riders!

for the nostalgic ones voting for fighting hawks and nodaks i expect you to be right on the banks of the english coulee when the may fete comes back to campus..and i expect brad s. to report on it and report back how many current hockey players were in attendance.
is that the imaginary North Dakota regiment of the roughrider cavalry doing calisthenics?

Say Nodaks. Say Canucks. Doesn't sound stupid.
Say North Dakota Nodaks. Say Canucklandia Canucks. Yep, sounds stupid.
nothing sounds as stupid as Ruff Riders. woof woof!

Did you get one of those huge checks.
yeah, it was like i won a golf tournament.
-
i won a few million and then just got bored with it.

To bad that Berry and the boys didn't say they were voting for Rough Riders.....then Schloss would be a hero!
exactly. it's amazing how some roughrider supporters will spin anything and everything to fit their agenda. Schloss gave a direct quote of teddy Roosevelt, yet some are getting all upset because they apparently can't handle the truth.

the NCAA does not have the authority to sanction any states based on any awards they may hand out. at least not that i'm aware of. comparing apples and oranges here.

, Roosevelt was quoted as saying: “I don’t go so far as to think that the only good Indians are dead Indians, but I believe nine out of ten are, and I shouldn’t like to inquire too closely into the case of the tenth.” - See more at: http://undhockey.areavoices.com/?p=100931#comment-151680
I don't see how taking a direct quote from Teddy Roosevelt can be construed as libel or slander. As far as people thinking he was racist, i don't think there's much argument after reading this quote.

It sounds like some people are concerned what the logo would end up being if Nodaks is chosen. Then I thought maybe they could still use a logo depicting a roughrider to make two groups of voters happy.... but, then I came to my senses and remembered the roughriders were never in north Dakota and have nothing to do with the state. so darn it, I guess that won't work.

It isn't everyone but as I stated earlier, the comments make it pretty obvious to anyone who reads them.
can't argue with that. Lets go Nodaks!
-
Nice post. I think fighting can and will be added in front of Nodaks if it gains enough steam after Nodaks is chosen.
-
So we should be expecting the Griz and their pass happy offense to shred UND...........with their 3rd string QB (because of injuries)?
I don't see why not. until we see otherwise, that appears to be the trend.
-
Not a real applicable comparison since there is both an Illini and Utes tribe from which the nickname was either partially or directly derived from.
I was replying to someone giving the examples of Socars, Nocars, and Sodaks. so yes, my reply was indeed applicable, as the conversation had nothing to do with tribal affiliations.

before anyone votes tomorrow i hope they ask themselves which of these five will make und the most $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ for all of our d1 teams...not the one that sticks it to the ncaa, not one gives you a warm nostalgic feeling inside, not the one that makes tom dennis/shakespeare cry....the one that makes und the most money to fund our team going forward.
then Nodaks it is!!!

wouldn't the UND hockey team want to compete against a better football team i.e. USD?
