  1. You have posted the same "fact" multiple times. That "fact" doesn't recognize the fact that North Dakota and Teddy Roosevelt have a real connection, a connection that Roosevelt himself noted many times. It doesn't recognize the fact that the state of North Dakota has used the Roughrider name and story along with the mutual connection to Teddy to create an image used to promote the state. Roughrider State is a generally recognized nickname for the state. As a recognized nickname for the state, it can be used as a nickname for the University as is done in approximately 20 other states across the country. And your "fact" doesn't recognize the definition I noted earlier where roughrider means someone who rides or breaks wild horses. Thousands of North Dakota residents throughout history have been roughriders, including many of my relatives. This also makes Roughriders a suitable nickname for UND. So your "fact" is a minor issue at most and nothing that would preclude the University from using the name. Especially when so many sports nicknames have absolutely no connection to the school or state. Besides, I don't remember any place on the ballot where anyone had to justify their vote, or give a reason for that vote. They only had to pick a name.

so, remind me again why you originally, and continue to, quote my posts and view my facts and opinions as wrong?    i'm tired of the roughrider crowd wearing blinders and tearing to shreds every other name, and yet feel offended by those that disagree with them.

And btw, my facts, as stated, are uncontested.   Your thoughts on roughriders being people who break horses is valid as well.  that wasn't my point, so I didn't address it in my original post before you even started talking to me.  I feel (again, a differing opinion)  <gasp>  the act of breaking horses is nothing original or unique to north Dakota.  Every location on earth that has utilized horses, broke them.    At the risk of repeating myself again and again, I also feel the choice roughriders has moved forward solely because of the Teddy Roosevelt connection.  Again, as I stated originally, if roughriders is chosen I expect full on teddy usage to make this unique, or I will be disappointed.  Two big R's ,or a generic cowboy on a horse, is about as stale and unoriginal of a logo as we could end up with.

  2. I hope we've got a better plan to deal with the noise than we did in the fargodome.....getting up to the line and then standing there for 15 seconds while the crowd noise gets up to 200 decibels didn't work too well.   I've been wrong two weeks in a row.. hoping i'm wrong again.

    Montana   34

    UND         24

  3. Just so you are not being hypocritical, are you lobbying the ND legislature to remove any Roughriders ties from the tourism and commerce departments, and rename tthe Roughrider award to a NoDak or a Fighting Hawk name?

    Didn't think so.

Lol this almost makes sense.  No, wait a minute... it doesn't make any sense at all!  I encourage you to try harder next time.  This could be fun!

  4. You must really pay close attention to these threads. I have been active in the nickname threads since the NCAA announced their Native American policy. I haven't supported any of the names on the ballot. I ended up voting for Roughriders because I believe it is the most marketable of the remaining 5. It probably would have made my final 15 from the original list, but not even in the top 5. And I have been one of the people that repeatedly said that there would be a group from Grand Forks that wouldn't like Roughriders because of Red River. I have repeatedly said that I will support whichever name is chosen because my support is for the University, not for any individual nickname. I just think you will use talk out of both sides of your mouth to put down the Roughrider name.

You keep trying to make the point that not a lot of North Dakotans were involved with Teddy's Roughriders, so it isn't a good fit for UND. I pointed out that the term roughriders has a strong connection to the state in other ways. You just ignore that option so you can continue to harp on your minor point. And that is beside the fact that the state of North Dakota created their own connection to the images 50 years ago, so people make the connection between North Dakota and Teddy's Roughriders even though the connection isn't real strong historically. Besides, how strong a connection did UND have to Sioux when that name was chosen. Were there even any Sioux tribe members in school in 1930? The Sioux tribe had been forced out of the Red River Valley many years before that. Roughriders probably has just as strong a connection to UND right now as Sioux did in 1930.

You should consider going back and reading the post of mine you originally quoted and responded to.   I stated a fact regarding why the name roughriders is even under consideration, and how it has been pumped up on this site (teddy, teddy, teddy!)  I pointed out that in posts made just before mine, people were seeking to distance the connection to teddy Roosevelt.   As you've just explained, the only connection to north Dakota is via teddy Roosevelt.    thanks for enforcing my point regarding the irony of roughrider supporters now wanting to abandon the teddy Roosevelt connection.

  5. I have more than 5 times the number of posts as you, yeah I'm new here.  You have this irrational hatred of the Roughriders nickname because you don't think there are any connections to North Dakota. Then you complain when people suggest logos that aren't related to Teddy, even though the original and most relevant definition doesn't include Teddy. Some reports have even said that the term for the military unit came from Teddy because of his time in North Dakota working with the cowboys and ranchers. Now you throw in your claim that it's a horrible mouthful of a name, even though it is less of a mouthful than Fighting Hawks, or the latest suggestion of Fighting Nodaks. We get it, you hate the name.

you're evidently new to the nickname threads and the roughrider nickname support originating from Teddy Roosevelt.

Point is, people are now hinting at shying away from teddy as part of the logo and promotion, which is comical since he is the entire reason that name gained any steam.  He is the reason ruff riders made it this far.  Own it.

We get it, you like the name and will draw any far fetched connection in an attempt to have it loosely make sense for UND.

  6.

You seem to automatically think of Spanish American war Rough Riders, yet the main meaning of the term roughiders is found here, http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/us/definition/american_english/roughrider. Every definition site is similar, the first definition is breaking or riding wild horse. The Teddy Roosevelt connection is secondary. There are (and were) a large number of roughriders in North Dakota, especially in the western part of the state. Maybe that's how people can look for a non-Teddy logo to go with the name.

you must be new here.  I've seen thousands of posts as to why Roughriders is a "good" choice.  99% of them refer to teddy Roosevelt's Roughriders.

without the teddy connection, the name Roughriders is a horrible mouthful of a name.  It would have never made the list of finalists were it not for the imaginary North Dakota roughrider history.

so, if it is chosen, I will be disappointed if we don't play up the Teddy Roosevelt connection as much as we can.  On the logo, on banners, and mascots.   I want to see every sports venue filled with big ol' teddies.  Bully!

  7. If we could get a high percentage of fans to say fighting before nodaks...especially at the arena...(and get some non official sites to sale non official fighting nodaks merchandise), maybe some of the media (opposing teams newspapers, radio, tv announcers) would call us fighting nodaks....maybe und would officially add fighting...I am thinking it would be a 5 to 10 or more year wait....I would say therr is a small chance of it happening

when the names of the finalists became known, there was a statement released that said tweaking the names a little bit would be possible.   My guess is fighting could be added quite easily to any of the names.  Fighting Nodak sounds the best!

  8. I sure hope so. I have a feeling it has been the choice of the silent majority for a long-time, but supporters have been much quieter and reserved than the Fighting Sioux Hardliners, the No-Namers and the Nodakers (there is considerable overlap amongst those three groups, but it isn't 100%).

I guess we'll find out later this month.

yup, the roughrider supporters have been quiet as a mouse, especially on this site.   Lol

  9. TR.jpg

    nice post about Teddy.

lots of nickname ideas in there that could've honored Teddy and his time in North Dakota.  Too bad they decided to go with a choice from a completely different part of his life and different part of the country.

  10. As I've said here, and other places, I'm perfectly fine having Roughriders as the name, even though I didn't vote that way.  I don't consider TR a racist, because I do put him in the context of his times.

But I am curious about the big TR and Roughriders fans on this board.  People do realize, don't they, that there is the thinnest of thin connections (if not none at all) between TR (and more importantly, the Roughriders) and UND?

Nodaks is not an ideal name, but at least it was the original name of our teams, so there is that connection.  TR vacationed here.  He was never here for more than about a month, and the total time he actually spent in the state was less than one year.  He had a hunting camp here.  At the same time he still lived in NY, ran for office and campaigned in NY, raised his family in NY.  The Roosevelt family has no connection to UND, as far as I can tell.

The Roughriders were formed years after TR stopped vacationing in ND, and was formed by soldiers from the southwest, and TR's Ivy League buddies out east.  I don't think they ever set foot in this state.

It would be like if George H.W. Bush  vacationed in Maine (which he did), opened a fishing business while he was there which then failed in less than a year, causing him to return to Texas forever, and the University of Maine decides to name it's hockey team after George's military regiment.  Um, ok I guess.

I've always been fascinated by the way the state of North Dakota has latched onto TR.  I understand it.  It's not like we're Ohio or Virginia or New York or some other state where numerous Presidents have been born, raised and entered politics.

But TR hunted deer and elk here, then muttered one very memorable phrase saying nice things about us, and we've suddenly adopted him as our native son, and now want to name our flagship University after his military regiment.

Again, Roughriders is a fine name, and I have no problem if that's what is chosen.  But I just find the connection (or really, lack thereof) kind of funny.

nice post.   I like your pres. bush analogy.  Awhile back I posted it would be like taking into account bill Clinton visited North Dakota a couple times during his presidency, said he liked it here, and then UND deciding to call its teams the UND Saxophones.

  11. so it's ok to call those of us supporting nodaks stupid, but it's not ok to post  words from the mouth of teddy Roosevelt?  like I said, everyone has posted stuff to support their agenda.  if you are bothered by some direct quotes from the one man who is the only link between the state of north Dakota and the nickname roughriders, you should maybe consider a different nickname choice, rather than getting upset at the people posting direct quotes.

  12. yeah, to the point of calling an American hero a racist, not taking the times he lived in into consideration.  Heck, we should rename all of the schools in this nation named after Washington and Lincoln because of their racist views!

exactly.   turn about is fair play.  for several months, every post against roughriders has been met with a barrage of condescending posts.    but if someone is a roughrider supporter, I suppose this is a great excuse/guilt trip so others don't point out the ridiculousness of your favorite choice.

  13. This is too funny!  It was only a few months ago that Hayduke and the other half dozen of you repeatedly chastised the "no nickname crowd" for not respecting the process when North Dakota was dropped as an option.  Now you're chastising the no nickname crowd for respecting and taking part in the process.  Too bad "Fighting Hypocrites" wasn't a nickname option for you guys.  I'm glad the six of you, jdub and fightingsundogs4life included, are finally realizing that this nickname process definitely has not lived up to its potential.

Excellent post.   Shows how everyone is just angling for their favorite choice and will say anything to support it and also to diminish the others.

  14. you could save some money by buying either a nodak mutual insurance shirt, a nodak cab shirt, or a nodak electric cooperative hoodie, nodak outdoors hockey jersey, nodak records hat, or a nodak angler winter gloves?

You could buy a condom.  Or stop by the local high school.  Or if you wanted to be a bit more extravagant, drive over to JCPenney and buy some front butt mom jeans by Lee.   Riders!
