You or the recruiting services obviously never saw MarQueis throw a football. Don't get me wrong, he is a very good athlete, but if he was a great QB, he wouldn't be playing TE in the NFL. By the way, wasn't it MarQuieis that lost his starting job to a true FR?

If you think Brewster was/is a good recruiter, you are obviously WAY out of touch with reality. Being a recruiter for Texas or Florida is a job that very few could fail at since the largest volume of D-1 players come from those 2 states. As far as being a head coach, he had absolutely no clue what he was doing! Not only did he lose to NDSU and USD, but got embarrassed by nearly every team he faced. Mason left him a reasonable group that had been to bowl games and he proceeded to wreck that so badly it will take 4-5 years to rebuild the program. Oh, by the way, bringing in recruits that can't stay eligible does not make you a good recruiter, it makes you a idiot. Do you honestly think a kid that can't get better than a 10 on his ACT is going to study a playbook or comprehend schemes and then execute? Also, "ratings" of recruiting classes are very skewed from reality. Coaches are trying to bring in players that fit into the teams offense or defense, they aren't really too worried about someones "star rating".
-
I would like to know how Brewster fits into this? He recruited very few quality players that made any impact and many that shouldn't have been playing in the Big 10. His practices looked like chaos, players didn't listen and it showed on the field. I felt bad for the players that Mason had recruited, to have to deal with possibly the worst Head Coach EVER.

Isn't that a given? I am sure a blind driver would crash a race car too. I understand that people like to play devils advocate, but the fact is that you can't win without talent. The "best" coaches in college athletics are also great recruiters. They have the ability to bring in solid talent across the board, but also have the knack for pulling those 1 or 2 special athletes away from someone else. They don't have a magic play or formation that nobody else knows, because most coaches at this level are extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of the game. But then there are a few coaches that have so much passion for the game, their school, team and "the dream", that they can sell it, assemble it and build it.

Recruits come 1st. The best coaches in the world couldn't teach someone to run a 4.3 40, to have a 35 inch vertical jump. Long term successful programs are built by bringing in the best talent possible (that fit your scheme) and developing those players over their 4-5 years in the program. If you honestly think Nick Saben and his entire staff could come to UND and win a national championship with the current players, you are seriously mistaken. Great coaches only look great because of the talent around them (players and asst. coaches). I am sure many will want to argue this with me.

NDSU has 22 kids from North Dakota and 5 from South Dakota UND has 13 kids from North Dakota and 1 from South Dakota
-
No it is not obviously UND. As I said before, when I asked he would not tell me which school and at the time I didn't feel that I should pry any further.
-
You are all assuming that the coach was "slighted" vs completely being arrogant and rude to the coach and athletes. In the situation I was talking about it went far beyond "slighted". They were lied to multiple times and rescheduled meetings with coach, recruits and parents twice with very little notice. When they did finally meet the recruiting coach basically talked trash about every school in the state and told them nearly nothing about his school. It left a really bad taste in everyone's mouth and both kids chose to go elsewhere. The hs coach decided he didn't want to put anymore players and families in that situation until a different staff was at that school.
-
How about college coaches act like the care and treat people with some respect, so that they aren't burning bridges.
-
Yes and both kids played in the MVFC (different schools).
-
Neither player was hurt, they both went on to play for other schools. You do need to understand how he and the players were treated before making a judgement. He told me the story and I was shocked that a college coach would act in that manner. Either way, a college should never walk away leaving a sour taste since they will likely be back.
-
Successful coaches understand that relationships are important. HS coaches need to have good relationships with lower level youth, college coaches need good relationships with HS coaches NFL coaches need to have good relationships with management and they all need to understand how to have solid working relationships with players. If Muss or any other coach doesn't understand how to make a good impression on HS coaches and players, make them feel important and cultivate that relationship, they are in serious trouble. A HS coach I am friends with told me that he no longer returns phone calls or emails from two colleges because of the way they have treated him and players (he wouldn't tell me if UND was one of them).

I find it extremely hard to believe that there aren't a couple of kids from both ND and SD we shouldn't be chasing, not to mention MN should have a fair number of kids that would fit our system. I understand that NDSU has the upper hand right now, but if you want to build a program, you need to secure the talent in your area first, then spread out to fill in the holes that you couldn't get locally. This staff is going about it backwards.

I am not satisfied at all with the large number of recruits from Illinois or Wisconsin. Wisconsin and Minnesota are nearly the same population but yet we offered twice as many kids from Wisconsin. There are tons of UND alumni in Minnesota and lots of support but we have chose to recruit Wi and Ill. instead?
-
If you don't want to do the math, we offered a total of 8 kids from ND, MN and zero from SD. I guess it is no wonder that NDSU is winning the battle over local/regional talent. By state we have offers to kids from: South Dakota - 0 North Dakota -1 Minnesota - 7 Iowa - 3 Arizona - 3 California - 4 Texas - 5 Illinois - 22 Wisconsin - 15 Can someone explain why we only have 14 total offers to kids from ND,SD,MN and IA but 15 to WI? From what I can tell, our coaching staff enjoys traveling or whomever is in charge of recruiting ND, SD, MN and IA are unable to recognize talent.
-
If you think UND is fighting for local talent, think again. Go look at the 60 offers that have been made and then count the number of kids from nd, sd and mn. You will then understand how pathetic our coaching staff is at recruiting its own backyard.
-
You can divert attention by ripping other schools if you like, but the fact remains that our coaching staff has been unable to recruit the talent we need to be competitive in our conference or any other. We either need to move down to D2 or get the right people in place to be a contender.
-
Not sure what you are getting at?
-
My point is that we are missing great players in our area. Apparently NDSU beat us badly in that category and if it got better over the past two years how bad was it before? From what I have heard, we don't have many good relationships with hs coaches in the tri-state area.
-
If you have older players that you are fed up with, there are ways to either get them inline or get rid of them. If Muss and his staff do not know how, they shouldn't be coaching at this level. Players that are just doing what they have to do to get by (to keep their scholarship) need to be dealt with accordingly and bring guys in that are committed to getting the program to the next level.
-
I was just looking at our roster and noticed how few ND,SD and MN kids we had. Then I went and looked at NDSU's roster to see if it was comparable... no such luck. UND- 35 players from ND,SD,MN NDSU - 63 players from ND,SD,MN I could understand there being a 5 or 10 player difference, but 28? It seems as though our coaches might be missing talent in the tri-state area. I completely understand trying to get the best players possible, but shouldn't you be looking in your backyard before running all over the country?

Most schools have at least a few verbals this time of year. Since we have made 60 offers and have yet to receive a verbal, that tells me that we are not on the top of anyone's list.
-
People, these are "polls", it doesn't necessarily mean that those teams are really better. Don't take polls that seriously.......geez!
-
Ok, but "middle upper" is as far as I can go. Regardless, we are currently "bottom tier" and sliding quickly downhill.
